As harpsichordist, conductor, and musical director of the ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, Christophe Rousset is one of the finest interpreters of Baroque music. His first recording for Aparté, devoted to Louis Couperin, was received most enthusiastically by public and critics alike, and collected many distinctions in the international press including BBC Music Magazine Instrumental Choice. Now at the peak of his maturity, the artist presents an original programme, Bach Fantasy, in which he treats us to little-known works but also standards by the great J.S. Bach. Apart from the important sets of works, including the Goldberg Variations, the Well-Tempered Clavier, the keyboard Suites and Partitas, many miscellaneous pieces by Bach have come down to us in the hand of his pupils and admirers: early essays, pieces of a didactic nature, evocations of emotions, and sometimes all of the above. Christophe Rousset plays these pieces on the 1632 Ruckers harpsichord of Neuchâtel, one of the finest in the world. “Christophe Rousset's new album, Bach Fantasy, reveals the freedom, vigour and improvisatory bravura of Bach's genius through a miscellany of pieces less frequently aired than his canonical keyboard works...Rousset captures the emotional extremes of the teenage composer...[there's] a real sense of live performance - one that, literally and figuratively, pulls out all the stops.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2011 ***** “Stylistically and tonally, the variety is dazzling.” The Independent, 23rd January 2011 “Fantasy is the right word for a harpsichord recital superbly played on an instrument built in 1632 and amended a century later. It’s a feisty creature that has warmth and character...Rousset’s mastery is total; every thread of counterpoint dances, crystal-clear, before us. A delightful disc.” The Times, 7th January 2011 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Violaine Cochard (harpsichord) "This recording is the result of "love at first sight" – mine for this wonderful Dulcken harpsichord! I have been fortunate in having had opportunity to play the instrument on several occasions, each time with the same emotion. Following my fancy, I played pieces that particularly appeal to me emotionally, most of them written by that great man of genius, Johann Sebastian Bach, since the qualities of this extraordinary instrument are so perfectly attuned to his music, combining brilliance and refinement, power and interiority. I have tried to create a programme that is both diverse and coherent, including various writing processes and genres of which Bach particularly found, such as traditional counterpoint, the fantasia and dances. The dances I have chosen have been isolated from their suites so that we may hear them differently and see them in a new light, in a different context, thus also highlighting their specificities. In the same spirit, I have also removed other pieces from their usual contexts. In the end the programme offers a contrast in forms, effects and atmospheres, like a concert; but there is unity in the perfect entente between the music and this exceptional instrument by Dulcken." This double-CD release offers some rare recordings (especially the Praeludien mit Fughetten on CD 2) played by one of Italy’s most talented and acclaimed pianists. “Bacchetti’s style is unconventional but never iconoclastic . . . It marries a profound musical instinct with a keen and well-informed intellect, and an approach to the instrument . . . Which makes many of his colleagues seem like crude beginners. . . . He may thus never have the career he so richly deserves, but deserve it he most emphatically does” Piano Magazine “Andrea Bacchetti is a pianist at home across the whole extent of the piano literature, with his Bach playing well able to rank alongside the finest present-day exponents” International Piano, September/October 2009 “Beautiful atmosphere and legato playing are again aspects of Bacchetti’s playing which bring me back every time” Donny Clements, MusicWeb International, September 2009 “More than two-and-a-half hours of Bach's solo keyboard music, sensitively played by Andrea Bacchetti…” Classic FM Magazine “Andrea Bacchetti's playing of Bach is fluid, fluent, flexible and mellifluous” International Record Review, September 2009 “All fascinating stuff, impeccably recorded and a most enjoyable release” American Record Guide, October 2009 “Bacchetti allows his luminous sonority to soar without pressure or fuss” Gramophone Magazine, October 2009 “Intensely personal, musically discriminating at a very high level, highly sophisticated pianistically” Piano, September 2009 “[Bacchetti] plays them with spontaneous freshness and plenty of expressive life, and these two discs make very appealing listening.” Penguin Guide “There are some very fine Bach keyboard players around, but I find his highly individual style uniquely enjoyable and uplifting. Bacchetti's way of playing is hard to characterise, and impossible to in a single word. He is supremely concerned to articulate every voice, but that doesn't mean that his playing is didactic” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 ***** BBC Music Magazine

Given the stature of Italian music in the Baroque era, it is not surprising to find a vein of Italian musical style running through the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The young Bach took the latest styles and clichés from Vivaldi and Albinoni and studied the music of Frescobaldi and Corelli for counterpoint and structure. Many of the forms in which he worked – including the fantasia, aria, toccata and fugue – were transplanted from Italy during the seventeenth century to find new roots north of the Alps. The pieces recorded here span Bach’s entire working life and show how these stock ideas profoundly influenced all the genres in which he worked. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
