In view of the fact that several of the works are composed for double choir, the usual 16-member choir from the cantata recordings have been slightly expanded to 18 singers, of which some also appear as soloists. Included on the disc are the six motets BWV 225-231, as well as BWV 118 O Jesu Christ, mein’s Lebens Licht and BWV Anh. 159 Ich lasse dich nicht. “The performance is, as you'd now expect from [Suzuki's] Collegium, excellent. Voices range from delicate soloists to a splendidly light and transparent 18-strong chorus. Instrumental support is discreet but colourful...The recording makes its distinctive mark among many competitors.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2010 ***** “The performances are splendid. After its solemn beginning, 'Komm, Jesu, komm' is light, almost flirtatious in places...In 'Jesu, meine Freude', Suzuki finds a perfect balance between drama and lyricism, and 'Singet dem Herrn' is full of rhythmic vitality. Recommended with all possibile enthusiasm.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010 “This is one of [Harnoncourt's] best CDs and, beautifully recorded, it is still worth exploring...The familiar motets are memorable too, the opening Singet dem Herrn particularly fresh, and Jesu, meine Freude strikingly beautiful.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | JS Bach: Motets, BWV225-230
Almost all Bach’s motets – including Ich lasse dich nicht – were occasional compositions for funeral ceremonies, although we only really know the occasion for which one of the motets was written: Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf. In the case of the other motets we can only conjecture the occasions for which Bach composed them; indeed we cannot even date most of them since, apart from Der Geist hilft, only Bach’s original manuscript for Singet dem Herrn has survived. Frieder Bernius founded the Stuttgart Chamber Choir whilst still a student and with this group, has forged a refined sound which is both internationally recognized and influential, particularly in the area of romantic choral music. His previous recordings for CARUS have received wonderful reviews from the critics, including Gramophone Editor’s Choices, BBC Music Magazine Choral Choice of the Month and a Disc of the Week on BBC Radio 3’s CD Review. | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. “Bach's technical wizardry is most apparent in the combination of chorale and fugue in Fürchte dich nicht. Dijkstra presents this with clarity and works up to a strong affirmative ending.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

“Bo Holten has an ideal solution presented in SACD surround-sound, leaving only a narrow space between double choirs… it works to perfection in the heart-rending 'Good night' of the soul leaving this earthly world ('Jesu, meine Freude'), soloists weaving dreamily around the more distant alto choir.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2009 ***** “The Flemish choir's… interpretation of the text and shaping of phrases is emotionally telling. Holten's well pointed articulation of polyphonic music… and the diction of his singers is immaculate.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2009 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days.
