English Chamber Orchestra, Richard Bonynge

Sung in English by an impressive cast, the rarely recorded operettas The Czarevitch and The Land of Smiles are sure to delight. The music of Franz Lehar under the direction of Richard Bonynge is a perfect match. Bonynge delights in rediscovering neglected masterpieces and bringing them to the fore. These works are well known for their demanding tenor roles. On these recordings, Jerry Hadley handles the roles with style and ease.

“Jerry Hadley is a fine singing actor, but he is also a superb tenor who brings out the full romantic appeal of the big Act 2 aria. As Lisa, Nancy Gustafson applies her clear soprano to Lehar’s exquisite vocal writing, and her duet with Hadley, “Ah, who has given us our dream come true?”, shows the pair to perfection. In the buffo numbers, Naomi Itami and Lynton Atkinson provide the necessary contrast…. “ Gramophone
