This latest addition to Christopher Herrick’s acclaimed Buxtehude catalogue is performed on the magnificent Organ of Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge. Everything heard on this disc was composed over three-hundred years ago when printed music was a rarity and organists were required to be highly proficient in the art of improvisation. Certainly none of Buxtehude’s organ works was printed in his lifetime, and it was not until 1875 that they first became available. Herrick’s communication is exceptional in these stimulating performances and his inspired interpretations are so vivid that they appear improvisatory in their approach. “An unforced manner is essential for this oqpaue and, at times, fragile music...Registrations are beautifully balanced throughout, and the pleno, while thrilling, isn't overbearing...There is fizz and sparkle in all the right places and just enough warmth in the bass...This is shapely playing, with a touch of humour, especially in the spirghtly jigs. A thoroughly enjoyable production, with the customary excellent documentation.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Bach and The North German Tradition I
Martin Neu (Ahrend-Organ, Herzogenaurach) In his youth, J.S. Bach came across two North German musicians who considerably influenced him: Georg Böhm and Buxtehude. Their stylistic influence on Bach can be seen clearly in his early works. This SACD demonstrates the musical connection in a selection of pieces. Formal parallels and harmonic borrowings made by Bach from the North German masters become apparent. In this recording, Martin Neu plays the Ahrend organ in Herzogenaurach. The organ builder Jürgen Ahrend from Leer, North Germany is reckoned to be one of the leading organ builders and restorers, and who has gained an international reputation particularly for his consistent restoration work and his great artistry in voicing. The Ahrend organ in Herzogenaurach was built by his son Hendrik Ahrend who continues the tradition of Ahrend organs. “the most pleasurable highlights are the three delightful pieces by Georg Böhm...usually played on the harpsichord, Böhm's Capriccio in D sounds quite at ease on the organ...Although this new Bavarian organ has a modest specification on paper, such is the variety of its timbral beauty that the ear never tires.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Ton Koopman (the Wilde/Schnittger organ (1599/1682), St. Jacob’s Church, Lüdingworth, Germany) “In his excellent notes Koopman explains that Buxtehude needs a "macho" playing style and this works well as a stylus fantasticus in the virtuoso large-scale works. His interpretations are full of creative flourishes and embellishments…” Gramophone Magazine, October 2007 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

“Faultless registration and tempi; fluidity of rhythm and her ability to make the instrument sing out into the acoustic of the building are becoming hallmarks of this series. These qualities make her playing of the Choral Preludes particularly effective; a perfect balance of the melody against its contrasting accompaniment.” Andrew McGregor, bbc.co.uk, 10th October 2005 “The chorale preludes "sing" with greater clarity, while the often wild freestyle nature of the four Praeludia…here sound more texturally detailed and chromatically varied. Her stirring conclusion to the first Praeludium in G minor is particularly ravishing.” Classics Today | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
