Renata Tebaldi (soprano), Giorgio Favaretto (piano) & Richard Bonynge (piano)

It is difficult to dissociate the pure, warm tones of Renata Tebaldi’s voice from her usual operatic repertoire – the heroines of the Italian lyric stage of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries which, thanks to her exceptional vocal and dramatic endowment, she interpreted so superbly. That these unforgettable portrayals were not just the product of instinct, however, but are backed by a sound musical schooling and a deep and penetrating intelligence, is shown by these recitals recorded with pianist Giorgio Favaretto (1956 and 1957) and with conductor/pianist Richard Bonynge (1972) in which Tebaldi offers us a comprehensive survey of the art of song in a succession of vocal styles, from Arie Antiche (Scarlatti, Handel), music by Mozart and Rossini (including one of her specialities, La regatta Veneziana), through to gems from 19th-century bel canto and verismo composers (Donizetti, Bellini, Mascagni) and into the twentieth century (Zandonai, Respighi, Martucci, Tosti).

“At a relaxed mezzo forte Tebaldi’s voice is still the lovely instrument we know from earlier days […] Bonynge is a discreet and sympathetic accompanist” Gramophone Magazine, August 1973 (CD2: 7–22)

“recommended without reservation […] exemplary versions of bel canto songs” Gramophone Magazine, June 1997 (CD1, CD2: 1–6)

“Lungi dal caro bene … is a very lovely melody and beautifully sung […] The Rossini song “La promessa” is delightful, and I also much enjoyed Tebaldi’s moving singing of the two Bellini songs and of the lively Verdi number.” Gramophone Magazine, May 1957 (CD1 1–14)

“[Tebaldi] makes a noble effect in the spacious, elegiac arias by Scarlatti. The Handel too is fine in a monumental way.” Gramophone Magazine, May 1958 (CD1: 15–22, CD2: 1–6)

Marco Vinco & Marci Simone

The young Italian bass Marco Vinco from Verona is known throughout the world for his vivid and powerful performances. He has rapidly established an international career, performing regulary on some of the world's most prestigious concert stages and opera houses: ROH Covent Garden in London, Opéra national in Paris, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real in Madrid, Liceu in Barcelona, Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Salzburg Festival, Edinburgh Festival, etc, etc. In the 2013–14 season he made his company debut with New National Theatre of Tokyo as Mozart's Figaro.

Marco Vinco was born in Verona in 1977. He obtained his law degree in 2002, and in the meantime he studied singing with Ivo Vinco, graduating with full marks at the Lucio Campiani conservatory of Mantua.

Francesco Sanvitale, one of the most important specialists on Tosti’s music, writes:

“Francesco Paolo Tosti had the great merit of redeeming the operatic mortgage that lay on the Italian romance. In Tosti’s romances, the exuberance of the Italian vocal style is combined with simplicity of the melodic line, which perfectly adheres to the poetic text and thus makes for a brilliant balance, in which there is no place for preciosity and which is unburdened by any useless inessentials.”

Anna Leese (soprano) & Stephen De Pledge (piano)

Anna Leese and Stephen de Pledge perform Italian Love Songs by Bellini, Puccini, Donizetti and Tosti. These elegant pieces for solo voice, some well known, others less so, connect directly with a rich and substantial body of Italian art songs, romanze and liriche da camera, composed over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

New Zealand Soprano Anna Leese is a graduate of the University of Otago, the Royal College of Music and the Benjamin Britten International Opera School. Her many awards include the 2005 Richard Tauber Prize and she was recently named as an Arts Foundation New Generation Artist in New Zealand. Her roles for 2012/13 include Leila in Pearlfishers for Opera Holland Park (June), Majenka (The Bartered Bride) and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) (August) for the New Zealand Opera, and concerts with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. As part of the acclaimed Prince Consort she will perform at Wigmore Hall in three concerts during 2013 (February, April, July), as part of their American Song Series.

New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge maintains a diverse and wide-ranging performing schedule, as soloist, chamber musician and song accompanist. He has already recorded a solo recital disc for Champs Hill Records.

“Correctly pronounced though her Italian always is, it lacks any true Italianate flavour...On the upside, she possess impeccable intonation and her pure, true soprano moves around the notes with skill and style. Stephen De Pledge playing is all present and correct.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2013 ***

“a gleaming soprano, like a pure beam of light...everything here is luminescent, like the sun at its radiant midday height...Leese sings [the Bellini] with a fine legato and just enough attention to the words...in her Tosti group she goes further, finding some tender colours in her voice.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2013

The late 19th Century was the heyday of the drawing-room ballad, when families and friends entertained each other with a wide range of songs. Sir Paolo Tosti was one of the most successful composers of such music, alongside his contemporaries Pietro Mascagni and Stefano Donaudy.
