Idil Biret (piano)

“Idil Biret’s new Liszt album prompts a reappraisal of her extraordinary talent… In her Liszt Sonata… you will hear playing of a formidable power and assurance… There is no mistaking her lightning refl exes in the second of the Paganini Etudes and her vivo in the imitation sautillé bowing of No. 4 would make even Heifetz envious. Biret’s brilliant, iron-clad Steinway is well recorded and… in her Liszt, there is stunning profi ciency and a forbidding manner very much her own.” Gramophone, 2011

“Biret sweeps through the set [of Etudes] with unfaltering assurance and in No. 9, the prototype for 'La ricordanza'...she is as affectionate as she is dextrous. Elsewhere there are suspicions of a 'play the notes and the rest will look after itself' philosophy...Biret rides [Il Lamento's] storms with an thunder-and-lightening virtuosity.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011

Liszt Complete Music for Solo Piano 38: Les Préludes

Liszt Complete Music for Solo Piano 38: Les Préludes

Liszt:

Les Préludes, symphonic poem No. 3, S97

(first recording)

Three Concert Studies, S144/R5: Un lamento; La leggierezza; Un sospiro

Two Concert Studies, S145/R6: Gnomenreigen; Waldesrauschen

Zwei Episoden aus Lenaus Faust (piano solo), S513a/S514

Ab Irato, S143

Six of Liszt's important contributions to the literature of the pianoforte étude occupy the centre of this programme. They are flanked by two works unfamiliar in their present guise: the solo piano versions of Les Préludes and Der nächtlige Zug (the first of the Episodes from Lenau's Faust).

The Faust legend preoccupied Liszt for much of his life, Goethe's rendering of it inspiring the orchestral masterpiece, the Faust Symphony. Among the works inspired by Lenau's poem we find the Episodes here presented. Der nächtlige Zug is clearly one of his finest works and its neglect in all of its guises is inexplicable; the second of the episodes is an early version of the phenomenally successful First Mephisto Waltz.

“As his two previous Nimbus discs (3/95 and 7/95 – the latter including a fine performance of Liszt's Dante Sonata) show, Mark Anderson is a most musicianly pianist. His communicative ardour understandably made him an audience favourite at the 1993 Leeds Piano Competition and here, in this richly diverse programme, he again proves himself a born orator, declaiming Liszt's fantasy and nobility in generous-hearted fashion. At the same time all these performances (with the exception of the curiously elliptical and prophetic Vier kleine Klavierstücke which are played with a rapt concentration and intensity) have an off-the-cuff flavour with the spirit often engulfing the letter of the score” Gramophone Magazine
