Nino Machaidze (soprano) Bologna Teatro Comunale Orchestra, Michele Mariotti Nino Machaidze is one of today’s fastest rising young opera stars. At only age 25, the Georgian Soprano entered the international opera circuit with a spectacular debut at the 2008 Salzburg Festival replacing Anna Netrebko as Juliette in a new production of Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette" alongside tenor superstar Rolando Villazón. Her electric performance was greatly received by both the audience and the press ("A Juliette to Cherish" Opera News; “The discovery of the 2008 Salzburg Festival” Crescendo). In just three short years, Nino Machaidze has followed up her Salzburg debut with leading role debuts at the world's top opera houses, culminating in her New York Metropolitan Opera debut this January, where she received standing ovations. For her first Sony Classical recording "Romantic Arias" Nino has made a selection of the greatest bel canto and lyric roles. The disc features both arias from her career defining roles, as well as some new additions to her repertoire. “her nuanced phrasing is a wonder to behold...this album clearly underlines her star qualities and points towards majestic things to come.” Classic FM Magazine, October 2011 **** “Machaidze begins with Manon's farewell to her table, to which she brings sensitivity...[in Salut a France] Machaidze expands her tone in exultation, tossing off the roulades with vocal bravura and crowning the cabaletta with a secure and ringing final note. This is one of the best tracks in the programme, as is 'O luce di quest' anima'” International Record Review, October 2011 “Hers is one of the bigger voices on the bel canto circuit. Her theatrical intelligence is also promising: though her language articulation isn't great, she vividly projects the emotional content. Most obviously, the middle section of "Ah! Je veux vivre" from Romeo et Juliette takes on unusual gravity, revealing a character who defies family and mortality for love.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011 “Machaidze tears into roles with an energy that leaves the listener breathless. She produces a top note that would kill at half a mile to silence the chorus in the closing pages of 'Ah! Non giunge' from La Sonnambula. While Machaidze's tone occasionally may be uneven...you have to admire her finely honed technique. This is a voice that has been scrupulously prepared and the hard work shows” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Joan Sutherland: Operatic Arias
Her legendary 1959 debut operatic recital for Decca, released on a single CD for the first time. Bonus tracks taken from the 1950s L’Oiseau Lyre Handel recording featuring the Philomusica London and Anthony Lewis. Newly re-mastered. “The classic recital of arias that staked Joan Sutherland's claim to bel canto supremacy, plus Handelian extras - still fresh, airy and heartfelt today.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2011 ***** “Earlier this year (1959) we saw performances of Lucia di Lammermoor such as dreams are made on; now in December we listen again to this record, looking like idiots, marvelling, gasping and almost weeping.... The beauty of the voice, the astonishing technical accomplishment, the brilliance of the upper range, the tenderness and poignancy of the emotions.... In some respects indeed, the record is more cherishable than ever, because the mannerisms......... have hardly begun to take hold, and much of the best of the artist is here.” Gramophone Magazine “no rave review could really exaggerate the quality of this singing...one of the finest and most dramatically thrilling displays of coloratura ever recorded...this remains one of the gramophone's greatest recital discs.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

When Joan Sutherland died, many music critics commented on the quality of her voice in her early performances. The concert performances recorded here gave her the opportunity to deliver glorious singing without too many distractions. She was also able to collaborate with artists who she would not encounter in the opera house, such as Dennis Brain, heard here. | | Gala - GL100815 (CD - 2 discs) Normally: $13.25 Special: $11.26 |
