Richard Strauss: Tone Poems, Vol. 1

Richard Strauss: Tone Poems, Vol. 1

Strauss, R:

Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40

Tod und Verklärung, Op. 24

South West German Radio Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, Francois-Xavier Roth

This CD marks the beginning of a new recording cycle of the complete symphonic poems of Richard Strauss as performed by the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg and their principal conductor, François-Xavier Roth.

Future volumes will be released during the coming years, at the rate of two CDs per year. Already in his first release with hänssler CLASSIC of Mahler's 1st Symphony, the French conductor has made it clear that he has both the strength as well as the sensitivity to build delicate orchestral colors – exactly what is necessary with Richard Strauss’ works. And with his orchestra, Roth has one of the best ensembles in Germany.

“the combination of his muscly, forward-moving approach, with not an ounce of fat on it, and perhaps most stunning engineering accorded to the master orchestrator yet, mean that both the mock-epic composer hero of Ein Heldenleben and the dying man of Tod und Verklärung make their momentous journeys without sag or stress...these performances pulse with ideal life.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2013 ****

“What I particularly like about this performance is its musical honesty...Roth draws extremely fine playing from his orchestra” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2013

Tod und Verklärung, Op. 24

DVOŘÁK: Five Slavonic Dances

Renowned for the precision of his execution, it was said that Reiner could ‘stand before an orchestra he has never seen before and conduct a new piece at first sight without verbal explanation, by means of manual technique alone’ (he later taught at the Curtis Institute, where he unsuccessful attempted to moderate the young Leonard Bernstein). His temper was equally legendary (he was once described as ‘A despot with a baton’), but his performances, perhaps because of his uncannily tiny beat, were models of clarity and precision, never losing sight of the longer line, and always renowned for their glittering vitality.

The recordings here are the sum of his orchestral recordings made for the Decca Record Company. His Strauss is searing, and the thrill of the Brahms and Dvorak Dances has perhaps never been equaled – helped immeasurably, of course, by Decca’s state-of-the-art recording.

“Inexplicably divided into two short discs (previously one long one), these are ideally stylish and warm-hearted performances. The Strauss tone poems are highly charismatic.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 ****

“These are brilliant performances with every member of this great orchestra on his toes, and the 1961 recording wears remarkably well” Gramophone Magazine (Brahms, Dvorak)

“I was bowled over by the splendour of the performances and gratified by the warmth and clarity of the recording … There is splendid ambience and range, a good stereo spread, clean definition and body. Both performances are immediately gripping: they are obviously of great distinction and I would go even further and say that they are inspired. Reiner was a Strauss conductor of quite exceptional insight and sympathy : his Tod und Verklärung seems to me the finest in the catalogue without exception and Till Eulenspiegel is certainly the equal of the finest both in terms of characterisation, orchestral playing and recording.” Gramophone Magazine (Strauss)

“Reiner made many classic recordings of Strauss's music, and I think one of the best is this dramatic, fiery performance of Tod und Verklärung with the Vienna Philharmonic. With biting brass and radiant strings, it's an exhilarating experience.” James Longstaffe, Presto Classical, April 2014

Waltz Sequence No. 1 (from Der Rosenkavalier)

This 2CD set brings together for the first time all of Lorin Maazel’s Decca recordings of Strauss tone poems with the Vienna Philharmonic (he recorded Tod und Verklärung twice, the second time with the New Philharmonia Orchestra). All the recordings were made in Vienna’s Sofiensaal, and star VPO principals were soloists in Don Quixote and Der Bürger als Edleman. To these 1960s recordings is added the 1983 recording of Macbeth that Maazel made for Deutsche Grammophon, thereby offering a trio of literary-inspired works: Don Quixote (Cervantes), Don Juan (Lenau) and Macbeth (Shakespeare). The release forms part of the continuing exploration of Maazel’s Decca discography.

“[Maazel secures from the] splendid symphony orchestra a considerable quantity of splendid sound” Gramophone Magazine (Don Juan, Tod und Verklärung)

“served up with great gusto … with the utmost in Viennese affetuoso rubato … The orchestral playing has a superb gloss and is full of subtle shadings, and the dynamic range is very wide indeed” Gramophone Magazine (Rosenkavalier Waltzes)

“Lorin Maazel gives a finely-paced account of Macbeth and draws sumptuous playing from the VPO … it goes without saying that the playing of the VPO is altogether glorious” Gramophone Magazine
