Fantasia in D minor, K397

Eight of Mozart’s divinely inspired Piano Sonatas here receive performances of mercurial inspiration from consummate-musician cum virtuoso-wizard Marc-André Hamelin. His four Haydn albums have enthralled—this new Mozart will not disappoint. Two Rondos, a Fantasia, and a decidedly quirky Gigue complete a delight of a double album.

“His extreme refinement of phrase and dynamics, his endlessly fresh approach to detail and breadth of line can be taken for granted: the first item, the late D major Sonata No. 18 has rarely burst off the page so full of vivacity and muscular energy....It's in slow movements...that a quality of alien sophistication...tends to interpose itself.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2015 ****

“Hamelin is never dull. He may not touch the heart through a perfect blend of control and insight, of pulse and flexibility, but his capacity for brilliance, for beauty of sound, and his flawless technical address can amount to pleasures in themselves.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2015

Kristian Bezuidenhout [fortepiano Paul McNulty, Divisov, Czech Republic, 2009, after Anton Walter & Sohn, Vienna, 1805] From the collection of Alexander Skeaping A=430

On volume four of his widely acclaimed traversal of Mozart's music for solo keyboard, fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout performs on an instrument by Paul McNulty, modeled on a Viennese original by Anton Walter & Sohn (c.1805). The program includes Piano Sonatas in D major K.311 and G major K.283 and the lovely Variations on 'Je suis Lindor' in E flat Major, K.354. As with the other volumes in this exceptional series, Bezuidenhout brings out colors and shadings in these works that are only possible when performed on a fortepiano.

“the sound he produces is a constant pleasure. There is nothing remotely prissy or limited about these brilliant, forceful performances, in which even the most apparently routine passagework is alive with expression and meaning...everything is fresh and vivid. Minor Mozart, but not when played like this.” Sunday Times, 13th January 2013

“this is undoubtedly another impressive instalment in Bezuidenhuit's Mozart cycle, with a particularly fine account of the C major Prelude and Fugue K394, and an individual approach to the unconventional set of variations on Je suis Lindor, K354...All in all, a rewarding disc.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 ****

“Few players coax as much depth and detail from the fortepiano as this … [Bezuidenhout's] enviably high standard’s maintained” CD Review, 5th January 2013

”Evidence of fingers exceptionally vigorous, nimble and purposeful." BBC Music Magazine

“He plays with a light, sparkling touch and singing melodies, with tasteful and unexaggerated expression." Fanfare

For more than ten years Gottlieb Wallisch has captivated audiences from many of the world’s major concert platforms with his playing. Wallisch’s debut on Linn Records, ‘Mozart in Vienna’, features a selection of Mozart’s best-loved works, all composed in Vienna during one of the composer’s most fruitful periods: 1781-1791.

Wallisch expertly demonstrates Mozart’s quintessential style: his skill at improvisation (Fantasie KV 397), his humour (Variationen KV 455) and his more intimate, melancholic side (Rondo KV 511).

Two of Mozart’s finest sonatas are also included and they allow Gottlieb to display his deep understanding of the music of his fellow Austrian, as well as his impressive technical and interpretative skills.

The Viennese pianist has performed this repertoire internationally to great acclaim: “Wallisch proved himself to be an exceptional performer of Mozart” (Neue Ruhr Zeitung).

Recorded in St George’s, Bristol, which is regarded as one of the best chamber venues in Britain, Gottlieb gives a stylish and individual performance of some of Mozart’s finest piano works.

Born into a family of Viennese musicians, Gottlieb Wallisch is a competition prizewinner and a respected artist in the Viennese piano tradition.

Gottlieb Wallisch has performed with many leading orchestras including Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has performed at prestigious London venues Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Gottlieb participated in the international cycle "Rising Stars" and gave solo recitals in many European capitals as well as New York’s Carnegie Hall.

“Wallisch is in many ways a highly attractive Mozartian, commanding a beautiful (if rather opaque) tone, a discerning sense of proportion and a keen but discreet articulation, all complemented by a suitably graceful formality.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2010 ***

“From the first notes of the theme [of K455], one sense that Wallisch feels strongly about the music, and each variation is beautifully characterized. high drama and virtuosity vie with some lovely expressive moments, the cadenza sections are exciting and the final accelerando - an original touch - is highly convincing” International Record Review, October 2010

Vanessa Wagner (Brodmann piano 1814, Yamaha piano)

Ever since her first Mozart disc in 2000, the French pianist Vanessa Wagner has wanted to make another recording of his music. Her ‘encounter’ with Clementi stimulated her to do so and to bring together on a single disc these two composers who have so often been compared. Since 2008 she has also played the fortepiano in concert which has opened a new door in her musical itinerary. She enjoys the technique it calls for, the attitude required of the musician confronted with these fragile instruments, the intimate sound it produces, the nostalgic charm it exudes. To alternate between instruments seemed natural to her, and she now does so as often as possible in concert. Vanessa Wagner has always tried to create her own career path, a trajectory that seems natural, free and coherent to her. This disc exemplifies her approach.

"When he is at his best he plays more beautifully than any of us," Alfred Brendel

Wilhelm Walter Friedrich Kempff (1895–1991) was a major German pianist and composer. Although his repertoire included Bach, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Brahms, he was particularly well known for his interpretations of the music of Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. His Mozart was also memorable as demonstrated on this well-filled Praga Digitals CD of performances from 1960-62.

Christoph Berner (fortepiano Streicher)

These songs by Mozart accompanied the events of his life like illustrations in a picture-book: from the departure of a close friend to a meeting of his Masonic Lodge. After their highly personal exploration of the Romantic lied, Werner Güra and Christoph Berner now turn to a less well-known repertoire with this selection of vocal and instrumental works.
