| | | Monteverdi - Vespers
A dazzling array of soloists join King - his choir and orchestra on top form - in presenting this new recording of a true masterpiece to the world: a project made possible by the generosity of all the many hundreds of people who donated to Hyperion’s appeal for recording funds in 2005. “More than any other version, this one sounds like its director has set out to enjoy himself and forget the musicological baggage. Gleefully choral and revelling in presenting the Vespers as a work of splendour, it benefits from some strong solo singing (notably from Charles Daniels and James Gilchrist)” Gramophone Magazine, June 2010 “Despite four wonderful volumes of Monteverdi's sacred music from The King's Consort, nothing will prepare you for the ecstatic consequences of taking seriously at least one aspect of Monteverdi's so-called seconda pratica – using much freer counterpoint, with an increasing hierarchy of voices: that the word is mistress of the music. And what ecstasy! Never mind the majestic opening psalm: just listen to the eloquent gestures in the 'Dixit Dominus', which range from the declamatory to the reticent with astonishing flexibility. Or the freedom and delicacy of tenor James Gilchrist in the 'Nigra sum', equally matched by the fragile spaciousness of Caroline Sampson's and Rebecca Outram's 'Pulchra es'. Spaciousness soon loses its fragility in the propulsive 'Nisi Dominus' and the 'Lauda Jerusalem' with its luxuriant finale. And although the 'Sonata sopra Sancta Maria' is still preferable with a solo soprano line, its instrumental variations are here dispatched with such fluency it's hard not to be won over; the 'Ave maris stella' is similarly eloquent. The second disc includes equally superb performances of the alternative six-voice Magnificat and the Missa In illo tempore. The cumulative effect here is of a dazzling chiaroscuro that Monteverdi surely would have recognised. With its use of full choir, King's recording has room to manoeuvre – which gives the imagination more room to take flight.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “The majesty and the ecstasy - King's forces are glorious in Monteverdi… Never mind the majestic opening psalm: just listen to the eloquent gestures in the 'Dixit Dominus', which range from the declamatory to the reticent with astonishing flexibility. Or the freedom and delicacy of tenor James Gilchrist in the 'Nigra sum', equally matched by the fragile spaciousness of Caroline Sampson's and Rebecca Outram's 'Pulchra es'.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2006 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Monteverdi: Missa In Illo Tempore
Odhecaton, Paolo Da Col (direction) Of all Monteverdi’s works, the Missa in illo tempore marks the most important link between the composer and the Franco-Flemish polyphonic tradition. It is here presented alongside motets by Giaches de Wert, maestro di cappella at the Mantuan court at the time when the young Monteverdi was engaged there as a violinist. Also included here are world premiere recordings of three recently-discovered Marian motets by Monteverdi that were recorded in the splendid acoustic of the Basilica di Santa Barbara in Mantua. “Odhecaton is an all-male choir with countertenor on the top line...These are consistently eloquent performances; the sound has an appealingly direct roughness...These are fine performances in a rich tonal palette, from a group worth following.” International Record Review, June 2012 “The choir give strong, well shaped performances and are quite naturally placed within the Santa Barbara acoustic. It has to be admitted that one of the counter-tenors does have a rather prominent voice, but given the disc’s other charms this is something that I can live with.” MusicWeb International, July 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. Widely regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of Bach's music today, Masaaki Suzuki has made his name both as the artistic director of the Bach Collegium Japan and as a performer on the harpsichord and the organ. Much interest has been focussed on the BCJ/Suzuki series of Bach Cantatas, begun in 1995 and reaching its final stretch with the recent release of Volume 46 (of a projected 55 discs). Hailed by the international music press, this monumental undertaking has acquired a world-wide following. From the very beginning of the collaboration with BIS, however, there have been numerous recording projects beyond the sacred cantatas of Johannes Sebastian, and, indeed, beyond Bach himself. Some of these acclaimed recordings can now be found in a limited edition boxed set, released in connection with the 20th anniversary of Bach Collegium Japan this year. Apart from Bach himself, the composers represented in the set are illustrious forerunners such as Monteverdi and the German quartet of Schütz, Buxtehude, Ahle and Kuhnau, Bach's contemporaries Vivaldi, Handel and Zelenka, and finally his own son, Carl Philipp Emmanuel. Works included are from a wide range of genres, including vocal music as well as instrumental, secular as well as sacred, scores involving large forces as well as solo works. The members of the Bach Collegium Japan are joined in their music-making by a number of distinguished soloists, and there is also an opportunity to sample the harpsichord-playing of Masaaki Suzuki in his acclaimed recording of the Goldberg Variations. The eminently price-worthy set consists of eleven previously released titles, accompanied by the original booklets and full information. It also includes 'A Choral Year with J.S. Bach', a newly made compilation of Masaaki Suzuki's personal selection from famous movements in Bach's cantatas, ordered according to the Lutheran Church Calendar from Advent to Reformation Day. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
