Mendelssohn: Elijah: Denn er hat seinem Engeln (Double Quartet)

For their second release on Ondine, the acclaimed Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under chief conductor Daniel Reuss perform Psalm settings by Felix Mendelssohn and Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek.

The first release on Ondine from the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone and awarded ‘Disc of the Year’ by German weekly DIE ZEIT.

Cyrillus Kreek, a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory and a collector of folk songs, laid the foundation for Estonian professional music.

This unique coupling highlights the familiarities in vocal and harmonic setting between Mendelssohn and Kreek.

The psalm is one of the oldest forms of sacred song in Western culture and temple liturgy is one of the most important sources of later hymns of the Roman church. Various ways of singing the psalms are represented on this CD, which includes works by Rossi, Sulzer, Mendelssohn, Lewandowski, Sweelinck, Schönberg, Gokkes and Avni. The Netherlands Chamber Choir has been a topclass chamber choir for decades and many of their CDs have received international awards.

This CD celebrates the 60th anniversary of the ever-youthful Saxon Wind Philharmonic. Under their new Principal Conductor Thomas Clamor, they perform works such as Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and Verdi’s Triumphal March form Aida with buoyant energy.

The artists in this second part of the successful lullaby collection include Juliane Banse, Christian Gerhaher and Andreas Scholl. Volume 1 (CARUS83001) was featured on BBC Radio 3 CD Review in March and has sold thousands of copies in Germany. Canon, folk song, art song and settings for choir by various composers offer insight into the diversity of the repertoire of the lullaby and evening song.

A collection of everyone’s favourite sacred choral music, including Mozart’s Ave verum corpus, Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine and Franck’s Panis angelicus.
