Matthew White (counter-tenor), Meredith Hall (soprano), Michael Slattery (tenor) Nef, La, Skye Consort The Scottish and Irish airs and instrumental pieces chosen for this new sampler were selected from previous ATMA recordings by singers Meredith Hall, Matthew White, and Michael Slattery, along with ensembles La Nef and Skye Consort. The lyrics of traditional Scottish and Irish songs from the 17th and 18th centuries are closely related to the social life of the time, and several airs tell the stories of love between lads and lassies. Tenor Michael Slattery sings John Dowland’s songs with an Irish flavor, while soprano Meredith Hall and countertenor Matthew White perform Scottish music from the era of the famous Killiecrankie battle. |

| | | Dowland in Dublin
Michael Slattery (tenor), Sylvain Bergeron & Seán Dagher (direction & arrangements) La Nef Dowland dedicated his song From Silent Night “To my loving countryman, Mr. John Forster the younger, merchant of Dublin, in Ireland”, revealing his possible Irish origins. Working closely with the American tenor Michael Slattery, La Nef gives Dowland’s Ayres a simple celtic flavour. “…a talented and serious artist.” Gramophone. “La Nef has pared down Dowland's complex accompaniments, aiming for a Celtic, folky feel. Dowland-lite it may be, but the recital is beautifully performed.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 **** | | | (also available to download from $11.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | John Dowland - Lute Music Volume 1Fancyes, Dances & Spirits
“The prospect of a Nigel North set is something to drool over, and this first installment doesn't disappoint. Pre-eminently the lutenist's lutenist, North is steeped in the music - and technically beyond reproach. Can anyone slip the colourist gears as smoothly? Every opening chord makes you sit up and pay attention; lazy listening is never an option.” BBC Music Magazine ***** “…Nigel North… has organised his programme into alternative groups of dancelike pieces, often bearing the dedicatee's name, and free-form works of an often profound nature, including the seven superb Fantasies. The resultant light and shade, the changing moods and the robustness of much of the writing is perfectly mirrored in North's own deployment of tone, ornamentation and shifting emphases. This is mature playing of real depth.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2006 “A collector’s item” The Times BBC Music Magazine

| | | Dowland: Semper Dowland Semper Dolens
José Miguel Moreno (renaissance lute) & Eligio Quinteiro (theorbo & gittern) One of the most attractive and poignant repertories from across the whole Renaissance is undoubtedly to be found in the output of John Dowland, the composer of the greatly-admired Lachrimae and the musical representative of a whole philosophical, literary and artistic outlook when it comes to evoking melancholy. Lutenist José Miguel Moreno, co-founder of Glossa and architect of cult recordings devoted to Sylvius Leopold Weiss, JS Bach and Robert de Visée, could not miss out on his encounter with English repertoire and, in 2002, he recorded this double disc covering, across some 32 pieces, the most significant of Dowland’s works, and accompanied by Eligio Quinteiro on the theorbo or gittern (renaissance guitar). This is one of those albums which define the whole aesthetic standpoint of a label… |
