Haitink was 85 on 4 March 2014, and this set presents his six complete symphonic cycles by cornerstone classical composers: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Schumann and Tchaikovsky. Originally recorded for Philips, the CDs are now smartly re-packaged in a collectable cube, with a substantial 160-page booklet including extensive essays in 3 languages (English, French, German) and includes essays by authoritative writers such as William Kinderman (Beethoven), Michael Kennedy (Mahler) and John Warrack (Schumann and Tchaikovsky).

Every single symphonic cycle is played by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, recently voted by Gramophone Magazine as ‘The Greatest Orchestra in the World’. Dutch-born Bernard Haitink made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra on 7 November 1956. From 1963 Haitink was Principal Conductor, a position he held for 25 years. An exclusive Philips artist for more than 30 years, Haitink remains fully active on the international concert scene. 2013/14 is the 60th season of his conducting career.

“This comprehensive collection...contains some wonderful, cherishable things, but not everything is exceptional...[Scriabin, Mahler and Nono] seem to me to epitomise Abbado's greatness, the imagination and intellectual curiosity that combined with his supreme gifts as a musician.” The Guardian, 19th June 2014 ****

THE MUSIC:

• The collection includes no less than 11 discs featuring works which are first international CD releases - see below for listing.

• Phase 4 stepped into the classical arena in 1964 with the launch of the ‘concert series’, releasing over 200 albums in the series. Drawn largely from the concert series, this set shows Phase 4 in its prime – big classical works requiring large scale orchestras, ripe for the display of spectacular sound engineering feats. Big classical symphonies sit alongside major piano and violin concertos. Popular ballet titles such as Carmen, Swan Lake, Spartacus are also here.

• Film / Movie scores include Rózsa’s Music from Ben Hur, Music from the Great Hitchcock Movie Thrillers and Bernard Herrmann’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

• There are also big band specials, light classics from Arthur Fielder and Ketèlbey, Stokowski’s brilliant orchestral transcriptions and music which grabbed headlines back in the day – such as the Yellow River Concerto (first international CD release), probably the world’s most popular piece of Chinese-originated orchestral music.

• A BONUS CD in this set is Bob Sharples Battle Stereo. It took one year to produce, and required assistance from London’s crop of engineers to funnel all ten tape tracks down to the final two with the British Grenadier Guards and Her Majesty’s Horse Guards providing the soundtrack to what could be a motion picture about war.

THE ARTISTS:

• As well as its distinctive sound, Phase 4 was known for its range of loyal and charismatic artists. The included:

• The legendary Leopold Stokowski (star of Disney’s Fantasia) made several Phase 4 recordings, dating from the final years of his long and brilliant career and capturing his unique magic.

• Phase 4 stalwart Stanley Black, who excelled in every field imaginable from Latin-American to theatre, film and to classical.

• Antal Doráti who conducted the best-selling Peter and the Wolf, featuring Sean Connery as narrator.

• Academy Award-winner Bernard Herrmann, whose score of Journey to the Centre of the Earth had a lasting impact across Hollywood.

A comprehensive 40 CD overview of some of the most sonically-spectacular albums ever made, from a period when Decca enjoyed a clear technological lead over its competitors.

WHAT’S THE STORY?

• INCEPTION: ‘Phase 4 stereo’ was created in 1961 as an American subsidiary of Decca, and steered to success by New Yorker Tony D’Amato. 200 classical releases were eventually released within this label, with the first major classical releases 50 years ago in 1964.

• IMMEDIACY OF SOUND & A WIDE SOUND SPECTRUM: Using Decca’s 20-channel mixing desk, the label aimed to deliver an immediacy of sound which new recording and the LP techniques permitted, and thus give listeners an experience they would not obtain anywhere else either in the concert hall or from other labels. Phase 4 vividly expanded the scope and spectrum of recorded sound. See the YouTube video for details.

• THE TECHNOLOGY: A 4 track, 20 channel console mixer built especially by Decca. Each channel (recorded independently) of the console had equalisation and reverb/echo (electronic or chamber), and each channel was assignable to any of the 4 tracks of an Ampex tape recorder. For the early to mid-sixties this was state-of-the-art.

PACKAGING

• Lift-off rigid cube box (in the style of L’Oiseau Lyre)

• Original Sleeves (front and back)

• 128-page full-colour English-language booklet including ‘The Story of Phase 4’ by Tim McDonald (Producer for Phase 4 from 1972-78).

Decca Classics releases ‘Ashkenazy: 50 Years on Decca’ on 4 March 2013, a limited edition box-set comprised of 50 CDs to celebrate the label’s remarkable 50-year recording partnership with Vladimir Ashkenazy.

‘Ashkenazy: 50 Years on Decca - the Original Jacket Collection’ includes many key recordings since Ashkenazy’s recording debut for the label in March 1963.

Decca Classics’ new release showcases a rich and varied repertoire, with Ashkenazy’s now-legendary debut recording of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 featuring on the first of the 50 CDs ( with the LSO under the baton of Anatole Fistoulari). The collection includes Ashkenazy collaborating with some of classical music’s greatest conductors, such as Solti, Kondrashin, Maazel, Previn, Barenboim, Haitink and Mehta; accompanying great singers and instrumentalists such as Perlman, Harrell and Söderström; as virtuoso pianist in a wide range of solo repertoire; and as an internationally-renowned conductor, particularly of Russian and Nordic repertoire.

The limited-edition ‘Ashkenazy: 50 Years on Decca’ box-set is beautifully packaged with original LP jackets in the label’s now-familiar cube box with hinged lid, and also includes booklet notes in English and Japanese, a complete discography of Ashkenazy’s recordings on Decca, a composer index, and a unique article from his long-time producer Andrew Cornall on Ashkenazy in the studio, making this a collector’s essential.

In the days when new recordings were full price and collectors on a budget had to confine themselves to reissues, EMI’s Eminence label was a bold and appealing venture.

Eminence launched careers: most notably Nigel Kennedy’s, with his Gramophone Record of the Year-winning disc of Elgar’s Violin Concerto, but it also nurtured many other great musicians near the start of what would prove to be illustrious careers (such as Tasmin Little and Franz Welser-Möst) and captured others in their prime, such as Vernon Handley and Sir Charles Mackerras. With brand new recordings of a range of rare and classic repertoire, and captured with uncompromisingly good engineering, Eminence blazed a trail that many other labels followed. Here are many of the label’s finest recordings, united for the first time, and at a price that stays true to its founding philosophy of making great music available to the widest possible audience.

This new collection of 55 CDs from the acclaimed label offers a wealth of recordings from the 1950s and 1960s in an unrivalled range of repertory.

This ranges from solo Bach played by harpsichordist Rafael Puyana to American composer and conductor Howard Hanson in his own works as well as music by fellow-Americans. Key artists include Antal Dorati in works ranging from Beethoven to Bartók and Berg; Frederick Fennell, Rafael Kubelík, Paul Paray and János Starker.

An extensive 182 page booklet includes new essays on the history and development of the Mercury label by Thomas Fine (son of Wilma Cozart Fine, legendary producer of the MLP label) and Mike Gray. Numerous photographs are included and full recording information is documented. When we say full recording information, we mean it too. All the details collectors love to see is here: the microphones, the recording location, the original engineers, the subsequent remastering engineers, even the type of recording equipment.

Two CDs of true rarities are included: Dorati’s 1953 mono recording of The Rite of Spring; and making its first-ever appearance on CD is John Corigliano’s Piano Concerto. The CD also includes a rare 16 minute interview with Corigliano and pianist Hilde Somer.

Boston Symphony Orchestra

The BSO’s 1969-70 season was a landmark year for the orchestra with the arrival of distinguished conductor William Steinberg and the start of their recording legacy with DG. The label immediately reinforced its commitment to the BSO, spearheading the build of a dedicated control room in the basement of Symphony Hall. DG’s Boston strategy also saw them bring the company’s top conductors to the BSO.

From the start, Deutsche Grammophon also committed to recording a wide repertoire with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players (founded in 1964 and the first chamber ensemble made up of a major orchestra’s principal players).

The marriage between DG and the BSO saw recordings made under Steinberg, Thomas, Abbado, Kubelik, and also under DG stalwart Eugen Jochum, and Boston’s own Leonard Bernstein under his new exclusive contract with DG. Steinberg’s dynamic young successor Seiji Ozawa further reinforced their dominance as the leading orchestra in America through a number of critically acclaimed recordings. DG’s current collaboration with Andris Nelsons and the BSO continues this remarkable recording legacy with Shostakovich’ complete symphonies.

Invitation to the Dance, Op. 65

Between 1980 and his death in 1989, Herbert von Karajan recorded the incredible amount of 78 CDs worth of orchestral and choral music for DGG. In the final decade of his creative life, Karajan once again revisited some of the keystones of his repertoire, such as the Beethoven and Brahms symphonies, but also made quintessential recordings of major works he never touched before.

Among the highpoints of Karajan’s late years is the major part of his collaboration with Anne-Sophie Mutter, the “wunderkind” Karajan discovered in the late 1970s and mentored throughout the 1980s. The almost complete recordings of Richard Strauss’ great symphonic poems radically re-thought and played like you never heard them before under the great maestro’s baton. Massive renderings of Mozart’s and Verdi’s Requiems stand next to Karajan’s personal “requiems”: The famous 1987 New Year’s Concert and the “farewell” recordings of Bruckner 7 and Bruckner 8, where you can still experience how Karajan, struggling with his fading health, infused the music with contemplations about life and death. Pure musical magic, as powerful as it was 25 years ago!

The box contains the core of Karajan’s repertoire as an orchestral conductor:

Full symphony cycles of Beethoven and Brahms

Haydn: “Paris” and “London” Symphonies

Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 4-6

The celebrated Brahms, Bruch, Mendelssohn & Tchaikovsky concerto recordings with Anne-Sophie Mutter

Karajan’s artistic testament: His final recordings of Bruckner Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8

The famous New Year’s Concert of 1987

Karajan’s final take on the great works of Richard Strauss: “Eine Alpensymphonie”, “Ein Heldenleben”, “Also sprach Zarathustra”, “Tod und Verklärung” and many more

The legendary 1982 live recording of Mahler 9

Solemn and massive recordings of the Mozart and Verdi Requiems & Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis

Fascinating forays into repertoire that Karajan had not recorded before: Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 “The Inextinguishable” and Saint-Saëns’ “Organ”-Symphony

Three delightful albums with recordings of Strauss waltzes, marches & polkas

...and many more!

…It’s all there, 78 CDs of the original LPs, in their original cover art, most of them in their original couplings, arranged in four snug compartments.

On top of the CDs, there’s The Book: 200+ pages, containing two newly commissioned articles:

• an extensive new interview with Anne-Sophie Mutter, where she relates the story of her discovery by Karajan and sheds light upon his defining role as her mentor.

• Günther Breest, Karajan’s producer at Deutsche Grammophon, remembering the years he worked side by side with one of the greatest maestros of all times.

In addition, the book will contain a Karajan timeline, a tracklist with full recording details, a discography of Karajan’s 1980s opera recordings, and many photos of the maestro.
