| | | Piazzólla: L'Histoire du TangoWorks for flute and guitar
Cécile Daroux (flute) & Pablo Marquez (guitar) It was in December 1998 that Cécile Daroux recorded this disc, which has since become a benchmark both for flute aficionados and in the Piazzolla discography. Accompanied by Pablo Márquez and a 100% Argentinian supporting cast, the French flautist – who died sadly young in 2011 – provides an exemplary overview of the great Astor Piazzolla's output, in which the tango is omnipresent. A must! This title was released for the first time in 1999. “Daroux and Marquez are wonderful advocates for Piazzolla's sophisticated, simmering passions. Their range of tone and expression is beguiling.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2012 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Piazzólla: Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas
This CD by the Trio Artelli presents some of the most significant works by Astor Piazzolla, illustrating once again the inexhaustible creativity of this Argentinian maestro. Piazzolla’s creations come to be seen as open works, new Latin American standards, able to be appropriated by the various compass points of contemporary music, whether classical, jazz or indeed pop. These three Neapolitan musicians remain true to their chamber music vocation, producing versions of Piazzolla for violin, cello and piano which are extremely elegant, occasionally minimalist and distinctly modern without in any way detracting from the original. Their arrangements reflect the whole palette of colours and inspirations of the Argentinian composer, with particular attention to his never-failing melodic vein and mood of melancholy. The choice of pieces itself proclaims the intentions of the Trio Artelli, with a tribute to the 'Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas', the four seasons of Baires, Piazzolla’s own reworking of masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Martin Fröst: Dances to a Black Pipe
Martin Fröst’s latest releases have featured core repertoire for his instrument from the 18th and 19th centuries, and most recently a disc of his wide-ranging encores. All of these offerings have been singularly well received by reviewers and record buyers alike, and have contributed to Fröst’s flourishing concert career. On this disc, accompanied by the Australian Chamber Orchestra under Richard Tognetti, Fröst presents a wide-ranging selection of works all connected with dancing. The principal work on this disc is Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, and with special permission from the Copland Fund, the disc ends with the fireworks of the original and later revised, dazzling ending of the Concerto. Fröst also includes on this disc works by Lutoslawski, Anders Hillborg and Piazzolla, as well as an arrangement of Brahms’ Four Hungarian Dances arranged by his brother, Göran. “His virtuosity lies in his exceptional dexterity and agility…and in his daring control of the instrument’s dynamic and expressive extremes.” The Times “almost every piece is a novelty in Martin Fröst's dance-themed programme...This partnership of soloists and orchestra is an inspired one, not least in the smaller-scale pieces...There is a quirky and highly personal essay in lieu of booklet-note from Fröst himself.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012 “No point in pulling my punches: this is a wonderful disc. The playing is superb, and these dance-inspired pieces will put a skip in your own step...It's obvious that Frost and his Australian colleagues must have had enormous fun recording this programme and their enjoyment bubbles through at every turn. Frost's virtuosity is a delight in its own right, but it's deployed in the service of unquenchable good humour.” International Record Review, February 2012 “Performed in both the original and revised versions, Copland's hot, slick Clarinet Concerto bookends a programme that incorporates waltz, schmaltz, tango and klezmer. Not all of it works. Brahms's Hungarian Dances are downgraded to vehicle status as a showcase for Fröst's dexterity. But elsewhere (Piazzola, Hillborg, Högberg) soloist and orchestra sizzle.” The Independent on Sunday, 8th January 2012 **** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Gidon Kremer & Kremerata BalticaMozartwoche Salzburg 2002, Recorded live at the Mozarteum (Großer Saal)
Gidon Kremer (conductor & violin) & Marta Sudraba (cello) Kremerata Baltica Gidon Kremer is not only one of the leading violinists in the world, but also - thanks to his unquenchable curiosity and search for new impulses - one of the most fascinating musical personalities of our time. His repertoire ranges from Bach to the present, whereby a number of contemporary composers have achieved international recognition through his commitment. This DVD presents a very original programme with rarely performed pieces and Kremer's own version for string orchestra of the Schubert Quintet which makes it particularly attractive. Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra, was created in 1997 by renowned violinist Gidon Kremer, who serves as the orchestra's artistic director and solo violinist. The high artistic quality of the ensemble is the result of the exceptional talent of the individual musicians and Kremer's innovative approach to repertoire. Kremerata Baltica is composed exclusively of talented young musicians (average age 27) from the Baltic States and is supported by the Ministries of Culture of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, making the group the de facto cultural ambassadors of the region. Kremerata Baltica won a Grammy Award in 2002, was nominated for another in 2003, records for Nonesuch Records (a Warner Bros. label) and Deutsche Grammophon, and it performs in all the great halls of the world. "Gidon Kremer…the great Latvian violinist and the brilliant chamber orchestra he has drawn from his own and neighbouring republics…performed with flair, intensity, precision and delicacy." The Independent “A brilliantly played concert, although the Schubert Quintet arrangement is disconcerting. It's good to see the enjoyment on the players' faces in the quirky Russian works, as well as the Rózsa and Piazzolla.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2009 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
