Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13 'Winter Daydreams'

The Snow Maiden, Op. 12: orchestral excerpts

Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture

On the second installment in our series of Tchaikovsky Symphonies with the Gothenburg SO and Neeme Järvi, we go directly from the composer’s symphonic testament, Symphony No.6 ’Pathétique’, to his first attempt at the form. Symphony No. 1 in G minor (‘Winter Daydreams’) is the work of a 26-year old composer, and one that Tchaikovsky cherished all his life, referring to it as ‘a sin of my sweet youth’. It is not hard to find characteristics of his later music in this work, such as its melodic richness and its often extremely skilful orchestration. Two other fairly early works in the composer’s catalogue complete the programme.

The first of Tchaikovsky’s ”Shakesperean” overtures, Romeo and Juliet, was also one of his first great successes, and has remained one of his most popular works. In it the composer makes ample use of all the dramatic opportunities in the play: love, fighting and, finally, death.

In comparison, Snegurochka, or ’The Snow Maiden’, by the Russian poet Alexander Ostrovsky, is rather more like a fairy tale, telling the story of how the Snow Maiden, through love of a mortal being, herself becomes vulnerable and melts away with the first rays of the sun. The subject would seem to have appealed to the composer, whose incidental music received more praise than the play itself on its première in 1873. For this disc, Neeme Järvi has chosen to record four of his favourite episodes from the ca 80 minute long score. (The Dance of the Buffoons, which ends this ”suite” is often chosen by the conductor as an encore.)

“The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is on fine form and produces a warm, blended sound with admirable balance, well captured by the BIS engineers.” International Record Review

Festival Coronation March

Capriccio italien, Op. 45

Francesca da Rimini, Op. 32

Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture

Marche slave, Op. 31

Back in 1990, highly respected both nationally and internationally, Russian pianist and conductor Mikhail Pletnev formed the first independent orchestra in the history of his country, the Russian National Orchestra. Many of Russia’s finest musicians joined him in the launch of this ensemble, which achieved a towering stature among the world’s orchestras within a short period and which Pletnev continues to serve as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. Twenty-five years ago, the first recording the RNO ever made was of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique. This album combines Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Coronation March (1883), Capriccio Italien , Op. 45, Francesca da Rimini, Op. 32, Romeo and Juliet (1880) and Marche Slave, Op. 31. It completes the Tchaikovsky cycle including the integral symphonies and the Manfred Symphony, the RNO recorded for PENTATONE between 2011 and 2014, under the baton of its artistic director Mikhail Pletnev.

At the occasion of the orchestra’s 25th anniversary in 2015, the cycle was re-released as a 7-SACD box-set. With a musical content varying from virtuoso fireworks to ravishing lyricism, one could say this disc is a true coronation of the first 25 years of this magnificent orchestra.

Tchaikovsky:

Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture

Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony unleash the passion and triumph of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy-Overture, in a live, 192/24 bit recording released as a Hybrid SACD.

Passion, love and triumph, as imagined by Tchaikovsky, are captured in sweeping glory by the award-winning, chart-topping team of Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony. Tchaikovsky’s heroic Fifth Symphony and the passionate Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy-Overture, which features one of the best-known love themes ever written - receive rapturous performances under a conductor whose Russian roots reveal the very esssence of the composer’s emotional output.

Tilson Thomas says, “It has been possible in my life to not only perform [Tchaikovsky’s Fifth] a lot, but to harken back to the sense of elegance that Piatigorsky, Heifetz and Rubinstein imparted to me about this kind of music.” Captured live in the orchestra’s home, Davies Symphony Hall, the audiophile release was recorded in 192/24 bit and is released as a Hybrid SACD.

“The Fifth Symphony proves uncommonly thoughtful, urbane and dignified. Not only is the orchestral response scrupulously prepared and free of meretricious flashiness, the performance displays an enviable sweep and long-term control that pay handsome dividends…both sound and balance throughout are beyond reproach.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2015

Tchaikovsky:

Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 'Pathétique'

Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture

The Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard here perform two works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky as part of their “Opening Doors” series.

The series presents large-scale Romantic symphonic works with the clarity that a chamber orchestra can offer. Previous recordings include a full cycle of Schumann’s symphonies, Dvořák’s ‘New World Symphony’, and Symphony No. 2 by Bruckner.

The works here come from either end of Tchaikovsky’s career and are linked by the tragedy apparent in their endings.

“Tchaikovsky's textures are never problematically dense, but some of Dausgaard's tempi, especially his breakneck speed for the third-movement march, undermine the extra crispness the smaller-than-usual string section might have achieved.” The Guardian, 1st November 2012 ***

“The virtues are self-evident: Dausgaard elicits some impressively accomplished and consistently bright-eyed playing, textures are sifted with watchful care...and his readings are abundantly musical, free of eccentricity and eschew any spurious expressive posturing...their innate good taste and sense of classical equilibrium never allowing the listener to forget for one moment Tchaikovsky's veneration of Mozart.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013

Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture

To hear such dramatic Tchaikovsky compositions performed by a top Russian orchestra is a real treat, and when the recordings are of such high quality, even more so. The Evening Standard wrote of the Russian National Orchestra’s Prom debut; “They played with such captivating beauty that the audience gave an involuntary sigh of pleasure”.

“[the finale] has balletic energy and is refreshingly free from vulgarity, In Romeo and Juliet the orchestra is superbly responsive, shaping the love melody with nobility and warmth...The recording has a wonderful sense of depth, with the handover from horns to trombones at the opening of the symphony given thrilling immediacy in SACD sound.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2011 ***

“Perhaps the most remarkable things about these performances is their straightforwardness...[Pletnev] is without any quirks or deviations and leads the Russian National Orchestra in passionate and powerful performances, often with tempos quicker than the norm...and conjures compellingly direct accounts that are full-blooded, subtle and finely detailed.” International Record Review, May 2011

“Pletnev understands the text [of the Fourth Symphony] completely but he refuses to be drawn emotionally...[He] makes much of the oscillating rhythm which horns and harp develop in the love music [of Romeo & Juliet] and his sumptuous uncovering of harmony at the climax is richly satisfying.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2011

Manfred Symphony, Op. 58

Marche slave, Op. 31

Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17 'Little Russian': original first movement (1872)

Festival Coronation March

Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture

Francesca da Rimini, Op. 32

Tchaikovsky defined the symphony as being "the most lyrical of musical forms. After all, is it not meant to express that for which there are no words, but which forces itself out of the soul, impatiently waiting to be uttered?" With these words, the composer makes us aware of the special nature of his symphonies. They primarily provided him with a musical outlet for the expression and elaboration of his emotions, his mental and spiritual processes.

Between February 2011 and March 2014, PENTATONE released a highly acclaimed cycle of recordings of the complete symphonies by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, as well as the Marche Slave, the Festival Coronation March, Romeo and Juliet, Francesca da Rimini, Capriccio Italien and the Manfred Symphony.

All recordings are performed by the world class Russian National Orchestra under the direction of Mikhail Pletnev. This majestic cycle, with Symphony No. 5 selected as CD of the Month by BBC Music Magazine, is now presented in a magnificent 7 SACD box set.

A wonderfully complete collection allowing you to fully enjoy the unsurpassed lyrical mastery of Tchaikovsky in optimal sound quality.
