Glinka: Nocturne in F minor 'Separation'

Glinka’s piano works are part and parcel of Russian Romanticism. They are mostly unknown works but are fascinating, due to their sincerity and elegance of sound. This is the first recording of these pieces on the pianoforte and Titiania Loguinova performs them on a Conrad Graf pianoforte, made in Vienna in 1825.

This new release focuses on Glinka’s guitar music. When listening to this music it is difficult not to notice the Spanish influence, despite his Russian roots.

John Schneiderman and Oleg Timofeyev perform the works on a Russian seven string guitar which differs significantly from the Spanish guitar in construction, tuning, and technique and became popular in Russia in the late eighteenth century.

The music of these two composers spans a period in Russian history that saw a remarkable output of creative and artistic achievement. Michael Ginka died in 1857, Alexei Stanchinsky was born in 1888 and died in 1914 yet both composers share that distinctive Russian romanticism as composers.

From Krumpholtz to Glinka this a collection of music through the history of the single-action harp. Soloist Masumi Nagasawa plays an Erard single-action harp (1820). She has appeared with the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, the St. John’s College Choir Cambridge and as accompanist with Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Cecilia Bartoli. Besides her performances, she has composed and arranged various pieces for the harp, which have been published and recorded.
