El sombrero de tres picos

La vida breve: Interlude & Dance

Ritual Fire Dance (from El amor brujo)

Mari Kodama (piano), Sophie Harmsen (mezzo-soprano)

Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, Kazuki Yamada

Manuel de Falla’s richly evocative music erupts in a riot of colour in this vibrant new recording from Kazuki Yamada with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Works included are the ever popular Noches en los jardines de España and El sombrero de tres picos as well as movements from La vida breve and El amor brujo.

The sultry warm atmosphere of an Andalusian night is almost palpable in Falla’s spellbinding Noches en los jardines de España. With its shimmering, sensuous harmonies, exquisite orchestral colours and exuberant melodies and rhythms, it’s perhaps Falla’s most impressionistic work. Using a large orchestral canvas on which he paints with deft, luminous strokes, Falla skilfully integrates a virtuoso piano part to create lovingly evocative music, full of captivating beauty.

Elsewhere with the sensational ballet El sombrero de tres picos, Falla conjures up music steeped in Andalusian culture which is boisterous, full-bloodied, and urgent. It’s impossible not to be swept along by the drama in this orchestral showpiece. By turns lyrical, sensuous, or dramatic, the meticulously written score is full of surprises and the work positively bristles with wit, energy and exuberant intensity.

Yamada’s previous recordings with the OSR for PENTATONE have been widely praised – “Exquisite and passionate … grace abounds” (BBC Music Magazine), “tastefully refined” (Gramophone). For their more recent release of music by Roussel, Debussy and Poulenc, HRAudio.net noted Yamada’s “exuberant performance” and the OSR “playing …[with] tremendous vitality and enthusiasm, as if their very lives depended on it.”

The pianist Mari Kodama has established an international reputation for profound musicality and articulate virtuosity and has recorded extensively for PENTATONE. Her most recent release with her sister Momo Kodama, a sizzling account of Tchaikovsky ballets, was praised by The Guardian for its “sparkle and style” and described by Artamag as “…a very exciting recording, a ‘labour of love’ by two extraordinary pianists.”

Frequently in demand as an interpreter of Mozart’s works, the mezzo soprano Sophie Harmsen is a regular performer in large international festivals.

The first album to be recorded on the spectacular new organ of the Paris Philharmonie, transcriptions of popular showpieces by Bach, Khachaturian, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner, Saint-Saëns, Rimsky-Korsakov, Fauré, Debussy and Falla, demonstrating both the ‘symphonic’ capacities of the organ and the phenomenal artistry of leading organist Olivier Latry.

“Latry’s characteristic integrity and virtuosic verve illuminate everything he touches – particularly in the lascivious glissando that ends his own arrangement of Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance…when a master organist and instrument collide, what’s not to love?” BBC Music Magazine, April 2017 *****

Although she disliked being typecast as a Spanish music specialist, there’s no doubt that Alicia de Larrocha’s way with this music is in a class by itself. No matter what the repertoire for a recital she gave, regardless of whether it included Spanish music, she was often called upon by her audiences to provide at least one Spanish encore. Over her performing lifetime she built up many of these and in 1974 made a recording of thirteen of them entitled ‘Spanish Piano Music’ (SXL 6734: tracks 1–13 on this reissue). This LP forms the core of this reissue and is filled out with other encore-worthy Spanish titles. While Albéniz (with six pieces) and Granados (with four) form the core of the reissue, there’s also zesty Spanish Baroque music by Mateo Albéniz (no relation of Isaac) and Antonio Soler, two dances from Falla ballet music despatched with disarming ease by Larrocha in their keyboard versions, and miniatures by Halffter, Nin-Culmell and Montsalvatge.

“de Larrocha at her finest: this LP-and-a-half's worth of Albeniz, Granados, Falla, Soler and other captures this music's idiomatic heart, with ebullient rhythms, soulful melodies and exquisite tonal warmth.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2014 *****

“Each track is excellently recorded, and Miss de Larrocha does everything possible for these little pieces, from the piquant sub-Scarlatti of Matéo Albéniz and Soler to the items by Isaac Albéniz and Granados ... This music is mainly an evocation of dance and song, and the vividness and clarity, light and warmth are everywhere apparent” Gramophone Magazine

Euskal Barrokensemble

Following the album 'Euskal Antiqua', this new release by Enrike Solinis in the series Alia Vox Diversa offers new insight on the Spanish traditional music through a masterpiece by Manuel de Falla: The Enchanted Love (El Amor Brujo). In this ballet, Spanish tradition and classical music are intimately linked and Solinis’ new approach - on baroque instruments - makes the essence of De Falla’s music perfectly audible.

In addition to De Falla’s work, the Euskal Barrokensemble performs other pieces inspired by fertile encounters between popular and classical music. This sheds new light on well known masterpieces like the famous 'Concerto de Aranjuez' by Rodrigo or Scarlatti's Sonatas.

“Curious, quirky, but performed so well as to compel attention.” The Observer, 28th May 2017

“a rich, resonant recording” Record Review, 28th May 2017

“There's no doubting the enthusiasm of the performers or the frequent brilliance of the playing. The sound, dominated by guitars, sackbut and an almost guttural low flute can in itself be attractive, above all in Cantemir's Bestengiar, new to me and utterly beguiling. Solinís himself is a real virtuoso, and Pérez deliver the vocals with a sexy, arthy tone and trememdnous flamboyance.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2017
