BBC Philharmonic, Yan Pascal Tortelier

“ Masques et bergamasques, which takes its title from Verlaine's sad, mysterious poem Clair delune, is a late stage work that the composer himself described as melancholy and nostalgic, but it's hardly romantic, being instead pointedly neo-classical in character and shape. The playing here under Yan Pascal Tortelier is very satisfying, as are the elegant flute solos of the exquisitely delicate Pavane, performed here without the optional chorus, and in Dolly. The rarely heard Overture to the opera Pénélope is also effectively presented here.
The biggest concertante work here, the Ballade of 1881, is Fauré's orchestration of his piano piece of the same name; it's gentle music that persuades and cajoles in a very Gallic way.
Though not an overtly virtuoso utterance, it makes its own exacting technical demands on the soloist, among them being complete control of touch and pedalling. The highly regarded Fauréan Kathryn Stott meets these with consistent success.
There's little rhetoric and no bombast in Fauré's art, but how civilised he was, and what sympathetic interpreters serve him here! The recording is warm yet also delicate.”

Eric Le Sage, Alexandre Tharaud, Emmanuel Pahud, Pierre Colombet, Raphael Merlin & Francois Salque

For the fourth and penultimate volume of his Fauré series, Eric Le Sage has been joined by Alexandre Tharaud, Emmanuel Pahud, and François Salque, long-standing accomplices, in order to record these pieces for four hands. Recipient of numerous prizes both in France and abroad, this complete Fauré series is already asserting itself as a reference for the interpretation of Gabriel Fauré’s chamber music with piano.

“the presence of Emmanuel Pahud is luxury casting, somehow making the most familiar sound fresh...the highlight of the disc is surely the late Piano Trio. In its grave Andantino the two string players are superbly reactive...The anguished finale is potently conveyed, too; the impact of Faure's extraordinarily angular writing strengthened by the sheer ardour of the playing.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2014

“The somewhat blunt title of this disc belies the beguiling qualities of the music it embraces. This is Fauré the charmer, the weaver of enchanting spells, the delicate craftsman of impeccable miniatures as represented in his piano pieces for four hands and other jewels of chamber music.” The Telegraph, 23rd January 2014

Fantasy on Der Freischütz

Mathieu Dufour (flute) & Kuang-Hao Huang (piano)

Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal flutist, Mathieu Dufour, conceived this smartly programmed disc of late 19th/early 20th-century flute fantasies from his native France. He performs with the highly regarded Chicago-based pianist Kuang-Hao Huang.

Fantaisie combines CD rarities, such as Phillippe Gaubert’s Fantaisie and Albert Franz Doppler’s Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise, with flute enthusiast-favorites including Gabriel Fauré’s Fantaisie, Op. 79, and Francois Borne’s Fantaisie Brillante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen.

The CD combines virtuosic pieces written for the annual, competitive Concours examination at the Paris Conservatory — the fantasies by Fauré, Gaubert, and Georges Hüe — and works that elaborate on opera themes and folk tunes: the fantasies by Doppler and Borne plus Paul Taffanel’s Fantaisie on Themes From Weber’s Der Freischütz, one of the greatest opera fantasies for any instrument.

Mathieu Dufour, principal flute of the Chicago Symphony since 1999, is “one of the world’s most admired — and coveted — flutists” (Chicago Sun-Times). He was appointed CSO principal at age 25, making him one of the youngest players ever to hold such a position. Before that, he was principal flutist of the Paris National Opera and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.

Henri Demarquette (cello), Jérôme Ducros (flute), Juliette Hurel (flute) & Jean-Marc Philips-Varjabédian (violin)

Orchestre de Bretagne, Moshe Atzmon

Ballad, Berceuse, Elegie, Fantaises, Romance, all titles which define themselves as Gabriel Fauré’s poetic and captivating imagination. This first complete recording of the concertante works, composed between 1878 and 1919 will surely became another landmark for the Timpani label.

“…the performance here of the surviving movement of the Concerto, with Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian an eloquent and accomplished soloist, proves that the orchestration fits the music extremely well. Pianist Jérôme Ducros captures the Ballade's idiosyncratic blend of languor and virtuosity... he is a strong advocate for the Fantaisie, one of the host of underplayed works from Fauré's old age.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 *****

“…all these works are finely performed and recorded, making this an indispensable acquisition for all lovers of a still gravely misunderstood composer.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2009

Kathryn Thomas (flute) & Richard Shaw (piano)

“Great British Hope,” Kathryn Thomas presents a beautiful collection of flute music by Gabriel Faure and his contemporaries.

With the support of the composers Franck, Massenet, Fauré, Duparc and Saint-Saëns, the Société Nationale de Musique was set up in February 1871 to promote its distinctive symphonic and chamber music concerts. This disc presents a selection of music that featured in these concerts, many of which were premiered by France’s leading flautist at the time, Paul Taffanel. Thanks to Taffanel, a tradition of commissioning works especially for these concours began to emerge. At first the commissions were just for the flute competition but very soon, under Taffanel’s influence, new works began to be commissioned for all the wind and brass instruments.

“Kathryn Thomas plays with impeccable technique and tuning, neat phrasing, and an attractive tone. Richard Shaw is a sympathetic accompanist, and Lawrence Power's eloquent viola in the Duruflé is a real bonus.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 ****

“For her debut album, the gifted flautist Kathryn Thomas offers pieces reflective of the late-19th century "Ars Gallica" movement in French music, a rich period for flute composition largely because of the abilities of the virtuoso Paul Taffanel.” The Independent, 13th March 2009 ***

Jeffrey Khaner (flute), Hugh Sung (piano)

Jeffrey Khaner has established himself as one of the world’s foremost flautists, thanks to the widespread critical acclaim for his first two solo CDs on Avie, American Flute Music (AV 0004) and British Flute Music (AV 0016). He continues to enlighten and illuminate with his latest Avie disc, French Flute Music, combining flute favourites by Debussy, Fauré and Poulenc, with lesser-known but equally delightful works by Pierre-Max Dubois, Phillip Gaubert, Alexandre Tansman and Pierre Sancan.

With French Flute Music, Jeffrey continues to introduce neglected but deserving music to a wider public. His British Flute Music rightly earned Classic fM Magazine’s “Discovery of the Month” citation. This collection perfectly portrays his “first-rate flute playing” (BBC Music Magazine) and “exceptional virtuosity” (The New York Times).
