| | | Elgar - Orchestral Works
Paul Goodwin brings fresh insight and a spirit of renewal to this lyrical program of Elgar rarities, in which the composer recaptures happy memories of his youth. “Not even Sir John Barbirolli or the much underrated William Boughton quite captures the same sense of strings merely breathing on their instruments in the way Goodwin memorably achieves here. …while the
strings of the ECO capture to glowing perfection the barely restrained emotions of the sublime Elegy. An outstanding programme.” International Record Review, March 2001 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

David Owen Norris (piano), The Works: Amanda Pitt (soprano), Mark Wilde (tenor) & Peter Savidge (baritone) A tribute to Elgar's 150th birthday (2007), David Owen Norris and The Works perform Elgar's songs and piano solos on Elgar's own 1844 Broadwood piano, including the world-premiere of his unpublished final song XTC, set to his own words. In all, this 2-CD set presents 32 of Elgar's finest songs for voice and piano, including a number never recorded before, and premiere recordings of Elgar's piano arrangements of the theme of the Cello Concerto, and the Prelude and Angel’s Farewell from Gerontius which, like Sea Pictures (sung here in its original soprano key) and the Woodland Interlude from Caractacus, were all composed at this piano. He even wrote these titles on its soundboard, along with his signature. These piano versions clearly remained in the forefront of Elgar’s mind and reveal his bold first thoughts before they may have been revised at the suggestion of others. The piano’s construction – keys slightly narrower than on a modern piano, the black keys set lower – illuminates Elgar’s intentions. The writing suddenly makes perfect sense, which it doesn’t always on a modern Steinway. The cover art is H.A. Payne’s The Enchanted Sea, which was part of the inspiration for Sea Pictures. “A veritable treasure-trove.” BBC Radio 3 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Elgar: A Self-Portrait
'The Orchestra's playing and the Hallé Choir's singing blazed with conviction and Jane Irwin was in rich voice as the mezzo soloist.' (The Sunday Telegraph, reviewing the live performance) “Elder, an inspired Elgarian who has a special relationship with this music” The Independent “…Elder maintains a tension and sense of belief that The Music Makers very seldom receives. Beautifully balanced and superbly paced, this deeply sympathetic and intensely-felt reading is perhaps the most convincing I have ever heard. The couplings, especially an unusually cogent and exciting Froissart, are a delight to hear.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2005 ***** “The centrepiece is The Music Makers, here given a performance that is above all refined, with the full-ranging recording bringing out the subtlety of Elgar's orchestration.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2005 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Elgar: Cello Concerto and other works
Sir Charles Mackerras's warm and voluble Elgar recordings bring one of the most stirring Enigmas on record, a reflective yet resolute Cello Concerto and a disc of pieces of music inspired by childhood. A very young Bryn Terfel is a highlight on the Starlight Express songs. “We can safely add [Robert Cohen's] name to a familiar rollcall, Du Pre (EMI) and Isserlis (Virgin) probably topmost. We can certainly add Mackerras's to a select group of pre-eminent Enigmas: it is really special ...Elgar's immaculately judged textures are sifted with scrupulous care and illumination ... The brass couldn't be riper, and the organ wells up nicely in this impressively full and immediate Decca recording. No question, a star-turn among current Enigmas” Gramophone Magazine | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Elgar: Piano Music
A welcome return to the catalogue of Maria Garzón’s recording of Elgar’s piano music, including Elgar’s own arrangement of his Enigma Variations. She was the first pianist to record the work, originally released on the ASV label. “It is the achingly nostalgic Dream Children No. 1 and winsome Serenade (1932) that show this young Spanish pianist at her best.” Gramophone Magazine | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |

| | | Elgar - Piano Music
“…the principal focus of this disc is the composer's solo piano arrangement of the Enigma Variations, and unlikely as it might seem the music sound surprisingly effective in this form. …Wass characterises all the variations sharply… and brings out all the available keyboard colour on which Elgar must have been relying.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2006 **** “…"Nimrod" is beautifully paced, as is the final "EDU" variation depicting the composer himself… Most obviously pianistic are the fast, brilliant variations, which come across splendidly… the salon pieces… make a charming sequence, particularly as Wass in his flexible use of rubato always sounds idiomatic and persuasive.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards 2006 | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
