Claire Booth (soprano), Christopher Glynn (piano)

Soprano Claire Booth and pianist Christopher Glynn explore the fascinating and multifaceted folk song output of the original and inventive composer Percy Grainger.

Percy Grainger was an extraordinary human being and musician - a precocious pianist, colourful composer and world traveller, a peculiarly passionate and emotive eccentric whose fertile mind produced an expansive oeuvre of original and inventive works. Above all Grainger is best known for his most enduring musical endeavour, his exploration and dissemination of folk music. With this release, soprano Claire Booth and pianist Christopher Glynn, who have spent decades delving into Grainger's folk music output, document their fascination with the multifaceted firebrand, and bring his alluring music to a wider audience.

Grainger's success resulted in multiple versions of his folk song settings, for orchestra, wind band, chamber ensemble and choir. But it's perhaps his versions for voice and piano that are the most characteristic, bringing out Grainger's own highly individual style at the keyboard. Claire's and Christopher's survey, one of the most comprehensive available on the market today, offers a variety of transcriptions of songs found in collections from the British Isles as well as discoveries Grainger heard as he roamed throughout the field. The album concludes with Grainger's most celebrated piece, English Country Gardens, in which Claire makes a cameo appearance on piano, joining Christopher in a rousing duet.

“Claire Booth and Christopher Glynn have nurtured a love of Grainger’s folk song transcriptions and re-compositions since university days 20 years ago. Now the love has exploded onto this CD, a cunning arrangement of 11 vocal and seven instrumental tracks throbbing with Grainger’s idiosyncratic genius for creating miniature masterpieces of human anguish and delight” BBC Music Magazine, July 2017 **

“The clear-voiced British soprano captures the wit and whimsy of the Australian-born maverick to perfection, despatching the folk-song settings with unaffected simplicity before joining her accompanist at the keyboard for the piano duet version of Grainger's best-known arrangement, Country Gardens.” Katherine Cooper, Presto Classical, April 2017

“Booth and Glynn beautifully manage the contrasts between simplicity and immense sophistication that all these songs regularly provide; it makes a really engaging sequence.” The Guardian, 26th April 2017 ****

Peter Pears (tenor)

“these early recordings show the delight within Pears's and Britten's responses to Schubert and to English song.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2013 ****

“The recordings reissued on this release date from the years between 1947 and 1960, at a time when the mannerisms which unfortunately sometimes marred Pears’s later recordings were not so evident...These recordings are all available elsewhere in various compilations of Pears’ art, but it is valuable to have them gathered on this very reasonably priced disc.” MusicWeb International, 19th June 2013

Recording locations: ‘The Maltings’ Concert Hall, Snape, UK, December 1968 (CD 1: 1-14), November 1972 (CD 1: 15-19, CD 2: 1-3, 5-7, 9-10), March 1976 (CD 2: 4); unknown location, May 1927 (CD1: 8); All Hallows, Gospel Oak, London, UK, February 1994 (The Warriors)

A composer with an extraordinary ear for sonority, original in his outlook, sometimes misunderstood, now revered, Percy Grainger is one of Australia’s most unique sons, and, in the words of Sir Peter Pears, one of its “most independent and single-minded spirits”. Many of these recordings, of vocal and chamber orchestra pieces, were made by Decca in 1968 and 1972 and issued, together with a 1927 recording of Grainger playing his Country Gardens and of Peter Pears and Osian Ellis performing Six Dukes wenta-fishin’ in two volumes, with the title Salute to Percy Grainger. The title is retained for this anthology and to it is added Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Deutsche Grammophon recording of The Warriors, presenting nearly two hours of some of Grainger’s finest utterances in some of their earliest (and best) performances to be captured on record. Ten of these items [CD2: 1-10] make their first appearance on CD.

The performers are a Who’s Who of great Decca artists. Benjamin Britten and Steuart Bedford share the conducting duties on the Decca recordings, and the vocalists include Sir Peter Pears, Anna Reynolds and John Shirley-Quirk, together with the Ambrosian Singers and the Wandsworth Boys’ Choir. The notes are written by celebrities too – Sir Peter Pears and Grainger scholar, John Bird – and include affectionate reminiscences. Complete song texts are included.

"This is an altogether delightful anthology, beautifully played and recorded by these distinguished artists … the recording is an extremely good one” Penguin Guide ***

“the enchantments remain … will surely give pleasure” Gramophone

“This two-CD collection includes Britten's classic 1968 recording, which is one of the best of all Grainger recitals in itself...Dazzling sound.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition

“The performances by Britten, the tenor Peter Pears and the glorious baritone of John Shirley-Quirk, not to mention the Ambrosian Singers, Linden Singers and Wandsworth Boys’ Choir, have a finesse that defines an imperilled English musical tradition we are in danger of losing.” Sunday Times, 31st October 2010 ****

Benjamin Britten (piano) & Peter Pears (tenor)

Britten and Pears early collaborations for HMV display an infectious vigour. Britten’s own works, the Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, Op.22 and the Holy Sonnets of John Donne, Op. 35. are given definitive readings. Also included are folk song settings by Britten, Grainger and Copland and the programme concludes with two of Schubert’s most famous songs ‘Im Fruhling’ and ‘Auf der Bruck’. Essential listening for fans of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears.

This reissue commemorates the 50th anniversary of Grainger’s death in February 1961.

Harmonium, four guitars, two mandolas, two mandolins, two ukuleles, piccolo, three clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, two alto saxophones, horn, strings, piano, baritone and choir: and that’s just the scoring for one piece, the famous sea shanty Shallow Brown.

Grainger’s Jungle Book cycle was recorded here (for the original Hyperion release) for the first time. The eleven contrasting movements vividly portray the sentiments of Kipling’s poetry and Grainger wrote of the cycle that it was ‘composed as a protest against civilization’.

“Unquestionably an important and relishable release” Hi-Fi News

“This disc offers a sympathetic, endearing portrait of a composer too often valued for his wackiness and eccentricity alone” Classic CD

“Grainger's cycle evokes the lyrical side of Kipling's animal tales. As with the coupled folk arrangements, it's beautifully sung.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ****
