Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, Graham Ross

Graham Ross directs the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge in music celebrating the feast of Epiphany, culminating in Arnold Bax’s unaccompanied double-choir masterpiece, 'Mater ora filium' (1926). The feast of Epiphany falls on 6 January, 12 days after Christmas. Marked in the Christian world with the story of the Magi, many composers have been inspired by the account of ‘the three kings’ following the star, bringing their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. This sequence of music explores some of the greatest musical contributions to the feast, principally from the 16th and 20th centuries. Three great Epiphany hymns frame this sequence, all in new arrangements by Graham Ross, and all here receiving their première recordings. Graham Ross has also written the excellent booklet note and is aided and abetted, again, by John Rutter as producer, engineer and editor.

“While the richness of Bax’s quasi-orchestral writing is relished to the full the performance always moves forward with a sense of purpose. The choir sings with complete assurance and the sopranos are especially valiant – the top C at the climax on ‘Lord of right’ is hit truly and sustained thrillingly. This is a superb performance…with rewarding and varied music, marvellously performed, this disc is a sure-fire winner.” MusicWeb International, 7th December 2016

“An effective post-Christmas sequence of music for Epiphany … One of my favourite offerings from amateur church and collegiate choirs this season.” Record Review, 24th December 2016

“This wide-ranging selection from Graham Ross and the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, is their most imaginative so far. There is homely Cornelius, baleful Judith Weir, and to end some hair-raising singing from soaring sopranos and resonant young basses in Bax’s ecstatic Mater ora filium for double choir.” Financial Times, 29th December 2016 ****

“every bit as successful as its predecessors … Judith Weir’s Illuminare, Jerusalem…is given a superb rendering, as is Bax’s Mater ora filium … An exceptionally satisfying CD.” Choir & Organ, January 2017 *****

Brandenburg Choir & Brandenburg Orchestra, Paul Dyer

The Australian Brandeburg Orchestra get together each year to celebrate Christmas and Artistic Director Paul Dyer has committed some of the music created to disc.

It contains the usual eclectic mix of repertoire, performed by these first class musicians in their unique way.

Their previous release was universally critically acclaimed and we expect this one to generate similar reviews.

“this seasonal offering reveals the quirky programming policy of artistic director Paul Dyer...I’m not sure anyone else has ever dared programme Angelus ad virginem and Billy Joel together, but the man who hymned his Uptown Girl shares stage space with Herbert Howells and Henry Purcell as well, and doesn’t seem unduly to suffer.” MusicWeb International, November 2012

City of London Choir & Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Hilary Davan Wetton

Performances of carols both ancient and modern have become central to the celebration of Christmas.

The choral music on this disc includes Holst’s surprisingly neglected Christmas Day, as well as music by Leighton, Joubert, Mathias, Gardner and Rutter.

The nostalgic mood of Howells’s evergreen carol anthems is echoed in Finzi’s In terra pax, which recalls the pealing of bells at midnight on a frosty Christmas Eve.

The City of London Choir, which enjoys an enviable reputation as a “leader among non-professional choruses” (The Times), makes its Naxos début with this delightful recording.

“The gem here is Finzi's In terra pax… From late in Finzi's life, it is suffused with English pastoral yearning, and baritone Roderick Williams sings beautifully in the outer sections.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2009 ****

“...an outstanding account of one of the minor masterpieces of 20th-century English music.” The Guardian, 4th December 2009 ****

Cantemus Chamber Choir, Huw Williams

Regent is delighted to announce the release of their first recording with Cantemus Chamber Choir, based in Cardiff, directed by Huw Williams.

This excellent choir is fast establishing a name for itself as one of the country’s finest choirs, with a wide-ranging repertoire stretching from the Renaissance to the present day. Widely acclaimed for its performances of Baroque music, Cantemus performed Handel’s Messiah at Buckingham Palace in December 2014, receiving a standing ovation. The choir’s growing reputation has led to it being featured on national television and radio, notably BBC 1’s primetime The One Show and BBC Radio 3’s In Tune.

A very varied selection of Christmas music, new and old, including traditional carols in new arrangements – several by conductor, Huw Williams receiving their first recording - popular American spirituals, favourite Christmas hymns, and contemporary settings from Eric Whitacre, Francis Grier, and John Tavener.

The Choir of York Minster, Robert Sharpe

Christmas is arguably no better experienced than in one of England’s great cathedrals, not least at York Minster. Music plays a key role here: the uplifting sound of the choir in joyous repertoire, the grandiose sound of the organ, and the wonderful acoustic all come together to celebrate this season.

In this programme, the choir of York Minster offers up a feast of mostly 20th century and contemporary English music, including the four major carols by Herbert Howells, Ralph VaughanWilliams’ extended Fantasia on Christmas carols, and Richard Shephard’s hilarious new arrangement of Jingle Bells. Of special interest are recent new carols from Matthew Martin, Stephen Jackson, Francis Pott, and Grayston Ives – the first two works commissioned by York Minster and receiving their first recording here.

The Choir of Lincoln Cathedral, Aric Prentice

There have been many recordings of Herbert Howells choral works but not a series of his complete anthems. Priory aims to achieve this with a collection to be sung by the Lincoln Cathedral Choir.

Herbert Howells is rooted in the English Cathedral tradition to which he has contributed so many services and anthems and his is a unique and instantly recognisable idiom rich in intricate and harmonically complex counterpoint; in long , interweaving and mellifluous vocal lines all contributing to a response to the texts that he set that can be both austere and sensual.
