| | | Mariss Jansons conducts Mahler Symphony No. 2
Gustav Mahler’s gigantic Symphony No. 2 in C minor usually fi lls out a concert on its own. But in this recording with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) under its principal conductor Mariss Jansons, the work is introduced by an exquisite – and fi tting – choral work: A contemporary (1982) 16-voice arrangement of a song by Mahler, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, based on a poem by Friedrich Rückert and originally composed for voice and orchestra in 1901 – performed here by the superb Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Choir). The nickname “Resurrection” for Mahler’s Second Symphony is derived from the closing chorus of the last movement, in which Mahler set to music verses from Klopstock’s “Messias”. Although the symphony is a challenge to perform, due to the length of the work as well as the exceptionally large musical scoring, it has become part of the standard repertoire. The Second Symphony is a central work in Mahler’s oeuvre, a work whose Munich performance of 1900 brought him the long hoped-for recognition as composer. Sound Format: PCM Stereo, DD 5.0 Picture Format: 16:9, 1080i FULL HD Format: DVD 9 / NTSC Running Time: 96 mins FSK: 0 Region Code: 0 (DVD) Worldwide available |

| | | Music is the language of the heart and soulA portrait of Mariss Jansons
Mahler: | Symphony No. 2 in C minor 'Resurrection' |
This is the only available documentary about Mariss Jansons from his early career until present day. Jansons himself relates the story of his youth and education, historical footage shows the young maestro with his mentor Herbert von Karajan and taking his first steps towards an international career. Mariss Jansons is one of the leading conductors, performing with all the important orchestras in the world. Film maker Robert Neumüller observes Jansons in rehearsal for the New Year Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as working with the top orchestras he is currently heading, the Royal Concertgebouw and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. “Mariss Jansons is one of the best orchestra builders around.” The New York Times “No conductor has a more extraordinary story to tell than Mariss Jansons.” The Independent Running Time Total: 147 Minutes Documentary: 53 Minutes Concert: 94 Minutes BD: DTS-HD MA 5.1, PCM 2.0 “Most valuable is the footage of his father, conductor Arvid Jansons, and of his own early days as a Herbert von Karajan protege...Of Jansons's humanity and penetrating gifts as a conductor we hear heartfelt testimony from the pianist Lang Lang...the Mahler film fully displays Jansons's passionate physical engagement with the music.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 *** “The humility everywhere apparent points to the fact that, while much in Jansons's background would indicate musical success...that success was far from assured...The presumptions in the documentary are put well into practice in Mahler's Second Symphony...Jansons deploys his stage forces with such seamless attention to the score that Mahler's eruptions become part of a preconceived plan and not spontaneous outbursts for their own sake.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2012 “The preparation is scrupulous, featuring wonderful attention to detail. Every orchestral section displays immaculate intonation and ensemble, while the solos are always played with assuming virtuosity and the highest level of musicianship. The orchestra has always had a uniquely burnished sound that seems made for Mahler’s music.” MusicWeb International, December 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C minor 'Resurrection'
October of this year was the 100th anniversary of the Hamburg premiere of Mahler’s Second Symphony so this release by the Hamburg Philharmonic is very timely. The soloists are outstanding. Simone Young’s partnership with this orchestra is proving to be very successful: “What I like most about this performance (OC633 Bruckner Symphony No.1)… is its mixture of drama and warmth… Gramophone “In the 'Urlicht' - nobly enhanced by Dagmar Peckova's deep contralto timbre - Young (as directed by Mahler but rarely practised) separates and distances the trumpets at the start as if we've suddenly entered another realm.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2012 “Young's Second is, in a word, stunning. At once personally involving ad profoundly moving, this traversal finds her expertly marshalling highly accomplished forces through this 80-minute confrontation with life, death and the hereafter with such unwavering conviction that the ultimate triumph is never at issue...Young's new account merits high commendation and can hold its own in the most illustrious company.” International Record Review, May 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Boulez conducts Mahler
Mahler: | Symphony No. 2 in C minor 'Resurrection' Recorded live at the Philharmonie, Berlin, 26-27 March 2005 |
Born in 1925 in Montbrison, France, Pierre Boulez is one of the most distinguished composers and conductors in the world today. With his uncompromising approach to the score, Pierre Boulez’s Mahler readings have long fascinated critics and audiences alike. Boulez eschews the romanticized readings common in performance tradition and instead reveals the real joy and terror in Mahler’s large-scale symphonies. Vocalists Diana Damrau and Petra Lang join forces with the Staaatskapelle Berlin and the Staatsopernchor as the perfect ensemble to bring Boulez’s vision of this gargantuan piece to life. Boulez’s interpretation is truly infused with light. This performance really does give a new perspective on a much-loved symphony. Picture format: 1080i Full HD - 16:9 Sound format: PCM Stereo, DTS-HD Master Audio Region code: All Subtitles: English, German, French, Spanish Booklet notes: English, German, French Running time: 89 mins | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Mahler: | Symphony No. 2 in C minor 'Resurrection' |
The New York Philharmonic - America’s preeminent symphony orchestra - gave “A Concert for New York” to mark the tenth anniversary of the events of 9/11. What work could be better suited to the occasion than Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony with its “evocation of every aspect of life” and “its profound sense of hope”, as the Philharmonic’s Music Director Alan Gilbert put it? This concert became an unforgettable event, a “consistently impressive” performance with “gripping playing”, “magnificent” soloists and an “excellent” chorus (New York Times). BONUS (tbc): Alan Gilbert & Zubin Mehta about “A Concert for New York” Picture Format Blu-ray: Full HD Sound Formats Blu-ray: DTS HD Master Audio, PCM Stereo Region Code: 0 (worldwide) Running Time: approx. 96 min (tbc) Running Time Bonus: approx. 15 min (tbc) Disc Format: BD 25 FSK: 0 “Alan Gilbert has the right sense of momentum and expectation” BBC Music Magazine, January 2012 *** “Mahler’s extravagance must be appealing to DVD producers. With this music there’s a wide dynamic range and huge forces to watch...it’s predictably an emotive occasion. And Alan Gilbert’s performance is pretty sound, even if you crave a little more recklessness and excess. The recorded sound is a little raw, and you do get a feel for the sheer terror which this symphony can evoke” The Arts Desk, 14th December 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

But then it scarcely needs to...de Young's lustrous Wagnerian instrument makes an undoubted impact in the 'Urlicht' ...Roschmann's heartfelt contribution is another definite plus, pitch-perfect or not...However, this DVD release is not designed solely for those focused on music-making. Presentation and packaging signify a ritual of remembrance.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012 “There's a certain interpretative cautiousness apparent in Gilbert's reading from the outset...The playing is very good throughout, and never lacks for conviction - this is a wonderful orchestra on excellent form - but what left me less satisfied was a shortage of imagination in Gilbert's conducting...Whatever reservations I might have about the performance are perhaps a side issue to the real significance of the event itself” International Record Review, February 2012 “Mahler’s extravagance must be appealing to DVD producers.
