| | A Master Class with Christa Ludwig, Part I Bonus Directed by Claus Viller | Schubert: | Winterreise D911 Directed by Enrique Sánchez Lansch |
Christa Ludwig is acknowledged as one of the twentieth century’s most explorative and complete vocal artists. Her professional singing career spanned five decades and, as a star of the international operatic stage, she made roles as diverse as Rosina, Dorabella, Cherubino, Leonore, Amneris, Eboli, Kundry, Ortrud, Clytemnestra and the Marschallin her own, excelling in soprano, mezzo and coloratura mezzo repertoire. She also established her reputation as a fine lieder singer. The intimate auditorium of the magnificent neo-baroque Volkstheater in Vienna was packed with a discerning and enthusiastic audience when Christa Ludwig gave a master class there. The young singers who took part – Valerij Serkin (tenor), Stella Grigorian (mezzo) and Marcus Pelz (baritone) – were all studying at an advanced level, with their sights set on finding success as professionals on the operatic stage. Christa Ludwig focused the time she spent with each singer on helping them to fi nd the dramatic truth expressed in the aria of their choice and advising on how they could communicate this in their interpretation. With her guidance, their characterisations are seen to take on a new depth in just a short space of time. The master class focuses on Mozart and concludes with a performance extract featuring the young Christa Ludwig as Dorabella in Così fan tutte (1970). | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Schubert: Winterreise & Die schöne MüllerinRecorded at the Siemensvilla, Berlin, 1979 & Recorded live at the Montforthaus, Feldkirch, Schubertiade 1991
Franz Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise was written late in his life. It is regarded both as a highlight of the genre and as the touchstone by which lieder singers are judged. To succeed in interpreting Winterreise is the artistic equivalent of a patent of nobility for a singer. The song cycle certainly became one of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s calling cards and it is probably this work that made the baritone an international household name. In this recording made for the Sender Freies Berlin in January 1979, we see two of the leading musicians of their day in the prime of their lives and at the very peak of their art and experience appearing together in the service of Schubert’s Winterreise. Both the experienced Schubert lieder singer and the Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel, known throughout the world for his authoritative interpretations of Schubert’s piano music – had performed Winterreise together frequently between 1975 and 1989. In 1991, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau finally agreed to perform Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin at the Feldkirch Schubertiade - he had not sung the song-cycle in public for twenty years. The great baritone belonged to the innermost circle of artists who give this unique, Austrian festival of chamber music its distinctive character. He had performed Schubert there on many occasions, but never Die Schöne Müllerin. The pianist András Schiff was another long-standing member of the inner circle, but this was the artists’ first collaboration in Feldkirch – and so Austrian Television (ORF) recorded the concert. | | | Hermann Prey: The Schubert Song Cycles
'In his best interpretations, Prey presented Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin with a natural, organic flow of voice that stands in high contrast to the more intellectual approach of his rival Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.' “As we know from his fine CD version, Thomas Quasthoff is a master of this cycle, his command of word and music consistently true and compelling. His interpretation here is once more imbued with sincere empathy with the suffering traveller, suggesting, as he says in the accompanying interview, a man at once at the end of his tether and yet defiant. He is also keen to show that each song could not exist without its being part of the whole, just one aspect of Schubert's genius. The cohesion of his reading is supported with deep acumen by Barenboim's thoughtfully felicitous playing. Some 30 years ago he recorded the cycle with Fischer-Dieskau, and again he manages to underpin his singer's intentions while managing to add his own mite of individuality. So why do the results rather underwhelm? The direction is too restless and in close-up Quasthoff constantly rocks from side to side; the effect becomes dizzying. For a DVD version Bostridge offers rich rewards, but for those allergic to any visual dimension outside the music as such, this DVD has much to offer purely in musical terms.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “…an exceptionally fine performance of Schubert's great song cycle… Filmed with great tact and concentration, we only see, apart from a few distance shots, Barenboim weighing in with his accompaniment and Thomas Quasthoff close up, with his expressive features. Bold, seemingly spontaneous yet deeply pondered, this is one of the great performances of this masterwork that I have ever witnessed. There is also half an hour of illuminating interviews with the artists, and rehearsal sequences.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2006 ***** “As we know from his fine CD version, Thomas Quasthoff is a master of this cycle, he command of word and music consistently true and compelling. The cohesion of his reading is supported with deep acumen by Barenboim's thoughtfully felicitous playing.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2006 BBC Music Magazine

These are historic 60s & 70s BBC films, long locked away in the BBC archive. When released on DVD in 2008 and 2009, this was their very first availability to the consumer. They have been carefully restored by the BBC Restoration Unit, so are in the best possible visual and audio condition. They include several key and unique performances of Peter Pears, which were not filmed anywhere else (notably as Grimes, and also as Captain Vere in Billy Budd). The Owen Wingrave was the original version of this 'written for TV' opera, and so definitive in respecting the composer's wishes. The legendary black-and-white film of Billy Budd was long thought to be lost, until Decca unearthed an error in the BBC Tape Library entry. The Billy Budd was one of the three Gramophone DVD nominations in 2009. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
