Note: This Blu-ray Disc (BD) is not compatible with standard DVD players Choreographer: Frederick Ashton Darcey Bussell and Roberto Bolle star in Frederick Ashton’s Sylvia, restored to the splendour of its elegant and opulent three-act form for the 75th anniversary celebrations of The Royal Ballet. Taken from Greek mythology, it tells the story of Sylvia, loved by Aminta, abducted by Orion and eventually rescued by Eros. Ashton was inspired by the music of Delibes to create such great choreographic sequences as the famous Act 3 pas de deux and the mischievous role of Eros, one of the delightful, darkly comic characterisations for which Ashton became known and loved. Sylvia is a wonderful showcase for virtuosity, invention and classical beauty, the epitome of Ashton style in stage settings of great detail and painterly perfection. Bonus material: Illustrated synopsis. Cast gallery. Introductions and conclusion to the ballet by Darcey Bussell. Picture: 1080i High Definition / 16:9 Sound: 2.0 & 5.1 PCM Video codec: AVC/MPEG-4 Disc size: 1 x BD50 Subtitles (extra features): FR/DE/ES/IT Menu language: EN Running time: 117 mins “This DVD… shows the Royal Ballet at the top of its…form. …makes an imperious huntress and a commanding Bacchante” BBC Music Magazine, January 2008 **** “[Darcey Bussell] dances with perfect precision in the pizzicato divertissement and is ravishingly radiant in the pas de deux powerfully partnered by Roberto Bolle who also displays some soaring elevation as the shepherd Aminta. Mara Galeazzi has developed into an accomplished performer and shines as Diana with Martin Harvey providing a superb and mischievous Eros. It is gorgeous - do not miss it” The Stage | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Live Recording from The Opéra National De Paris, 2005
Choreography, Stage Direction & Lighting Design by John Neumeier Set & Costume Design by Yannis Kokkos The longstanding and enormously successful director of the Hamburg Ballet, John Neumeier, created his famous adaptation of Sylvia at the invitation of the Paris Ballet. Arthaus presents a recording of this choreography from the Opéra de Paris with a line-up of soloist that includes some of the world’s best dancers, indeed stars on the international dance scene. Sylvia has a long history connected to the Opéra de Paris and has transcended the metamorphoses of dance throughout the twentieth century to be revived again and again right up to John Neumeier’s refreshingly contemporary version. As a choreographer infused as much with the culture of the repertoire as with a spirit of creativity, he seemed preordained to offer a new version of this “classic”. Supported by the cautiously simple but very effective stage and costume design by the Greek painter Yannis Kokkos, emphasising the dancing rather than dominating it, John Neumeier has created a ballet that is as timeless as the mythological fable it portrays and at the same time very close to audiences today. BONUS: Interviews with the artists Sound Format: PCM Stereo, DD 5.0, DTS 5.0 Picture Format: 16:9 DVD Format: DVD 9, NTSC Subtitle Languages: GB, DE, F, ES, IT (Bonus) Running Time: 136 mins FSK: 0 “Chiller than Frederick Ashton's classic, this is a visually exhilarating essay in Paris Opera Ballet style.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2011 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

“Of Delibes's two full-length ballets, Coppélia is the more obviously popular, the one with the bigger tunes and the greater number of recordings. However, Sylvia is also a superbly crafted score, full of haunting melodies. Andrew Mogrelia's Naxos series is one to be collected and treasured: there's loving care applied to selection of tempos, shaping of phrases, orchestral balance and refinement of instrumental detail. Here you thrill to Sylvia's Act 1 Fanfare, marvel at the control of tempo and refinement of instrumental detail in the 'Valse lente' and 'Entrée du sorcier', and revel in the sheer ebullience of Sylvia's return in Act 2. The inclusion of the ballet music from Saint-Saëns's Henry VIII was an admirably enterprising move, even though it doesn't amount to anything major apart from the 'Danse de la gitane', being essentially a collection of mock 'Olde Britishe' dances. All the same, a quite remarkable bargain.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Delibes: Complete Ballets
Until the momentous year of 1870, the only ballet music to have stood the test of time outside the theatre came from the world of opera. The success of Coppélia at its first Paris Opera performance on 25 May that year, at least as a specimen of what Tchaikovsky was later to define as ‘the pretty, le joli in music’, may have been at odds with both the atmosphere of France’s impending war with Prussia and with the original E.T.A. Hoffmann story on which archivist Charles Nuitter’s scenario was so loosely based, but it deftly exploited the rage for all things mechanical that was sweeping through Paris at the time: the city was home to a veritable industry of manufacturers and vendors of automata: Coppélia is, of course, a doll brought to life for male delectation. By the time Sylvia was premiered six years later, Delibes’ eye for a narrative and ear for a tune and for translucent orchestration had made him a sensation: the premiere was attended by the great and the good of Europe’s world of ballet, travelling from as far afield as St Petersburg to witness a more modest tale, based on a mythological scenario, but brought to life with no less charm and wit. The conductors in charge of these recordings had the world of Delibes at their fingertips; masters of light orchestral textures and lightning reflexes. They are classics of the catalogue, and their return will be welcomed by the balletomane audience but also those connoisseurs of the great Eastern European conducting tradition. “Doráti’s Coppélia [is] a revelation. Never before has a top conductor taken such care over music of this calibre or made it sparkle so freshly… Doráti’s tempi are sometimes faster than those favoured by ballet companies, but
there are unlikely to be any dancers in your sitting room, and he does make Delibes sound a much better composer than usual. There is an excitement about these discs, an air of occasion, that makes them something rather
special.” Gramophone Magazine, November 1975 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
