Schmidt - Symphony No. 2

Schmidt - Symphony No. 2

Schmidt, F:

Symphony No. 2 in E flat major

Fuga Solemnis for organ, sixteen wind instruments and percussion

Anders Johnsson (organ)

Following their recording of Franz Schmidt’s Symphony No. 1 and excerpts from his opera Notre Dame (8570828), the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Vassily Sinaisky here present Schmidt’s astonishing Second Symphony.

The composer transformed his original conception of the work as a piano sonata based on a single theme into a kaleidoscopic essay for a large orchestra, rich with wind, brass and percussion instruments.

The Fuga Solemnis for organ, brass and percussion is an enduring testament to Schmidt’s originality, inventiveness and mastery of counterpoint.

“…the Second Symphony… remains that rare combination, a work of tremendous immediate appeal and a compositional tour de force. Sinaisky and the Malmö Symphony get into the swing of Schmidt's freewheeling invention and with a splendid recording from Naxos... budget price this is self-recommending.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2009

“it's often transparently scored and, as Sinaisky's fine performance with the Malmö Symphony shows, the ideas, all stemming from the theme heard in the opening movement, are striking.” The Guardian, 16th October 2009 ***

“an essential two-disc set for admirers of Dimitri Mitropoulos, the Philharmonic orchestras of New York and Vienna, and, for that matter, 20th century music...muscular, fleet-footed, impassioned performances shot through with a winning blend of virile lyricism, rhythmic certainty and revelatory attention to detail.” Michael Quinn, bbc.co.uk, 5th June 2009
