“The Piano Quartet displays their glowing warmth of tone and carefully scaled dynamics… what’s not to like here?” Fanfare “The Maggini Quartet and Peter Donohoe give a commanding performance of the Piano Quartet, locating an underlying toughness of argument and urgency of expression in both outer movements to make one regret all the more forcefully the budding composer's decision to withdraw the piece following his demobilisation in 1919. Otherwise unrepresented in the domestic catalogue, the Viola Sonata was written in 1933 for Lionel Tertis. If Bliss's inspiration lacks the distinctive melodic profile and organic mastery of, say, Walton's Viola Concerto of four years previously, the work as a whole is still worth getting to know. The Maggini's violist, Martin Outram, makes commendably light of the solo part's at times hair-raising demands and Donohoe offers exemplary support. But the jewel in this anthology is the Oboe Quintet that Bliss composed in 1927 for Leon Goossens. Elegance and resourcefulness are the watchwords in the first two movements, whose bitter-sweet lyricism forms an effective contrast with the exuberant festivities of the finale. Nicholas Daniel and the Maggini give a spry, ideally proportioned reading. Production-values throughout are of a high order. Very warmly recommended.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $5.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Vermeer Quartet Alex Klein (oboe) The esteemed Vermeer Quartet joins forces with phenomenal oboist Alex Klein in three pillars of 20th-century British chamber music. Benjamin Britten's spellbinding Phantasy Quartet (1932) for oboe, violin, viola, and cello was his first work to gain international recognition. This passionate piece displays elements that became hallmarks of his unique style. Noteworthy for its sublime balance between oboe and strings, Arthur Bliss's gorgeous Quintet for Oboe and String Quartet (1927) deftly blends diverse styles and influences, concluding with the ingenious use of an Irish jig. In a fitting finale, the Vermeer plays Britten's last major work, the String Quartet No. 3 (1975). The New York Times says of the valedictory piece, "Every episode. . . seems to emanate from some mystical realm." “…an enterprising and useful coupling. Britten's trim and deft little Phantasy Quartet is hardly over-recorded, while Arthur Bliss's Oboe Quintet of 1927, with its delightful Irish-jig finale, has remained virtually unknown in comparison to his later Clarinet Quintet. Alex Klein, principal oboe of the Chicago Symphony, gives deeply affectionate, incisively characterised accounts of both these pieces, his rich and plangent tone coming into its own in Bliss's sumptuous central Andante.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2007 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

This enthralling five-CD conspectus opens with the symphony that established Bliss’s name in 1922 and goes on to survey his ballet, film, chamber and vocal music in authoritative recordings, many of them attended and endorsed by the composer. The final disc shows Bliss as unmatched conductor of his own music, from the occasional prelude for the 900th anniversary of Westminster Abbey to a real rarity: Dame Joan Sutherland’s first studio recording, the Song of Welcome for the young Queen Elizabeth II. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

The Melos Ensemble was formed by musicians who wanted to play chamber music scored for a larger ensemble in a combination of strings, winds and other instruments with the quality of musical rapport only regular groups can achieve. All its members were excellent musicians who held positions in notable orchestras and appeared as soloists. The clarinettist Gervase de Peyer, flautist Richard Adeney, viola player Cecil Aronowitz and cellist Terence Weil were the founding members. Planned as a group of twelve players – string quintet, wind quintet with piano and harp – this could be expanded by other players to perform an enormous range of works from Mozart through the classics and romantics of Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms to Bartók, Janácek, Nielsen, Poulenc and Khatchaturian. They also gave first performances and then recorded works by four then young British composers: Richard Rodney Bennett, Harrison Birtwistle, Gordon Crosse and Peter Maxwell Davies. The principal musicians who joined the initial four were the violinists Emanuel Hurwitz and Ivor McMahon, double bass player Adrian Beers, oboist Peter Graeme, horn player Neil Sanders, bassoonist William Waterhouse, pianist Lamar Crowson and harpist Osian Ellis. Many of the recordings are classics of the Gramophone and have been rarely out of the catalogue. Here is a set bringing together all their recordings made during those fifteen halcyon years of glorious music-making. “There is plenty of individual personality in the music-making here, but how beautifully these fine musicians blend together as a group...the polished elegance and charm of their playing cannot be heard to better effect than in the lovely Mozart Clarinet Quintet and Kegelstatt Trio, with Gervase de Peyer's beautiful solo playing richly limpid yet vital, and first-class recording.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
