Jonathan Ellse & Sidharth Parbhu-Naik (organ)

The Choir of Christ’s College, Cambridge, David Rowland (director)

A most usual collection of early twentieth century original English carols and carol arrangements by Peter Warlock, Gustav Holst, and Ralph Vaughan Williams, sung by the excellent mixed choir of Christ’s College, Cambridge, directed by David Rowland. This is the choir’s eighth recording on the Regent label.

The recording includes a selection of nine well-known carols by Warlock, a set of four lesser-known carol arrangements and the ever-popular ‘Lully my liking’ by Holst.

Of particular interest is the first recording of the choral version of Vaughan Williams’s 1919 set of Eight English Traditional Carols. Apart from ‘This is the truth sent from above’, this wonderful set of carols is virtually unknown to choirs today, and contains Vaughan Williams’s imaginative and colourful arrangements of tunes that have become known through the work of later arrangers, including ‘The Sussex Carol’ (On Christmas night), ‘Down in yon forest’, and ‘Wassail Song’.

Liverpool Cathedral Choir, Christopher McElroy

Historically, music has played an important part in the life of the Catholic Church, and since 1958 in the metropolitan cathedral, when a choir of men’s voices to sing in the Crypt was formed by Canon Edward Murphy. In 1960 a boys’ choir was established under the direction of Christopher Symons and amalgamated with the men’s choir. Since then music has been at the heart of the worship in the metropolitan cathedral.

This is a wonderful disc of traditional Christmas carols, recorded in the wonderful acoustic of Liverpool's Metroplitan Cathedral.

Philip Rushforth (organ)

Choir of Chester Cathedral

Here is a lovely collection of Christmas Carols from the ever-improving cathedral choir in Chester. A varied selection of old and new carols is interspersed with some short organ interludes.

“the most appealing of any cathedral recording I've heard this year. The boys' sound is very much brighter than that of many cathedral choirs - in fact the boys-only a cappella repertoire here is particularly accomplished...Rushforth paces the choir's performance with real tenderness and beauty.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012
