The Art of Magdalena Kožená is an anthology of her finest performances, documenting both the range of her voice and the breadth of repertoire to which she can bring authority, from early baroque of Monteverdi and Strozzi to sacred arias by Bach, opera arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart, Gounod, Bizet and Auber, as well as orchestral songs by Mahler. To all she brings an absorbing emotional depth and maturity of her interpretative abilities. Unique to Kožená are the songs rooted in Bohemia and Moravia by Dvořak and Janáček. She still feels closely connected to her Czech roots. “It’s music that stays in your body forever”. This is Magdalena’s own selection of her favourite songs and arias, sung in French, Italian and German as well as in her mother tongue. 28-page Booklet, including new liner notes from Nick Kimberley. |

| | | Bach - Secular Cantatas II
Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki present their long-awaited second volume of secular cantatas by J.S. Bach. The “Hunt Cantata”, composed in 1713, is the oldest of his secular cantatas. The libretto includes a dramatic plot in which four divinities from ancient mythology appear. Die Zeit, die Tag und Jahre macht was intended for the 1719 New Year celebrations in Köthen. The cantata is set as a dialogue between Time (tenor) and Divine Providence (alto), who in the final movement are joined by a chorus wishing ‘glückseligen Zeiten’ (‘joyous times’) “Sophie Junker is a personable Diana to tenor Makoto Sakurada's youthfully lyrical Endymion. Best of all if baritone Roderick Williams's Pan who renders the outrageous toadying distinctly palatable. Suzuki shapes everything with his trademark light touch, if he's sometimes inclined to under-characterise the drama.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 **** “brilliantly caught, from the casting of the four characters to the expectional continuo work, led by Suzuki himself. Makoto Sakurada (as Endymion) conveys the ensnaring potential of love with friendly caution, while Pan (the ever-communicative Roderick Williams) delivers the first feel-good excursion in celebrating our Prince as Pan of his country.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Bach - Cantatas Nos. 208 & 212
"Harnoncourt tops off the complete Teldec set of Bach's church cantatas with admirably ebullient accounts of [these two] secular cantatas…the exuberance of the performance carries over into Harnoncourt's accompaniments - no scholarly rectitude here - and the recording is first rate." | | | Piano Music of Dinu Lipatti
Award-winning pianist Luiza Borac champions the compositions of fellow-Romanian Dinu Lipatti in a 2-CD set that includes a number of world-premiere recordings. Pianist Luiza Borac is the most dedicated champion of music from her native Romania. She was recognised with a BBC Music Magazine Award for her artistry and advocacy of the piano canon of Georges Enescu. She now turns to another compatriot best known as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century who was also during his short lifetime a celebrated composer: Dinu Lipatti. With influences that range from the counterpoint of Bach to the lyricism of Chopin and the folk-tinged soundscapes of Enescu (Lipatti's godfather), as well as his teachers Paul Dukas and Nadia Boulanger, Lipatti forged an individual voice over the 18 years of his compositional career. The rarities that Luiza has unearthed for this 2-disc set include a number of world premiere recordings including Lipatti's first Piano Sonata, an arrangement of Albeniz's Navarra, and the complex Fantasie. For the Concertino in Classical Style, Lipatti's first published composition, Luiza is joined by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields conducted by Jaime Martin. Aiming to recreate Lipatti's sound world as faithfully as possible, Luiza performs on a Bechstein piano, Lipatti's instrument of choice. “Borac breezes with the same breezy confidence as Lipatti” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 “While reasonably rich in passionately youthful outings this programme is worth every penny of its asking price, not only for its fine recording qualities and Luiza Borac’s superb playing, but for undiscovered gems – in particular the amazing Fantaisie, as well as the fascinating Concertino.” MusicWeb International, January 2013 “Borac plays with technical assurance and the utmost sensitivity. The London recording of the Concertino is a litle lacking in intimacy; the Berlin solo recordings have a church acoustic that blurs the textures, but more often enhances the beauty of Lipatti's writing and Borac's playing.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | J.S. Bach: 6 Sonaten für Orgel für 2 Klavieren zu 4 Handen
Claudine Orloff & Burkard Spinnler (2 pianos) Transcribers and arrangers have had a field day during the great rediscovery of J.S. Bach.… But the transcriptions of the organ works, meant to get the works out of the temple and bring them to the stage, played a particularly important part. The Trio-Sonatas, for a long time considered unplayable in concert, caught the attention of important personalities of the piano, from Ferdinand Thieriot, friend of Brahms, to ‘Mr Bach’, Hermann Keller, in 20th century Germany. Rediscovered by Arthur Schanz, scientific adviser for this production and undisputed specialist regarding Bach’s transcriptions, these sonatas in their version for two pianos, performed here by a duo of partners on stage as in life, provide sheer pleasure to the ear and mind. They also contribute to a never-ending task, dear to Fuga Libera: the reflexion on the genius of Bach. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Istvan Gati (bass), Ingrid Kertesi (soprano), Jozsef Mukk (tenor), Judit Nemeth (alto), Julia Paszthy (soprano) Budapest Failoni Chamber Orchestra, Matyas Antal “Naxos include here four of Bach's most celebrated and accessible cantatas. The performances are far removed in character from the complete Harnoncourt and Leonhardt edition on Teldec; women rather than boys sing all the soprano and alto solos, the Hungarian Radio Chorus is a mixed male and female ensemble and the Failoni Chamber Orchestra of Budapest plays modern rather than period instruments. However, for much of the time this is enjoyable spirited music-making which, in its choice of tempos, its understanding of recitative and its feeling for the lyricism of Bach's writing compares favourably with rival modern instrument versions. The disappointment lies partly in the choice of edition and solution to instrumentation. Sheep may safely graze (No 208) is without the treble recorders which Bach specifically asked for and which intensify the pastoral idyll. Here, furthermore the flutes are rather distantly balanced giving them a somewhat irrelevant role which is far from Bach's intention. More serious is the decision to follow the inflated version of the first and fifth movements of Ein feste Burg (No 80) penned by Bach's eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann shortly after his father's death. Here Friedemann added three trumpets and a kettledrum to the original texture of oboes and strings, and though some may prefer the more overt sense of occasion and the emphasis of the church militant, that this achieves, the scoring of the original is unquestionably effective and in keeping with the piece as a whole. Much else here is sensitively and unsentimentally performed. 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' (from No 147) is perhaps a shade on the slow side. Most affecting of all though, is the canonic alto/tenor duet from No 80 whose tender writing for oboe da caccia and violin has long been for some one of the purplest of all passages in the entire Bach cantata canon. The soprano Ingrid Kertesi negotiates the many difficulties of Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen! fluently and with a youthful zeal and few will be disappointed by her spirited artistry. These are two mainly very enjoyable discs which can be confidently recommended. Clear recorded sound.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Two mainly very enjoyable discs which can be confidently recommended.” Gramophone Magazine | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
