Kristian Bezuidenhout [fortepiano Paul McNulty, Divisov, Czech Republic, 2009, after Anton Walter & Sohn, Vienna, 1805] From the collection of Alexander Skeaping A=430

On volume four of his widely acclaimed traversal of Mozart's music for solo keyboard, fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout performs on an instrument by Paul McNulty, modeled on a Viennese original by Anton Walter & Sohn (c.1805). The program includes Piano Sonatas in D major K.311 and G major K.283 and the lovely Variations on 'Je suis Lindor' in E flat Major, K.354. As with the other volumes in this exceptional series, Bezuidenhout brings out colors and shadings in these works that are only possible when performed on a fortepiano.

“the sound he produces is a constant pleasure. There is nothing remotely prissy or limited about these brilliant, forceful performances, in which even the most apparently routine passagework is alive with expression and meaning...everything is fresh and vivid. Minor Mozart, but not when played like this.” Sunday Times, 13th January 2013

“this is undoubtedly another impressive instalment in Bezuidenhuit's Mozart cycle, with a particularly fine account of the C major Prelude and Fugue K394, and an individual approach to the unconventional set of variations on Je suis Lindor, K354...All in all, a rewarding disc.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 ****

“Few players coax as much depth and detail from the fortepiano as this … [Bezuidenhout's] enviably high standard’s maintained” CD Review, 5th January 2013

In diesen heil'gen Hallen (from Die Zauberflöte)

arranged by Friedrich Gulda

János Darvas (video director)

“Friedrich Gulda belongs to the irrational sort, whose threatening extinction is a great loss to the world” (Manfred Gräter, WDR). After years of virtual abstinence from the classical music business – Gulda cursed at its protagonists being “scheißreaktionäre Künstlerlemuren“ (reactionary monkeys) – the lateral thinker returned to the concert stage in 1981. This recital from the Amerikahaus in Munich, which he combined with concerts in Milan and Paris, features Friedrich Gulda in a black sweatshirt, playing works by his personal favourite Mozart – in a version specially for purists. Gulda presents his crystal-clear interpretations of the sonatas with his personally unique spirit and his indisputable virtuosity and musical tactfulness. His live-presence is, as always, a guarantor for a marvellous piano experience: a successful return of an “irrational” musical genius to his roots.

Tomasello Gabriele (piano)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote 18 piano sonatas, completed works, whose authenticity has been asserted. Although classical in terms of compositional means, they point to emotionally infused masterpieces of the Romanticism as far as their expressive factor is concerned. Also formally Mozart afforded himself to slightly deviate from the classical sonata pattern, as each piano sonata he penned is made of three movements instead of four. The Sonata no 5 in G major KV 283 perfectly pictures the joyful state Mozart was in when he was planning to leave Salzburg forever and launch a worldwide career. The Sonata no 7 in C major KV 309, on the other hand, was written when he was in love. Its outer movements are proof of his improvisatory genius, just like the Fantasia in D minor KV 397. The Sonata no 11 in A major KV 331 is, in turn, one of Mozart's most famous masterpieces, with its Andante with variations instead of the first movement and the famous Rondo alla Turca as the third movement. Finally, the Sonata no 17 in B flat major KV 570, a mature work, which Alfred Einstein called "the ideal of the Mozart sonata", crowns the recording.
