Initially, there was great scepticism towards the thesis that Bach’s sacred vocal works were originally written for solo voices. With this edition of one cantata for each Sunday and the great feasts of the ecclesiastical year Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande want to strengthen this new approach and prove it right by their excellent performances. This Vol. 15 of the edition contains cantatas which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the last four Sundays before Advent: BWV 52 „ False world, I trust thee not!“, BWV 60 „O Eternity, thou thunderous word“, BWV 116 „Thou Prince of Peace, Lord Jesus Christ“, BWV 140 „Awaken ye, the watchman calls us“. “Here again Kuijken and La Petite Bande bring their most natural and distilled spaciousness to proceedings. If the opening movement of Wachet auf is a touch prosaic, even emaciated at times, the subsequent duet between the Soul and Christ is a heart-warming essay in gentle domestic rumination. The dialogue between instruments and solo voices is indeed where these performances come alive” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013 “He [Kuijken] strives for as near an authentic experience as is reasonably possible, and the results of his arguments are persuasive. The agility of his soloists in the ‘choral’ movements helps to explain Bach’s often mightily complex contrapuntal lines” International Record Review |

Recording locations: Recorded live: Lund, Leipzig, Thomaskirche, Leipzig October 2000. Gardiner’s award-winning Bach Cantata series on Soli Deo Gloria continues with volume 9 in the series featuring Cantatas for the seventeenth and eighteenth Sunday after Trinity. Recorded live in October 2000. We join John Eliot Gardiner, The Monteverdi Choir and The English Baroque Soloists on their Bach Cantata pilgrimage in the spectacular dark brown gothic Allhelgonakyrkan (All Saints Church) in Lund. The concert explodes into action as the long fanfare-like ritornello for solo trumpet and strings herald the opening of BWV 148 Bringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens (Give the Lord the Glory due his Name). This grand opening leads the way for the chorus to enter with a rousing delivery of the psalm verse, ‘Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.’ This is then followed by the chorale cantata BWV 114 Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost (Ah, dear Christians, be brave), from Bach’s second Leipzig cycle. We then hear BWV 47 Wer sich selbst erhöhet, der soll erniedriget werden (Whoever himself exalteth shall be abashed) which opens with a mighty opening movement for chorus. The programme ends with the most instrumentally conceived of Bach’s double-choir motets, BWV 226 Der Geist hilft unser Schwacheit auf, (The Spirit Helpeth Our Infirmities). It is also the only motet composed by Bach for which a specific purpose is known – the funeral service of JH Ernesti, the rector of the Thomasschule in Leipzig. We then travel to the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and open the programme with BWV 96 Herr Christ, der ein’ge Gottessohn (Lord Christ, the only Son of God). Next comes BWV 169 Gott soll allein mein Herze haben (God alone shall have my heart), the last and considered by many to be the most consistently beautiful of Bach’s Cantatas for solo alto. This is then followed by the superb choral cantata BWV 116 Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ, first performed on 26 November 1724. The choir then retreat to the very crucible where for the last twenty-seven years of his life Bach worked. They form a horseshow around his final resting place and sing a cappella what legend has identified as Bach’s very last piece, BWV 668 Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit, the so-called Deathbed Chorale. “…the opening chorus of BWV 148… It's just the kind of piece at which the Monterverdi Choir surpasses its rivals, and the instrumental support from the English Baroque Soloists is splendid. John Eliot Gardiner brings his accustomed fervour to the music, enlivening it at every turn. Altogether, this is one of the strongest releases in Gardiner's series so far.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2009 ***** “…BWV148… includes the aria "Wo wird in diesem Jammertale", a model of the extended soul-searching tableau in which, here, the singer and obbligato flute are co-subsumed within a vale of sorrow. It is beguilingly delivered by tenor Mark Padmore and flautist Rachel Beckett, the highlight of the Swedish programme... an electrifying account of the Sinfonia of BWV169... heralds Bach's least celebrated but, arguably, most refined and mature alto cantata. Nathalie Stutzmann sails through each portion with her inimitable diction and plush allure.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2009 | | | (also available to download from $21.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Bach - Cantatas Volume 28
“consistently outstanding performances, musical beyond belief, and worthy of any collection” (MusicWeb) “The latest volume contains few disappointments. Tempos are well-judged, the 12-voice choir effective and the instrumental playing well nigh impeccable.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2005 “This volume takes its name from Bach's second and least-established setting based on the great Advent hymn Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (No 62), composed in 1724 to inaugurate the new church year in Leipzig. If not quite boasting the magisterial imagery of his earlier effort from Weimar, the spirit of Luther's celebrated purloining of 'Veni redemptor gentium' lives on, especially in a brilliant opening concerto-style Vocal JS Bach 72 chorus whose unambiguous thematic character perfectly inhabits the hopes of the new season. Masaaki Suzuki delivers a less visceral performance than some but derives a most effective contrast between the ecstatic fragrance of the first aria and the 'militant, tumultuous continuo theme of the second,' as Dürr puts it. The latter, 'Streite, siege', is sung with considerable gusto by Peter Kooij but it is the contemplative elements to which Suzuki is most naturally drawn. The opening of Wohl dem, dersich auf seinen Gott (No 139) is a case in point, where the affectionate oboi d'amore provide a tender backdrop to a particularly reassuring treatment of Bach's most elegant of harmonic strategies. The return of Robin Blaze to the series brings a similarly involved and reflective musicianship to the anguished strains in 'Ach, unaussprechlich ist die Not' in No 116. Elsewhere there is an urgent account of the graphic and succinct Ach wie flüchtig (No 26) in which Bach alights gleefully on the triviality and materialism of man's life; images of time and opportunity flash past us with striking immediacy here. This was a popular cantata in the preperiod era but few recordings maintain the focus of the conceit as effectively as Suzuki. Less telling is the opening chorus of No 116 (Du Friedefürst) which, for all its tidy articulation and refined shaping, contains little of the rich repository of nuances, large and small, which Nikolaus Harnoncourt so effortlessly instills. For all the many beauties bestowed on us from Bach Collegium Japan over the past 27 volumes, that ageing series soberingly reminds us of a kind of musical assumption which oxygenated the best cantata performances then – qualities somehow less easily uncovered these days. The Super Audio option, used in the series for the first time, offers an even more luminous presenc” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
