Philip Heseltine was born in London in 1894 and in his short life won public acclaim for the songs he wrote under the pseudonym Peter Warlock. He was particularly noted for his settings of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century texts, and brought the most delicate sensibility of the music of that period to his compositions. Warlock was considered an authority on Elizabethan music and in the course of his life he edited over three hundred Elizabethan and Jacobean lute songs for voice and keyboard or for choir.

Rarely can these works have been so beautifully and movingly performed on record as in this celebrated album, featuring John Mark Ainsley at the peak of his considerable powers, perfectly accompanied by Roger Vignoles.

“This is surely one of the best representations of Warlock on records” American Record Guide

“Whether you collect tenors, English music or simply good singing, don’t be without this” BBC Music Magazine

“Enthusiastically recommended” Fanfare

“Singer and song are ideally matched, pianist and piano part likewise, and the shade of Philip Heseltine should gain contentment” Gramophone Magazine

The last few years have witnessed a general resurgence of interest in the songs of early-to mid-20th Century British composers and this has been a welcome development for anyone interested in the genre. Whether on CD or in concert, through the actual published music or scholarly books on the subject, the work of such notable composers as Bax, Bliss, Brian, Bridge, Delius, Van Dieren, Finzi, Gibbs, Grainger, Gurney, Howells, Ireland, Vaughan Williams and Walton are generally becoming more widely known. And it is squarely within this musical tradition that the songs of the three composers represented on this CD find their place.

Originally released on the Dunelm label in 2006, this recording will now benefit from considerably wider distribution and promotion on the Diversions imprint from Divine Art.

Born in 1894, Peter Warlock was one of England’s great songwriters – described by Lennox Berkeley as one of the “most colourful talents in English 20th century music”. His output was prolific. In addition he was a distinguished editor and transcriber of a vast amount of early music as well as an author of several books and many articles, editor and music critic. He was very close to Delius – indeed was obsessed with Delius’s music and wrote a book about him, and also assisted Beecham in organising a Delius festival in 1929. He shared a cottage with fellow composer E. J. Moeran. He suffered bouts of depression and sadly he was found dead in his Chelsea flat in December 1930, of gas poisoning.

Gathered here are the original 78rpm recordings from the John Bishop Collection – divided into Orchestral and Chamber on CD1 and vocal items on CD2. John Bishop was one of the leading lights of the Peter Warlock Society, and all tracks have been remastered by Andrew Rose of Pristine Audio.

The booklet contains fascinating and informative notes, rare photographs and original 78rpm matrix numbers with recording dates.

Fussreise (No. 10 from Mörike-Lieder)

Der Rattenfänger (No. 11 from Goethe-Lieder)

Christopher Maltman (baritone) & Julius Drake (piano)

“It's Maltman's superb breath control which gives shape and sensuous beauty to Debussy and Dupare. And, thanks to Drake's restraining pace, Warlock's Captain Stratton's Fancy' has real swagger. Flanders and Swann's little masterpiece… about the Honeysuckle and the Bindweed, ends the recital in raptuous applause.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2008 ****

“Christopher Maltman… is remarkably skilful in the management of his voice, dealing wonderfully well with Debussy's high tessitura and still plumbing the depths with ease as he does at the end of "Der Wanderer" and "La vague et la cloche". Julius Drake is his perfect counterpart...” Gramophone Magazine, Janurary 2008
