| | | John Rutter - The Ultimate Collection
John Rutter is probably the world's favourite choral composer, and over the course of his long career has created some of the most popular and often performed pieces for vocal ensemble. All 22 tracks on this collection performed by The Cambridge Singers, the choir which Rutter founded back in 1981, the tracks range from the joyous "Shepherd's pipe carol" of 1966 to the 1995 setting of Philip Sidney's poem "My true love hath my hear" from Birthday Madrigals. The disc opens with one of Rutter's best-known works, the timeless "For the beauty of the earth" and also includes his settings of Psalm 23 and "All things bright and beautiful"--popular with choirs and audiences alike--as well as two movements each from his Magnificat and Requiem. Most tracks are accompanied by the City of London Orchestra, breathing new life into works which are often heard only with piano accompaniment. | | | Rutter: Requiem and other choral works
“Here is music finely crafted, written with love for the art and an especial care for choral sound. It's melodious without being commonplace, harmonically rich without being sticky, modern in the graceful way of a child who grows up responsive to newness but not wanting to kick his elders in the teeth. He gives us the heart's desire. But he's on too familiar terms with our heart's desires, he doesn't extend them, or surprise us into realising that they were deeper and subtler than we thought. This is by way of cautiously savouring a remembered taste, which could readily be indulged without perceived need for an interval: one item leads to another and before we know it the pleasurable hour is over. The Requiem is the longest work; the other pieces vary from two to just over six minutes. Most are unaccompanied and show the choir of 25 voices as another of those expert groups of assured and gifted professionals that are among the principal adornments of modern musical life. Their capacity as a virtuoso choir is tested in the Cantate Domino and Choral Fanfare, but Rutter writes for real singers (not just singer-musicians) and their tone is unfailingly beautiful. The two soloists are excellent.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

The Choir of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, Timothy Byram-Wigfield The Choir of St George's Chapel,Windsor Castle offers a sumptuous programme of jewels from the anthem tradition whose repertoire spans five centuries. Under the luminous direction of Timothy Byram-Wigfield, and in the luxurious resonance of St George's Chapel, the choir resounds with exhilarating energy. This recording is dedicated to all those who lost their lives on 11 September, 2001.The proceeds from this track will be donated to the British Memorial Garden Trust Inc. www.britishmemorialgarden.org “There are many choral groups performing cathedral music on CD and in the concert hall, but no matter how polished their singing nothing quite matches the experience of hearing our greatest church choirs singing their own repertoire on their own territory. So it is with this splendid CD: surely the
next best thing to being present in the sumptuous surroundings of St George’s
Chapel, Windsor Castle.” Organists Review “demonstrates the choir's versatility …their freshness is an asset, and the extremes of expression … are beautifully caught” Gramophone Magazine “…the choir, most atmospherically recorded in the Chapel, demonstrates its current health, with the trebles in particular wonderfully bright.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2006 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
