Brandenburg Choir & Brandenburg Orchestra, Paul Dyer

The Australian Brandeburg Orchestra get together each year to celebrate Christmas and Artistic Director Paul Dyer has committed some of the music created to disc.

It contains the usual eclectic mix of repertoire, performed by these first class musicians in their unique way.

Their previous release was universally critically acclaimed and we expect this one to generate similar reviews.

“this seasonal offering reveals the quirky programming policy of artistic director Paul Dyer...I’m not sure anyone else has ever dared programme Angelus ad virginem and Billy Joel together, but the man who hymned his Uptown Girl shares stage space with Herbert Howells and Henry Purcell as well, and doesn’t seem unduly to suffer.” MusicWeb International, November 2012

Kammerkoret NOVA, Anne Karin Sundal-Ask

The NOVA Chamber Choir celebrated their 10th anniversary last year and this disc is a celebration of Christmas music both from Norway and England. ‘To Whom we Sing’ is a special collection of traditional music which has been given a new tonal language through collaboration with competent young composers. The Norwegian numbers have been arranged by the English-born composer, Andrew Smith, a resident of Norway, and the English pieces by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, presently living in the USA. A truly poignant disc, sensitvely performed by these talented musicians.

Theatre of Voices, Ars Nova Copenhagen, Paul Hillier

Inspired by the much-loved service of ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ given every Christmas Eve, this recording presents the Nativity story told through plainchant, motets, 17th Century dialogues and traditional folk carols.

Paul Hillier leads Theatre of Voice and Ars Nova Copenhagen in music he has culled and arranged from Italian, German, Danish, English and American sources.

Their previous disc of music inspired by texts: Stories – Berio & Friends received rave reviews.

“The 65 minutes are designed to be played at a single sitting: the musically curious – and those of genuine religious impulse – will find much that is deeply satisfying.” Mail on Sunday, 27th November 2011

“Tracing a course from Advent through the Nativity and on to Epiphany and Holy Innocents, Paul Hillier has devised a fascinating programme of plainchant, Renaissance music and other apt pieces that poignantly relate the Christmas narrative. Excellent performances bring the sequence vividly to life.” The Telegraph, 9th December 2011

“This lovely disc offers a Danish take on the traditional English carol service...This needs to be listened to in sequence, in one go, and following the texts leads to a pretty profound, immersive experience. Paul Hillier’s arrangements of traditional carols are unfailingly sensitive; the highlights being a radiant version of the Italian Dormi, dormi o bel Bambino and an account of Liebe Hirten” The Arts Desk, 10th December 2011

“As collections of Christmas music go, this one stands out, not only for the impeccably refined and expressive singing, but for the immense breadth of the material it contains...The highlight, for me, is Ars Nova’s beautifully shaped reading of Byrd’s O magnum mysterium.” Sunday Times, 18th December 2011

“Only one work from Carols for Choirs has made it into Paul Hillier's strikingly original Christmas sequence. Pungent arrangements of "Personent Hodie" and "Es ist ein Ros Entsprungen" jostle for space with ancient plainchant...Ars Nova's ripe choral sound outclasses the thready blend of Theatre of Voices.” The Independent on Sunday, 11th December 2011 ****

Unto Us a Boy is Born!

Vaughan Williams:

Wither's rocking hymn

Volume I of Traditional Christmas Carols broke iTunes’ record for the most downloads of a classical album and remains one of The Sixteen’s most popular discs. This brand new recording contains more festive delights.

There is such an abundance of festive music available to us that sometimes one wishes Christmas did not come but once a year! The Sixteen’s first volume of traditional Christmas carols contains some of our most favourite pieces but there is so much more wonderful festive music that deserves to be better known. So we decided to make a second volume. On this disc you will discover familiar seasonal favourites such as ‘Unto us a boy is born’ and ‘It came upon the midnight clear’ but we have also included some less well-know gems like ‘Cherry Tree Carol’ and ‘Gloucestershire Wassail’.

“If you really want to listen to carols at home or in the gym, you won’t go wrong with these pristine performances.” Financial Times, 4th December 2010 ***

“beautiful with a capital B.” The Times, 17th December 2010

“The Sixteen sounds as crisp and refreshing as a frosty morning...A wide and interesting choice of festive favourites, performed with precise, unsentimental warmth and a sense of occasion.” Classic FM Magazine, January 2011 ****

Bill Ives leads the famed Choir of Magdalen College Choir in this selection of choral favorites for Advent and Christmas. The music on this recording ranges from quiet reflection and anticipation to the excitement and celebration of the birth of Jesus and the coming of the Wise Men. Magdalen College is one of the oldest choral foundations in England, with an unbroken tradition stretching back to 1480.The Choir retains much the same shape as it had in the 15th-century, with 16 boy Choristers (educated at Magdalen College School) and 12 adult Academical Clerks (undergraduates of the College).

“Magdalen College's recital makes an attractive alternative to the annual broadcast from King's...Director Bill Ives has a good ear for contrasts” The Independent on Sunday, 20th December 2009
