Atrium Musicæ de Madrid, Gregorio Paniagua

Setting off on a sonic journey through Europe, Gregorio Paniagua and his acclaimed ensemble Atrium Musicæ de Madrid took the famous theme known as La Spagna, used widely by composers across Europe for several centuries, as the starting point in their quest to bring to life the many and varied old scores that used this themes.

In their recording, the ensemble used a huge range of instruments, from clavicytherium (a ‘vertical harpsichord’) to a simple plastic cup, and the vivid performances and no less vivid recording enchanted both early music fans and audiophiles.

This is the first re-edition of the entire programme from this legendary 1980 recording.

Seldom Sene recorder quintet

Taracea is the Spanish word for an inlaid decorative work of pieces of coloured wood. This craft was a source of inspiration for the recorder ensemble Seldom Sene in their choice of repertoire fort heir first CD: a juxtaposition of masterworks for 5 centuries, together forming a harmonious unity. We find works by Renaissance masters Cabezon, Josquin, Tallis, Tye, we travel the Baroque with Holborne, Boismortier and Bach, we end up in the 20‐th century with Reger, Gheysen, Nasapoulou: a fascinating journey!

The Dutch ensemble Seldom Sene plays a wide variety of instruments, from the twittering sopranino to the deep sonority of the bass recorder, an immense spectrum of sounds.

Excellent and extensive liner notes by the artists, as well as biographies and photos.

Ciaramella

Ciaramella captures the virtuosic essence of the likes of Johannes Ciconia, Guillaume Dufay, Johannes Pullois and Alexander Agricola. Never heard of them? Don’t worry - after listening to this recording, you won’t forget them, and will find yourself awake at night, dreaming for more.

Ciaramella recreates improvisations in historical style, bringing the practice of fifteenth-century jazz back to life. You won’t quickly forget the sound of the Renaissance shawm and bagpipes, mastered with uncanny skill by the members of Ciaramella.

Sei gelobt, du Baum (for baritone, gittern, violin & double bass)

world premiere recording

Ensemble Leones: Raitis Grigalis (baritone), Baptiste Romain (violin, vielle), Elizabeth Rumsey (viola d’arco, viola da gamba), Uri Smilansky (viola d’arco), Kirsty Whatley (harp), Gawain Glenton (cornetto) & Marc Lewon (Renaissance lute, gittern, viola d’arco, direction)

The debut CD of Ensemble Leones is devoted to one of the key composers responsible for the blossoming of instrumental music: Josquin Desprez (c1450-1521). This is intended as a fitting tribute to his previously neglected secular instrumental works, which were compiled in 14 musical blocks: in many cases, a simple monodic (folk) song provided the model for Josquin’s polyphonic elaboration, permitting a sort of ‘theme with variations’.

The bonus track presents a new composition “Sei gelobt, du Baum“ by Arvo Pärt. It is written for two instruments, Baroque violin and Renaissance gittern, both of which were made from the wood of a 2000-year-old piece of silver fir timber from a vineyard in Switzerland. The composition binds together the old instruments and tonal quality of the early music ensemble with the present day.

Jérôme Lejeune

8CD + Book

Jérôme Lejeune continues his History of Music series with this boxed set devoted to the Renaissance. The next volume in the series after Flemish Polyphony (RIC 102), this set explores the music of the 16th century from Josquin Desprez to Roland de Lassus. After all of the various turnings that music took during the Middle Ages, the music of the Renaissance seems to be a first step towards a common European musical style.

Josquin Desprez’s example was followed by every composer in every part of Europe and in every musical genre, including the Mass setting, the motet and all of the various new types of solo song. Instrumental music was also to develop considerably from the beginning of the 16th century onwards. The musical excerpts that we have chosen include works by the most important composers of France, Italy, Germany, England, Spain and the Netherlands active during the 16th century. This boxed set is released in collaboration with the Château d’Écouen (Musée national de la Renaissance) in connection with the exhibition devoted to Renaissance music that will open there in September 2013.
