| | | Bach - Cantatas Nos. 208 & 212
"Harnoncourt tops off the complete Teldec set of Bach's church cantatas with admirably ebullient accounts of [these two] secular cantatas…the exuberance of the performance carries over into Harnoncourt's accompaniments - no scholarly rectitude here - and the recording is first rate." | | | J S Bach - Coffee Cantata, Peasant Cantata & Amore Traditore
Selected from the award-winning cycle of recordings of the complete cantatas of J. S. Bach the secular pieces featured on this album represent works composed at very different stages in his career and also performed in different venues. The Italian chamber cantata “Amore traditore” BWV 203 was written when he served as capellmeister to the prince of Anhalt-Köthen from 1717 to 1723, whereas the other two works originated in Bach’s Leipzig period. The so-called ‘coffee cantata’ BWV 211 belongs to the repertoire Bach wrote for his Collegium Musicum, when Bach organised concerts that took place weekly at the Zimmermann Coffee House and outdoor Coffee Garden. The so-called ‘peasant cantata’ BWV 212 is the last secular cantata known to have been composed by Bach. Dating from 1742, it was commissioned for a celebratory occasion at a country estate outside of the city of Leipzig. The idea behind the work is a serenade offered by the peasant folks greeting their master, the new occupant of the mansion. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

“These two most delightful of Bach's secular cantatas here receive sparkling performances fully alive to the humour and invention of the music. The Coffee Cantata illustrates a family altercation over a current enthusiasm, the drinking of coffee. A narrator tells the story while the soprano and bass soloists confront each other in a series of delightful arias. Thomas brings out the crabby dyspeptic side of Schlendrian's character imaginatively and Kirkby makes a charming minx-like Lieschen. Covey-Crump's sweet light tenor acts as a good foil. The Peasant Cantata also takes the form of a dialogue, here between a somewhat dull and simple young man and his sweetheart Mieke, a girl who intends to better herself. Through the 24 short movements Bach conjures up a wonderfully rustic picture with some vivid dance numbers and rumbustious ritornellos. The soloists' nicely rounded characterisations emerge with great humour and Hogwood directs with vitality and sprightly rhythmic control. The recording is excellent.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |
