This CD features Finnish star soprano Soile Isokoski and her longstanding duo partner Marita Viitasalo, with a selection of Lieder by Richard Strauss. Included are such popular songs as Zueignung, Cäcilie, Morgen!, and Allerseelen. Along with the cycle of 3 Ophelia-Lieder and Strauss’s final complete composition, Malven, this collection spans 65 years of Strauss’ writing. The music of Richard Strauss has been a cornerstone of the singing career of Soile Isokoski: “His music just sits so well in my voice, in terms of both its range and its lyrical quality.” Soile Isokoskis’ earlier CD release of Strauss Orchestral Songs and Vier letzte Lieder (ODE9822) became a major commercial success and earned her a Gramophone Award. Soile Isokoski is hailed as one of the finest singers in the world (“Isokoski's lyric soprano is like liquid gold.” – David L. Kirk, Fanfare Magazine, March/April 2009) whose recordings have been praised as top-choice and garnered the highest distinctions at the BBC Music Magazine Awards, Gramophone Awards and MIDEM Classical Awards. “Isokoski begins with disarming lightness of touch...It's easy to forget that, at its core, this is a rich, almost heroic voice, modulating its way with seeming effortlessness through the bigger numbers at the heart of the recital...Isokoski's technique has stood the test of time...Viitasalo is clearly supportive...but more of an accompanist than an equal partner.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2012 **** “As always with Isokoski, one either finds a certain humanity in her less-than-rounded tones - or not. Such positive qualities burn from within during songs such as 'Zueignung' and 'Morgen!'...and especially in the lesser-known 'Befreit', a performance whose subtle empathy is a summation of what has always made Isokoski such an endearing figure on the operatic landscape.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012 “a feat of some of Strauss's greatest solo songs, all sung with high intelligence, in impeccable German, in beautiful sound (the piano especially sympathetic, well-rounded), with accompaniments from Marita Viitasalo impeccably groomed, seldom obtrusive let alone assertive, and perhaps all the better for that...Isokoski does not always seek to cultivate the voice beautiful...She is adept at picking up every nuance” International Record Review, May 2012 “The intense, silvered beauty of her tone — less peachy and voluptuous than Fleming’s — and the unmannered clarity of her diction are unique in this music today...The strange Ophelia set, rarely programmed, can never have been more sumptuously sung.” Sunday Times, 24th June 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Strauss: Don Juan, Metamorphosen & Songs for Soprano & Piano
Strauss, R: | Don Juan, Op. 20 Die Zeitlose, Op. 10 No. 7 Allerseelen, Op. 10 No. 8 Die Georgine Op. 10 No. 4 Die Verschwiegenen, Op. 10 No. 6 Begegnung (Meeting), AV 72 Rote Rosen, AV76 Die erwachte Rose, TrV 90, AV 66 Morgen, Op. 27 No. 4 Metamorphosen |
Joan Rodgers (soprano) & Jan Latham-Koenig (conductor/piano) Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra Jan Latham-Koenig was one of Avie’s flagship artists. As Music Director of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, he recorded the unique coupling of Franck’s Symphony in D with extracts from Psyché (AV0003), and Ibert’s rare, early opera Persée et Andromède (AV0008). These recordings of Strauss’s Don Juan and Metamorphosen were Latham-Koenig’s valedictory recordings in Strasbourg, and illuminate his brilliant ability to shape phrases and extract orchestral colour – ideal for Strauss’s vividly pictorial tone poems. An equally accomplished pianist, Latham-Koenig completes the album by accompanying one of England’s leading vocal lights, soprano Joan Rodgers, in a selection of Strauss’s early Lieder. “The account of Don Juan cannot be faulted: ideally paced, with a bold contribution from the horns and strings which are virile and rich. The tension in Metamorphosen, although not low, is a little inconsistent but reaches an impressively passionate climax with good, full-bodied recording. The conductor also provides highly sympathetic accompaniments for his soloist, Joan Rodgers.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2011 “Joan Rodgers's singing...has bags of personality and that's the main thing...Tone-poem and elegy both start well, but have their problematic interpretative moments...The central sweep, though, is clear and impressive, the Strasbourg strings remarkably fine.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2011 *** “Don Juan has been played and recorded so often that it might seem impossibile to conjure the music into sounding as fresh as the day it was written. Yet it happens here, with a conductor-and-orchestra team that delivers sweeping panache, needlepoint precision, and vividly characterised solo playing (superb horns!). In the brooding, autumnal Metamorphosen, the quality of the Strasbourg string-playing is if anything higher.” Classic FM Magazine, July 2011 ***** “This lusciously rewarding programme opens with an admirably ardent, appropriately cocksure but always musically disciplined Don Juan, played with panache by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg...[Metamorphosen] is beautifully played, finely shaped and exquisitely internally balanced.” Sunday Times, 11th September 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Richard Strauss: The Complete Songs 1
“Pianist and presiding spirit Roger Vignoles takes us on a select chronological jaunt, making sure Brewer boldly goes to the heart of the bigger numbers where lesser voices would fear to tread. Her glorious instrument, fine-tuned from top to bottom, effortlessly negotiates some of Strauss's more outlandish intervals.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2005 **** “There seems to be no challenge that Christine Brewer and Roger Vignoles can’t meet in these opulent songs. Brewer’s soaring voice offers a fabulous range of colour and dynamics, and Vignoles matches her with a truly orchestral palette at the keyboard” Classic FM Magazine “Christine Brewer … combines opulent, blazing tone, fearless top notes and surprising agility” Daily Telegraph “This is the first volume in Hyperion's Richard Strauss edition, something to be devoutly hoped for: he was a great Lieder composer but only a small fraction of his 200-plus songs are at all well known. Admittedly, his taste in poetry wasn't always as elevated as that of his fellow composers, yet his music can transform rather ordinary verses. And the major poets do get a look-in. This disc includes two Heine settings, one of which, 'Frühlingsfeier', came a year after Salome and echoes the operatic score. This is where Christine Brewer, whose repertory includes the title-roles in Ariadne auf Naxos and Die ägyptischeHelena, might be expected to be most comfortable: her big, gleaming soprano sweeps through impressively. If at first her voice seems less than ideally flexible as a Lieder instrument, especially in the earlier songs, it would be ungrateful not to marvel at what she does ultimately bring to these performances. Opening with 'Zueignung', which Strauss never intended to be relegated to encore status, Brewer sounds glorious if a little staid. But she quickly lightens up, catching the palpitations of 'Wie sollten wir geheim sie halten' and the gem-like intimacy of 'Leises Lied'. She positively blazes in the sunlight-evoking 'In der Campagna', where Vignoles's piano captures the splash of a Straussian orchestra. Both artists bring something fresh to the chestnuts 'Allerseelen' and 'Wiegenlied', in which Brewer floats a beautiful line over the rippling accompaniment. Having the high tessitura demanded in the rarely heard Gesänge des Orients, she clinches any remaining argument magnificently.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “At all times Brewer and Vignoles work together hand in glove … This is a properly equal partnership that bodes very well indeed for this admirable project. Brewer and Vignoles set high standards for anyone who
would record Strauss now and for future collaborations on Hyperion too!” International Record Review “Christine Brewer in magisterial voice … a major project, beautifully performed and presented” The Independent “Could there be a more enticing title stamped across a CD than Strauss: The Complete Songs – 1? Richard Strauss the man may be widely resistible; but it would take someone extraordinarily hard-hearted not to take any delight in his luxuriant imagination and succulent harmonies … each planned CD in the series will be shaped around the talents of different singers, and Brewer’s disc marks a tremendous start” The Times | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Acclaimed and cherished as one of Australia’s finest operatic artists, Nance Grant had a voice possessed with beauty and power, an ease of technique, a perfection of phrasing and taste that cemented her place in the hearts of Australian music lovers. This long overdue tribute presents one of the great sopranos from down under - in recordings previously thought lost. Nance Grant chose to stay close to her family in Australia rather than pursue an international career, even though Sir Edward Downes insisted he could ‘fill her books’ with performances in Britain and Europe. So this double album offers those who never had the opportunity to hear her, the gift of discovering a voice of magnitude and generosity, and for those who grew up hearing her on stage, the chance to reacquaint themselves with her artistry. The original tapes from radio broadcasts of the 1960s and ’70s have been carefully restored to give more than a hint of the majesty of Nance Grant in a characteristic range of repertoire. The recordings represent significant landmarks in the development of opera in Australia: the emerging Victorian State Opera’s enormously successful Idomeneo, re di Creta, and Maria Stuarda under the direction of Richard Divall; Australian Opera’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Fidelio and Tannhäuser with Sir Edward Downes; and one of the first of the Australian Opera/ABC collaborations presenting concert performances of Wagner operas, with Grant as Sieglinde in Die Walküre conducted by Leif Segerstam. The programme also pays homage to Nance’s considerable concert career, including a complete song recital - Greig, Richard Hageman and Richard Strauss - with pianist Geoffrey Parsons, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and an excerpt from Mendelssohn’s Elijah. |

Strauss, R: | Ständchen, Op. 17 No. 2 Herr Lenz Op. 37 No. 5 Ich liebe dich Op. 37 No. 2 Freundliche Vision, Op. 48 No. 1 Vier Lieder Op. 27 Zueignung, Op. 10 No. 1 Nichts, Op. 10 No. 2 Die Nacht, Op. 10 No. 3 Die Georgine Op. 10 No. 4 Geduld Op. 10 No. 5 Die Verschwiegenen, Op. 10 No. 6 Die Zeitlose, Op. 10 No. 7 Allerseelen, Op. 10 No. 8 Sechs Lieder aus Lotusblättern, Op. 19 Befreit, Op. 39 No. 4 |
With many acclaimed and award-winning recordings under his belt and continuous opera and concert engagements, Daniel Behle’s career is definitely rocketing. His previous recordings have been well received with MusicWeb awarding his Die Schöne Müllerin CD on Capriccio (C5044) Recording of the Month. The critic said “Daniel Behle has presented himself as a significant interpreter of Lieder”, so Capriccio is delighted to present a selection of songs by Richard Strauss. Daniel Behle said of his latest recording: “I am a lyrical Tenor and as such, one just gets introduced to the Schöne Müllerin, later to the Dichterliebe and eventually to the Winterreise (although I allow myself more time for that one) in the course of one's studies. At the moment I am quite happy to have opened another page besides the lightly lyrical: to dip into the late romantic era and to discover the outgoing, active and hands-on aspects of the period.” “Soft, inward rapture for 'Ständchen' is Behle's excellent starting point...An easy confidentiality never allows over-inflection here...Whether or not the studio tells the truth, Behle is also able to bring a heroic sheen to the refulgent climaxes...which makes comparison with Jonas Kaufmann not inappropriate; but in any case this is a tenor with a candid, easy approach all his own.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 **** “This thrilling Strauss album makes me want to hear this young German tenor in everything he sings. His light lyric timbre is reminiscent, in its ascents to the stratosphere, of earlier German-speaking tenors (Tauber and Dermota spring to mind). He crowns Cäcilie with a stunning top B...breathtaking work from both singer and pianist.” Sunday Times, 6th May 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
