Chiaroscuro For Two Pianos Tuned A Quarter Tone Apart

Etude Fantasy

Ursula Oppens (piano)

This new CD of piano music by the widely celebrated American composer John Corigliano (b. 1938) includes the world premiere recording of Winging It (2008), an improvisation-based piece written for the eminent American pianist Ursula Oppens, who also gave the work its concert premiere. Ms. Oppens has been a champion of contemporary composers and new music throughout her career.

Corigliano’s Etude Fantasy (1976) takes the listener on an excursion through intriguing studies in left-hand scoring, contrapuntal clarity, ornamentation, and melody.

Corigliano wrote Fantasia on an Ostinato (1985), his “only experiment in ‘minimalist’ technique,” for the seventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition to challenge the contestants’ imagination and musicality.

Corigliano has composed only two works for two pianos, and both are heard on this new CD in performances by Ms. Oppens and her longtime collaborator Jerome Lowenthal. Corigliano’s youthful, high-spirited Kaleidoscope (1959) projects a changing mosaic of colorful patterns. In the boldly inventive Chiaroscuro (1997), the pianos are tuned a quarter-tone apart; their altered states produce other-worldly results.

Winner of an Academy Award, four Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize, Corigliano (b. 1938) has written more than one hundred scores. His music has been performed and recorded by many of the world’s most prominent orchestras, soloists, and chamber ensembles. According to the All Music Guide, Corigliano ranks among “the few ‘serious’ contemporary composers whose appeal has ranged beyond the new-music crowd to reach listeners steeped in more traditional, time-tested fare.”

Sonata for Violin and Piano

Red Violin ‘Chaconne’

Fantasia on an Ostinato

The Red Violin Caprices (for violin solo) (2002)

Ida Bieler (violin) & Nina Tichman (piano)

One of America’s finest and most widely recognized composers, John Corigliano has won several Grammy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize and dozens of other honours.

His hauntingly beautiful Chaconne and virtuosic The Red Violin Caprices, both based on his Academy Award winning film score for The Red Violin, attest to his maverick imagination, while a famous passage from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is the seed from which Fantasia on an Ostinato grew.

The Violin Sonata, one of Corigliano’s earliest works, combines sophistication and vigor.

A graduate of the Juilliard School New York and the Music Academie of Cologne, Ida Bieler received top honours and the Heimsuth Award. Four great instrumentalists guided her musical development: Ruggiero Ricci and Oscar Shumsky in USA ; Max Rostal and Nathan Milstein in Europe .

“Corigliano could have made a comfortable living churning out film scores: his versatility, orchestral wizardry and fluency are undeniable.” BBC Music Magazine

“…music that sounds pointedly ironic one moment, warmly open-hearted the next, where desolation alternates with uproarious humour, orgiastic violence with touching sentimentality. …the performances are highly accomplished and seem thoroughly absorbed throughout, and the recordings don't let them down - everything emerges with clarity and conviction.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2005

Ever since Beethoven wrote his last piano sonata and called it opus 111, the number 111 has enjoyed certain kudos in musical circles – of which we are proud to take advantage, as Deutsche Grammophon celebrates its 111th anniversary in 2009. 111 years is a lot of history, and we have tried to squeeze into an array of products – both on CD (also available on download) and on DVD – the “flavour” of the label, and to give an idea of its culture over 11 decades, The philosophy has always been “The greatest recordings by the greatest artists in the world” – something clearly borne by the releases now on offer, both in terms of sound quality and artistic merit.

This unique collection of 55 CDs forms DG’s major release in its 111th anniversary celebrations. The limited edition box set gathers together many landmark recordings – from the past to the present. Most of them appear complete, as originally programmed, in their original cover art – and several include additional material.

This is a great Library of Music, Artists and Recordings extending from Abbado to Zimerman, Monteverdi to Pärt, Furtwängler to Dudamel – there’s never been anything quite like it before! The opulent deluxe box with hinged lid opens up to reveal the neatly stacked contents of 51 “original jacket” albums and the 150-page booklet.
