The long overdue third instalment in our survey of Schubert’s four-hand piano music brings one of the greatest works in the piano duet literature: the Fantasie in F minor, D940. Written in the year of Schubert’s death, the Fantasie runs the entire gamut of emotional expression within its seamless four-movement structure: stormy double dotted outbursts are pitted against delicate dances, a wistful recurring theme against a capricious scherzo. It is generally regarded as one of the finest piano duet works ever written.
