| | | Les Fantaisies de JosquinThe Instrumental Music of Josquin Desprez
Ensemble Leones: Raitis Grigalis (baritone), Baptiste Romain (violin, vielle), Elizabeth Rumsey (viola d’arco, viola da gamba), Uri Smilansky (viola d’arco), Kirsty Whatley (harp), Gawain Glenton (cornetto) & Marc Lewon (Renaissance lute, gittern, viola d’arco, direction) The debut CD of Ensemble Leones is devoted to one of the key composers responsible for the blossoming of instrumental music: Josquin Desprez (c1450-1521). This is intended as a fitting tribute to his previously neglected secular instrumental works, which were compiled in 14 musical blocks: in many cases, a simple monodic (folk) song provided the model for Josquin’s polyphonic elaboration, permitting a sort of ‘theme with variations’. The bonus track presents a new composition “Sei gelobt, du Baum“ by Arvo Pärt. It is written for two instruments, Baroque violin and Renaissance gittern, both of which were made from the wood of a 2000-year-old piece of silver fir timber from a vineyard in Switzerland. The composition binds together the old instruments and tonal quality of the early music ensemble with the present day. | | | La Spagna: A Tune Through Three CenturiesVariations on a Spanish Theme
Setting off on a sonic journey through Europe, Gregorio Paniagua and his acclaimed ensemble Atrium Musicæ de Madrid took the famous theme known as La Spagna, used widely by composers across Europe for several centuries, as the starting point in their quest to bring to life the many and varied old scores that used this themes. In their recording, the ensemble used a huge range of instruments, from clavicytherium (a ‘vertical harpsichord’) to a simple plastic cup, and the vivid performances and no less vivid recording enchanted both early music fans and audiophiles. This is the first re-edition of the entire programme from this legendary 1980 recording. | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
