Charlie Siem (violin) & Caroline Jaya-Ratnam (piano)

Stunning debut disc on Warner violinist Classics & Jazz by young English Charlie Siem.

Recorded: Wyastone Concert Hall, Monmouth

Dates: July 26th and 27th 2010

“It's clear that Charlie Siem enjoys playing these pieces and there's no feeling of struggle as he steps up to their various virtuoso challenges...Siem's appearance of having a good time is shared by Caroline Jaya-Ratnam, who is not only a sympathetic accompanist but is ready, at the right moment, to take a share of the limelight.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2011

“I like the touch of melancholy he finds in Sarasate's gypsy tunes. The Bazzini is spectacular: ricochets, left-hand pizzicati, stratospheric harmonics and all...Waxman's famous Heifetz-inspired Carmen Fantasie, with its fine mix of lyricism and finger-twisting, is lovingly done here, and perhaps the track to which I am most likely to return.” International Record Review, March 2011

Ruggiero Ricci is in his element in these virtuoso concertos and showpieces, with both, the Tchaikovsky Concerto (with Sargent) and Scherzo and the Sibelius Violin Concerto being released internationally on CD for the first time. The perceptive booklet notes by Tully Potter include a biography of Ricci and (sometimes wry!) comments by the violinist himself on the recordings, and some fascinating detail on the first movement cadenza of the Khachaturian. All the recordings were made in a five-year period from 1956 (Khachaturian) to 1961 (Tchaikovsky).

“He has the clean, clear-cut and effortless technique that is a prime necessity for [the Sibelius] concerto. The reading is straightforward, with no lack of intensity...Ricci is especially impressive in the Finale [of the Tchaikovsky], where the soloist's brilliance comes into its own - inspiring an electricity in Sargent's conducting which was often lacking in his studio recordings.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition

Tianwa Yang (violin)

Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, Ernest Martínez Izquierdo

This disc is her first volume of the Spanish virtuoso-composer’s music for violin and orchestra, a delightful survey of some of his most bewitching and demanding creations.

Albert Spalding’s description of Sarasate’s playing could well apply to Tianwa Yang’s interpretations: ‘His violin sang like a thrush, and his incomparable ease tossed aside difficulties’.
