Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)

Ronald Brautigam continues his traversal of Beethoven’s complete works for solo piano with a group of early variations.

The Dressler Variations were Beethoven’s first published work and started a forty-year association with the variation form.

The Dressler Variations are certainly less heavy-weight than his later works, but the so-called Venni Amore Variations, WoO 65 point forward to a much later period in Beethoven's œuvre.

In this series, Ronald Brautigam has previously recorded early sonatas and sonatinas from the same period as the present works. As on the previous instalment in the series, Brautigam has chosen to perform these early variations on a fortepiano after a Walter & Sohn instrument from c.1805.

“ This instrument has a light tone and touch but is by no means limited in terms of dynamic range, and Ronald Brautigam performs even the least inspiring of these works with a conviction and musicality which makes you believe in their worth. In its own right this is more than a mere set of curiosities, and especially the Venni Amore variations are very impressive. As part of the series this release is indispensable.” MusicWeb International, August 2012

Susan Kagan (piano)

Christian Gottlob Neefe flourished as the Baroque was giving way to the Classical period. These Twelve Sonatas represent important steps in this transition, each having a uniquely individual character and showing a mixture of styles. Neefe is remembered today as Beethoven’s first main teacher in Bonn, the Dressler Variations being young Ludwig’s first published composition.
