“A gripping version of the composer's last Mass.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2009 “Harnoncourt's recent Seasons was no flash in the pan as this 1998 Harmoniemesse with the same choir and orchestra shows. He marries symphonic sweep with Austrian religious pomp and circumstance.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 ***** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Haydn: Missa brevis (1749) & HarmoniemesseMasses Volume 6
The Missa brevis in F is Haydn’s earliest authenticated Mass and was written shortly before his departure from St Stephen’s in Vienna, where he had been recruited as a choirboy around 1740. Haydn himself, on rediscovering the work almost fifty years later, said he admired it for ‘the melody and a certain youthful fire’. In contrast, the Harmoniemesse, written for the nameday festivities of Prince Nicolaus II’s wife in 1802, was to be Haydn’s last major composition. Using a full Harmonie (wind band), the work’s expressive intensity belies the end of its composer’s career. | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Haydn - Harmony Mass
It’s always a very special musical event when two Bavarian Broadcasting ensembles join forces on stage – as in this case with the Chor and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. In the magnificent setting of Waldsassen Abbey Basilica in the Upper Palatinate, Mariss Jansons conducted an all-Haydn program in October of 2008: Haydn’s Harmony Mass ranks as one of the six great masses of his late creative period, composed on commission from Prince Esterházy. Its name refers to the unusually large complement of wind instruments, an orchestration that was only possible for the final great masses after the Josephinist restrictions for church music were lifted, and because, from 1792 on, Haydn had a larger instrumental ensemble at his disposal. Timpani and trumpets were used in the Symphony in G major, Hob. I:88, but not, as might be expected, in the opening allegro but rather – in contrast to expectations in those days – not until the slow second movement. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Haydn - Harmony Mass
An especially festive atmosphere, in which we can participate both acoustically and visually with this DVD, was the dominant mood of this concert in the famous Abbey Basilica of Waldsassen in the Upper Palatinate. Among lovers of baroque church architecture, Waldsassen ranks as one of the most significant sacred buildings in Bavaria. The lush setting also includes the richest treasure-trove of relics north of the Alps. In addition to the Symphony in G major, Hob. I:88 and the Sinfonia D major, Hob. Ia:7, the performance in Waldsassen in October of 2008 also included Franz Joseph Haydn’s Harmony Mass. 2.0 PCM Stereo 5.0 DTS Surround 5.0 Dolby Digital Surround “…filmed in the splendid surround of the ornate Baroque Basilica at Waldsassen, Bavaria… The Mass, with its grand and regularly celebratory liturgical manner, four soloists and chorus, seems particularly well suited to the venue and Brian Large's filming is intelligent in its focus on whatever is happening musically in the score at any given moment. The performance is of a very high standard... Mariss Jansons seeks out the humanity of Haydn's ideas, their wit... and their character...” BBC Music Magazine, February 2010 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Haydn - Sacred Choral Works
This new CD completes Helmuth Rilling’s recordings of the six late Masses of Joseph Haydn. “…the performances are strong, with Rilling's own measured pacing articulating the sizable structures of individual movements capably and pointing up many of the clever and effective touches Haydn includes to enliven familiar texts. Soloists in each instance form accurate and well-balanced quartets and the choirs are solid and neat. Haydn's sincere and unquestioning faith - he could say that when he thought of God, it made him feel cheerful - shines through.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 **** “…impressive indeed was Haydn's scoring of his last complete composition, the Harmoniemesse. Helmuth Rilling recognises its greatness, balancing the wind band (Harmonie) to make its presence felt, with trumpets and timpani prominently emphasising the dramatic thrust of the music. Yet the tender episodes are not underplayed. ..."Gratias agimus tibi"... has an ethereal beauty; and the pathos of "Et incarnatus est"... through to Christ's Crucifixion and burial, is most tactfully handled. This is an excellent interpretation...” Gramophone Magazine, June 2009 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. (Available now to download.) |

“With a 55-second Gloria for the Kleine Orgelmesse Hill certainly puts the 'brevis' into Missa Brevis. The late Harmoniemesse is thoughtful, Winchester's collegiate polish underpinned by instrumental punch and top drawer soloists.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2005 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

“Haydn's first major work, the Salve regina of 1756, is here juxtaposed with his last, the Harmoniemesse of 1802, so-called because of its exceptionally full scoring for woodwind. The gulf between the two works, in sophistication, mastery and emotional range, is predictably vast. Yet, in their very different ways, both reconcile the formal liturgical conventions of their era with the expression of Haydn's own lifeaffirming religious faith. Hickox and his forces ideally capture this sense of celebratory spiritual energy. Tempos are lively, rhythms alert and vital. In the Mass Hickox generates an exhilarating symphonic momentum in, say, the opening sections of the Gloria and Credo, and, aided by an outstandingly clear, well-balanced recording, realises to the full such dramatic coups as the sudden swerve into A flat in the recapitulation of the 'Benedictus' and the martial fanfares that slew the music from D major to B flat at the start of the 'Dona nobis pacem'. The steely edged valveless trumpets are thrilling here; and elsewhere the wind players do rich justice to Haydn's glorious writing, nicely balancing rusticity and refinement. Nancy Argenta's innocent, bell-like tones and graceful sense of line are heard to touching effect in the 'Et incarnatus est' of the Mass. In the Salve regina, she also reveals her deft, fluent coloratura technique. No great depths in this youthful work, but Haydn's setting of the Marian antiphon is elegant and affecting, with a command of shapely, Italianate melody and a feeling for dramatic contrast. This is certainly the most memorable work of Haydn's from the 1750s and aptly complements Hickox's fervent, inspiring reading of the Harmoniemesse.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
