| | | Karel Sejna: Great Czech Conductors
Rarely mentioned in the same breath as his illustrious colleagues Talich, Kubelík and Ančerl, Karel Šejna (1896-1982) was perennially second-in-command, yet despite failing to receive the credit he deserves he too played a crucial role in shaping the history of the Czech Philharmonic. Initially solo double-bass of the orchestra, he began conducting upon Václav Talich’s request and in 1939 was officially named its second conductor. And he also remained deputy after the departure of Talich, who was replaced by Rafael Kubelík, as well as after Kubelík’s emigration, when Karel Ančerl was appointed (originally against the orchestra members’ will) to the vacant post of chief conductor. Consequently, still playing “second fiddle”, Šejna went on to conduct dozens of concerts and make numerous recordings, which today rank among the finest in the Supraphon archives. Period critics branded him a flexible and vivid conductor who always required an understanding of the style and consistently worked with detail. In 1972, Šejna rounded off a half-century of work for the Czech Philharmonic with Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Šejna’s sensitively remastered recordings from 1950-1962, from the bracing Mozart played “with a light hand” to Mahler’s fourth, are now released by Supraphon for the first time on CD. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mozart - Arias for Male Soprano
The highly-rated early music ensemble Boston Baroque and its conductor Martin Pearlman join forces with the talented American singer and true male soprano Michael Maniaci, in a recording of arias that Mozart originally composed for the castrato voice. The disc contains arias from Idomeneo, Lucio Silla, and La Clemenza di Tito, as well as the beloved motet Exsultate, jubilate. The recording also includes two brilliant orchestral pieces, the overtures to Idomeneo and Clemenza. The first permanent Baroque orchestra established in North America, Boston Baroque is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier period-instrument bands. The ensemble's performances and recordings of the Baroque and Classical repertoire have been hailed by audiences and critics in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia for their freshness, virtuosity, and exuberant appeal. Although Maniaci’s voice is natural, his stunning performances give Boston Baroque the opportunity to add yet another “original” instrument, the male soprano voice, to their performing forces. A voice type that was enormously popular in opera and religious music in the 17th century but completely disappeared over a century ago, the male castrato’s true chest voice – unlike falsetto singers – was in the soprano or alto range, yet extremely powerful due to the male lung capacity. Up until now, all we have really known of this voice are the verbal descriptions of contemporary listeners and a single, scratchy recording made late in the life of the last castrato performer. “each comes across fully formed, assured in recitative, rhythmically alert, skilful in phrasing...a distinctive musical personality is evident throughout, supporting by first-rate 'period' accompaniment.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2010 *** “Maniaci’s voice is truly extraordinary. Its range is about a sixth higher than that of most countertenors, and high C presents no problem...The arias...are all delivered with assurance, their testing passages of coloratura negotiated with disarming ease” Sunday Times, 28th February 2010 *** “This is quite an unsettling recording. It's as though we have opened a door on another world...It's probably the nearest we have to the sound of the castrato voice...the voice is effortless, with no hint of a break into falsetto” The Observer, 28th March 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Andrew Kennedy sings Arias By Gluck, Mozart & Berlioz
Andrew Kennedy has established himself as one of the best and brightest young tenors performing today; as a leading exponent of song (winning the song prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2005), and by performing regularly in opera houses around the world. This new recital disc contains a sumptuous selection of arias by Gluck, Mozart and Berlioz, and is accompanied by London’s Southbank Sinfonia, conducted by Simon Over. “Andrew Kennedy’s attractive collection avoids the obvious...Kennedy’s bright, firm tenor is equal to the demands of Gluck’s haute-contre parts...Simon Over and the Southbank Sinfonia are crystal-clear accompanists” Sunday Times, 21st February 2010 *** “His voice has grown in strength, well beyond the stereotypical 'English tenor' bleat...he has acquired a clarion ring at the top that equips him for Tamino, and bravura roles like Gluck's Achilles. Indeed he's mastered the Gluck style convincingly, bringing out the expressiveness within the classical frame” BBC Music Magazine, May 2010 **** “It is virtuoso territory and beset with challenges, ably met by Andrew Kennedy, who on the whole is well suited to the repertoire...Kennedy's voice...is always clear in definition and often, as in Pylades' aria and Tito's three solos, gracefully poised. And it is good to hear him in an operatic recital for a change.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Naïve continues its collaboration with renowned conductor, Rinaldo Alessandrini, which sees him lead the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra in an exciting release featuring the overtures from Mozart’s greatest operas. This is in fact Alessandrini’s first recording with an orchestra playing on modern instruments and resulted from Alessandrini’s position as Principal Guest conductor of the Norwegian National Opera that he’s held since 2005. He chose this repertoire as during his years in this position, it was the sublime music of Mozart that the Orchestra responded to best. A virtuoso on the harpsichord, organ and fortepiano, and the founder and conductor of Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini is considered a major force in today’s international early music scene. He and his group have created new standards of excellence in the performance of 17th and 18th century Italian vocal music. Alessandrini’s desire to re-conquer the long-neglected madrigal repertory of the early seventeenth century led to the founding of the Concerto Italiano vocal ensemble. Norwegian National Opera Orchestra is one of Northern Europe’s oldest orchestras, dating back to 1827. “…Rinaldo Allessandrini… has an innate understanding of Mozart's conception of "sonata form" as concentrated drama. He also has an uncanny ear for sonority. Alessandrini makes the brass an integral part of the woodwind choir: hear how beautifully they are incorporated into the wind chords in The Magic Flute - just one of the vivid and thought-provoking details that make this such a delightful disc.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2009 | | | (also available to download from $11.00) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days.
