Masses Volume 2

Trinity Choir & Rebel Baroque Orchestra, J. Owen Burdick

The Missa Cellensis (or Cäcilienmesse) was Haydn’s first Mass setting for his new employers at Eszterháza.

In common with his Stabat Mater (8572121), Haydn draws upon the wealth of musical styles and traditions associated with the Viennese Mass.

Scored for strings, oboes, bassoon, trumpets, timpani and organ, plus soloists and choir, the work may originally have comprised the Kyrie and Gloria alone, with the other sections added in the mid-1770s.

The final version, heard here, triumphantly concludes at ‘Dona nobis pacem’ with a grand fugue.

“The playing [of REBEL Baroque Orchestra] is stylish, rhythmic and technically assured...and there is remarkable precision of ensemble.” The Strad

Les Musiciens du Louvre, Marc Minkowski

2CD+Book

Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre’s latest recording present three major works celebrating Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music. While St Cecilia is the figure who inspired this recording, the album showcases music by three composers whose anniversary years are being celebrated in 2009: Purcell was born in 1659, while Handel and Haydn died in 1759 and 1809, respectively. The three featured works have never before been brought together on a single recording. The programme was performed earlier this year at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Barbican Centre in London, the Bozar in Brussels, and the Festspiele in Salzburg, and received an enthusiastic response from the press.

The vocal cast includes five outstanding soloists: Richard Croft, Lucy Crowe, Nathalie Stutzmann, Anders J. Dahlin and Luca Tittoto. Marc Minkowski chose to record a Missa Breve version of Haydn’s Cäcilienmesse, which includes only the Kyrie and Gloria. These were composed by Haydn some years before the complete Mass was written. Minkowski decided to focus on this shorter version, and to augment it with two exceptional arias from the complete mass, ‘Et incarnatus est’ and ‘Et resurrexit’. The accompanying 134-page book includes 12 paintings and representations of Saint Cecilia by the likes of Raphael, Rubens, Mignard, Lely, De Vouez, Da Cortona and Domenichino. A deluxe edition that enhances this ambitious project.

“Lucy Crowe… is a natural Purcellian, and gilds the discs' triumph: Handel's A Song for St Cecilia's Day, a thrilling encounter with Dryden unmediated. Galvanised by Minkowski exquisite detailing, the Musiciens du Louvre is on white-hot form throughout, but in the Handel, Nils Wieboldt's plangent cello sets the scene for 'What Passion' with such ear-tugging sensitivity a lesser singer than Crowe might have been utterly sidelined.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2009 *****

“...the players and singers delight in this magical music.” Sunday Times, 29th November 2009 ***

Haydn:

Mass, Hob. XXII: 2 'Missa sunt bona mixta malis'

“This is the only current recording of the fragmentary Missa sunt bona mixta malis, consisting only of a brief setting of the Kyrie followed by a more expansive setting of the Gloria, which is cut off after the 'Gratias agimus tibi'. Improbably, the score was discovered as recently as 1983 in a farmhouse in the north of Ireland. Dating from 1768, it's tantalising having only a fragment when the contrapuntal writing presents Haydn at his most striking in this period. It makes a fascinating supplement to Hickox's superb account of the longest setting of the liturgy that Haydn ever composed.
The title of the Missa cellensis – referring to the small Austrian town of Mariazell – is misleading in two ways. It's obviously so when there's another, later Mass also entitled Cellensis, but equally because it seems highly unlikely that so ambitious a work as this was ever designed for such a place as Mariazell: it was more probably written for a grand occasion in Vienna. So it would surely be less confusing to return to the usual title for this work, 'St Cecilia Mass'.
This is a 'cantata-mass' very different from Haydn's usual settings which involve a single movement for each of the six sections of the liturgy.
Here instead, the liturgy is divided into 18 separate movements. Hickox's new version gains over the fine Preston issue from the late 1970s in weight and warmth of expression, helped by the Chandos recording which, while warm, allows ample detail in the many splendid contrapuntal passages. The choir's sopranos are amply bright and boyish and achieve a crisp ensemble. The soloists make an outstanding, responsive team.”
