Sebastian Knauer (piano), Hannelore Elsner (narrator)

Chopin spent the winter of 1838/39 with George Sand and her children in Majorca, where they stayed in an abandoned Carthusian monastery at Valldemosa. George Sand wrote a famous and popular story about the holiday. On this CD Sand's words, taken from her memoirs, are spoken by Hannelore Elsner.

“Pairing a selection of Chopin's works with George Sand's accounts of the nightmarish winter she and the composer spent together in Majorca, this performance is beautifully played and read.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2011 ***

“superbly well played with the benefit of a beautifully voiced and recorded instrument” Gramophone Magazine, May 2010

Alain Planès (piano Pleyel 1837coll. Anthony Sidey)

A journey into Chopin's world . . . On 21 February 1842, the Polish composer gave one of his very rare concerts: he did not enjoy appearing in public, for his music was above all a chamber art. Alain Planès has striven to recreate the programme of this concert as closely as possible and recorded it on a Pleyel piano of 1836 that the composer might have played. The questions he throws up in the process are fascinating: how did Chopin play? Apart from his famous rubato, what was the role of ornamentation, and indeed improvisation?

“The revelations stem from the admirable restraint of Planès's playing...The Nocturnes... combine elegance with profundity, while the selection from the Op 25 Etudes is exquisitely done.” The Guardian, 7th January 2010 ****

“…Planès himself works poetic magic, with wonderfully paced phrasing and a style of rubato replete with beautifully judged elasticity and grace; and he has explored Chopin's approach to improvised ornamentation to tasteful effect. There's not a meaningless note in the whole disc.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2010 *****

“Alain Planès...is obviously at home with the instrument, and plays finely. He also makes a gallant attempt at recapturing Chopin’s famously fluid style of playing. The A flat ballade is particularly pleasing.” Sunday Times, 28th February 2010 ****

Ivan Moravec (piano)

There are treasures tangible and glittering, and there are gems concealed, only revealing themselves to the serene and seeking. The world-famous Czech pianist Ivan Moravec is among the latter – and the same can be said of his recordings.

He doesn’t need to set out to shock and purposefully set himself apart. The seeming matter-of-factness with which Moravec performs Chopin led a Gramophone (II/1992) reviewer to speculate that this is perhaps how the composer’s piano improvisation might have sounded. Each tone in its dynamism, each fine accent is well considered and has its place amid the whole. Moravec masterfully balances free agogics with a sense for the overall structure.

Chopin’s genius stands out most expressively in tiny compositions – and it is in these that Ivan Moravec’s mastery is the most distinct; it is not by chance that he has the reputation of being one of the greatest living interpreters of Chopin’s works. Bearing witness to this are enthusiastic reviews of the first release of the presented recording (1991, Dorian). Now Supraphon – to the delight of all Chopin lovers and Ivan Moravec fans – is bringing this remarkable album back to life.

“Individual without being idiosyncractic, Moravec's Chopin is all-embracing, capturing in equal measure the elegance, the brilliance and the profound psychological complexity of a tormented genius.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2011 *****

Mazurkas Op. 59 Nos. 1-3

Recorded: 31 October 1967, Saal 2, WDR Köln

“Not only one of the most talented virtuosi of her generation, she can do what at most only a dozen pianists in the world are capable of.” Joachim Kaiser (Süddeutsche Zeitung, 1967)

A sensational solo Chopin recital for Chopin Year 2010 – previously unreleased radio recordings from 1959 / 1967

Includes works new to the Argerich discography (Ballade no.1, 4 Mazurkas, C# minor Etude)

Taken from radio recordings made in Berlin and Cologne in 1959 and (mainly) 1967, here is over an hour of newly-discovered Martha Argerich solo recordings of Chopin, all released for the first time and including works otherwise not recorded by her (Ballade no. 1, Mazurkas opp. 24/2, 33 /2,41/1&2, C# minor Etude).

From her epic First Ballade to the overpowering live Third Sonata — with exquisite performances of Mazurkas and Nocturnes in between — the recital demonstrates what a force of nature she already was in her first decade on the international music scene — “a veritable powerhouse of the emotions”, as Jürgen Otten writes in his liner notes.

“Most notable of them all is a performance of the First Ballade, from 1959, when Argerich was 18, full of youthful fire and astonishing technical brilliance, while an account of the C sharp minor Etude, Op 10 No 4 from 1967 is equally dazzling.” The Guardian, 18th March 2010 *****

“...imbued with a youthful energy, particularly the dazzling, industrious Etude in C sharp minor which seems to encompass entire worlds within two minutes...a bravura display of technique in the service of emotion.” The Independent, 9th April 2010 ****

“Of the playing here, I shall just say it's no wonder she won the Chopin Competition. Likewise in the three Mazurkas Op. 59...she captures their intimacy and lightning changes of mood to perfection....In the [concerto's] finale (for once truly agitato) she sweeps all before her with breathless exhilaration.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010

“She was only 18 at the time, yet this belongs with other great interpretations for its mixture of poetry and virtuosity. At once shy and passionate, the performance is atmospheric in clean mono sound...Essential listening for anyone interested in Argerich, Chopin, or indeed the art of the piano.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2010 *****

“it captures the Argentine workhorse at her most powerful and alluring...Argerich, clearly focused, coaxes incredible narrative-led performances from these works...Exhausting, truthful and invigorating.” Daniel Ross, bbc.co.uk, 29th March 2010

Janina Fialkowska is a regular guest soloist with the world’s most prestigious orchestras and has worked with conductors such as Haitink, Metha, Solti and Slatkin. She was born in Montreal amd her career was launched by Arthur Rubinstein after her prize winning performances at the first piano competition held in his name in 1974.

“There is a new and unmistakable joie de vivre, an almost improvisatory abandon and, frequently, a sense of sheer unbuttoned fun not normally associated with either Fialkowska of Chopin...every subdivision is clear, shapely and dynamic.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2010 *****

“As in the past everything is scrupulously worked and considered...In her curtain-raiser, the C sharp minor Polonaise, she is as keenly responsive to its robust clarion call to attention as she is to the central meno mosso's melting lyricism.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2010

“Fialkowska reveals herself as a great Chopinian poet who can make the piano sing and dance. Her immaculately judged rubato never sounds calculated, but respects the bel canto inspiration of Chopin’s haunting melodies...This is some of Chopin’s greatest music and the playing is sheer bliss.” Sunday Times, 16th May 2010 *****

“Fialkowska's affinity with the Romantic repertoire shines through in this live recording. These are sensitive and expressive performances.” The Independent on Sunday, 12th December 2010
