Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Tugan Sokhiev

CD+DVD.

The fifth recording of Tugan Sokhiev and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse on naïve is dedicated to one of the major music works of the 20th century, Stravinsky’s 'Rite of Spring', which will turn 100 years in 2013.

Also featuring the 'The Firebird' and offering illustrations that enhance the special atmosphere of those works, this set includes a bonus DVD with a live performance of 'Rite of Spring' from the unforgettable concert that opened last season for the orchestra, now considered one of the best French ensembles.

Tugan Sokhiev’s career is moving ahead fast. Besides his activity as Music Director at Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, with whom he will tour Japan, Germany, Austria, Poland and China this season, he is now Music Director at Deutsches Symphonie Orchestra in Berlin and guest conductor of several prestigious orchestras, including the Philharmonia to which he returns each season. He also enjoys a close association with the Mariinsky Theatre and is in demand from orchestras and opera houses worldwide.

The relationship between Sokhiev and his musicians in Toulouse is increasingly celebrated - Le Figaro described the partnership as "at the centre of French musical life", while Le Monde wrote of “Sokhievmania” after a recent performance in Paris.

“It's The Firebird that takes the honours here, especially the marvellously descriptive woodwind allied to the tiptoeing pizzicato strings. Here, Sokhiev seems to have penetrated to the fantastic, mythical heart of the piece.” The Independent, 12th January 2013 ***

“These are broad, big-boned accounts; if the Rite’s final chord isn’t cataclysmic, what goes before is convulsive and compelling.” Sunday Times, 20th January 2013

“Sokhiev's Rite of Spring takes heed of the work's many textural contrasts, with plenty of bite and bounce from the strings in the 'Mystical Circles of the Young Girls' and darkly wailing lower strings in 'Spring Rounds'...I'd call it a driven performance rather than especially elemental” Gramophone Magazine, February 2013

“Sokhiev's new recording with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse seems aimed at younger listeners, and would form a fine starting point for school projects...there's a DVD of the performance of The Rite of Spring that focuses on whichever instrument is prominent at any given time, and films Sokhiev from the relevant player's viewpoint, giving a real sense of what it's like to be in an orchestra.” The Guardian, 7th February 2013 ****

“As for the performances, these are polished and duly exciting...as an imaginative introduction to the world of the ballets, this is a welcome set.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 ****

Following the success of their recordings of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Petrushka, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Litton here perform The Firebird.

The Firebird was Igor Stravinsky’s first full-length ballet, but not his first collaboration with Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes – he orchestrated two piano compositions by Chopin (also featured on this disc) for use in another project.

Andrew Litton here conducts the original ballet score.

The disc also includes arrangements of pieces by Tchaikovsky and Sibelius, ending with Stravinsky’s tongue-in-cheek 1955 Greeting Prelude for the 80th birthday of Pierre Monteux.

The Bergen Philharmonic’s disc featuring The Rite of Spring and Petrushka was met with critical acclaim – short-listed for a 2011 Gramophone Award, named Editor’s Choice in Classic FM Magazine.

“The playing on this disc from Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic is in many ways marvellous, with a good sense of pace throughout much of the ballet. Recorded sound is sensational, especially in surround...The caveat, though, is that...there is much excellent music-making but not such convincing drama.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 ***

“Litton allows [The Firebird] more delicacy than some of its later interpreters, to its great advantage in such moments as the very opening...If Kashchey has sounded more formidable in the hands of others (including the composer himself), Litton gives the old sorcerer a spectral quality that is at least as sinister. It is all beautifully played, not least thanks to a woodwind section of players who really listen to one another.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2012

“the fine grain of the recording ensures that nothing in this remarkable score is missed; the Bergen orchestra really is a very fine ensemble these days. Yet too often it's hard to believe that this is a work that was intended for the theatre” The Guardian, 29th March 2012 ***

Ansermet rehearses The Firebird

Stravinsky:

The Firebird

Stravinsky and Ansermet were synonymous. The two met in 1913, their working friendship blossomed, and in 1915, on Stravinsky’s recommendation, Ansermet became Diaghilev’s principal conductor. This meant that Ansermet was in frequent contact with the composer’s ballet scores and also gave the first performances of a number of them. He recorded The Firebird on several occasions, in both mono and stereo, and this recording, made not with ‘his’ Suisse Romande Orchestra but with the New Philharmonia, on 26 and 29 November 1968. He was then 85 years old. Less than three months later, on 20 February 1969, following a series of mild heart attacks, he passed away. Full of light and shade, supremely enchanting, but devoid of any sentimental varnish, this is a recording of The Firebird to be treasured and it was issued, following Ansermet’s death, as a 2LP set, the second LP made up of excerpts from the rehearsal pertaining to the recording. Following its CD reissue in Decca’s Classic Sound series, it now reappears on CD and will be warmly welcomed by many collectors.

“Recorded three months before his death, Ansermet's sharply focused if rather deliberate Firebird reflects, as a 50-minute bonus rehearsal confirms, his acute ear and commitment to rhythm and colour.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 ****

“the sheer beauty of sound is a delight throughout, not just the subtlety and precision of the orchestral playing (which includes some very fine solo work) but the unexaggerated clarity of detail, the wholly natural and credible perspective and the finely-judged dynamic shadings … All these qualities are enhanced by the CD recording, which adds a degree of directness without damaging the spaciousness of the sound. Not the least virtue of Ansermet’s approach is the readiness with which it evokes dance. His interpretation still earns its place in the catalogue” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012 ****

“The recording is of vintage Decca quality and remains demonstration-worthy on disc” Penguin Guide ***

Les Orientales

ballet by Arensky, Glazunov, Grieg & Sinding

Stravinsky:

The Firebird

After the success of the Paris season of the Ballets Russes in 1909, Serge Diaghilev commissioned Stravinsky for a ballet inspired by the traditional Russian tale, 'The Firebird'. On 18 May 1910, the score was completed and on 25 June of the same year, the ballet was performed to great acclaim at the Opéra de Paris.

Thanks to his bewitching composition, Rimsky-Korsakov’s young pupil, then aged 27, was cast into the spotlight of the international music scene. In 19 scenes, the ballet tells the story of Ivan Tsarevich, the young prince who sets out in search of the firebird and ends up captive in the enchanted garden of Kashchei the Immortal… Deploying string and wind instruments crafted in French workshops, gut strings, and a playing style straight out of Conservatoire de Paris master classes, the Ballets Russes orchestra was, above all, a French affair.

A century later, Les Siècles and François-Xavier Roth have reconstituted the orchestra which accompanied the Ballets Russes in 1910, and, assisted by the musicologist François Dru, they have also reconstructed 'Les Orientales', which was first performed 25 June 1910 as a prelude to 'The Firebird'.

This composite ballet combines various different works from the 19th century, with in particular, compositions by Glazunov, Sinding, Arensky and Grieg. The orchestrations of 'Djinn' by Grieg and 'Danse Orientale' by Sinding have been created, respectively by Bruno Mantovani and Charlie Piper.

“This is fabulous: young French musicians performing Stravinsky’s ballet on period instruments similar to those used by the Ballets Russes orchestra at the 1910 premiere in Paris. But it’s no dusty academic exercise. Under François-Xavier, Roth’s scintillating direction the playing is breathtakingly virtuosic and the timbres produced by the narrow-bore brass and antique woodwinds is entrancing.” The Times, 15th October 2011 *****

“An intriguing concept recreates the 1910 premiere concert of arguably Stravinsky's first masterpiece, with crack period band Les Siecles sounding especially vivid.” Classical Music, 22nd October 2011 ***

“It all works brilliantly – perhaps the most entertaining 20 minutes of orchestral music I’ve heard all year...The lean, transparent sound [in The Firebird] is a real plus – linking the work more closely with its two successors, and there’s a suppleness and flexibility to Roth’s direction which is effortlessly matched by his players.” The Arts Desk, 22nd October 2011

“This is a fascinating recording...The Firebird is the undoubted star of this show, and its orchestral plumage is subtly different here from other performances. Surprisingly, perhaps, this is more apparent with the strings than the wind, even though the timbre of the latter is distinctive...Roth drives the music with a sure touch for dramatic pacing to ensure that it's more magical Firebird than undercooked turkey.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 *****

“This is no ordinary recording of a well-worn Stravinsky masterpiece...The playing is electrifying and visceral, capturing the steely brilliance of the score – flashes of colour and an energy that had me sitting excitedly on the edge of my seat.” The Scotsman, 24th October 2011 *****

“The pairing is a first on disc, and only serves to emphasise the astounding originality of Stravinsky’s music...Les Siècles are exhilaratingly virtuosic in action pieces such as the capture of the Firebird by Tsarevich Ivan. There are more rhythmically incisive modern-instrument accounts of the Infernal Dance, but Roth’s works brilliantly in context. There is much that is revelatory here.” Sunday Times, 30th October 2011

“[Les Orientales] is played here with suitable flamboyance...an excellently played, brightly recorded performance of the ballet, conducted with verve by Francois-Xavier Roth. Certainly the orchestra has a clarity which gives a well-lit quality to Stravinsky's Rimsky-Korsakovian orchestration, his model, and there is no lack of vitality wioth movements such as Kaschey's dance. Well worth hearing.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011

Maazel conducts Stravinsky

Maazel conducts Stravinsky

Single release of the 60th anniversary-box

Stravinsky:

The Firebird

Live recording: Munich, Herkulessaal, 17th and 18th June 1999

The Rite of Spring

Live recording: Munich, Philharmonie, 2nd and 3rd April 1998

Under Lorin Maazel, who held the Chief Conductor position from 1993 to 2002, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks reached a new level of performance culture, precision and flexibility. Like no other conductor, Maazel is capable of masterfully handling large-dimensioned works and performing music tightly packed with emotional content clear-headedly to make its effect even greater. The works on this CD mark two key moments in Stravinsky’s development as a composer during the period before the First World War.

The ballet music for L’oiseau de feu (The Firebird) contains many of the attributes that had made the Sacre such a scandalous avant-garde event in the Paris of 1913: unprecedented sound colours, rapidly changing rhythms, orgiastic climaxes and an exotic subject matter. Lorin Maazel and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks – a dream combination for Stravinsky’s sensuous and rhythmically irresistible ballet works.

Individual release from the successful anniversary box of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

Two of Igor Stravinsky’s most popular works.

Highly virtuosic orchestral works in which Maazel’s conducting expertise comes most impressively to the fore.

“Unlike some recordings originally destined for radio broadcast, the sound here is very good indeed. There is clarity and a naturalness (for CD) that conveys both the breadth of the orchestral palette and a sense of occasion. The delicacy of the hushed textures in the opening of Part 2 is magical, and a fitting tribute to the best of Lorin Maazel's work with the orchestra.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2011 ***

Pierre Boulez conducts Stravinsky

Pierre Boulez conducts Stravinsky

Recorded at the Musée du Louvre - Paris, 2 December 2008

Stravinsky:

The Firebird

1910 ballet score

Fireworks, Op. 4

Pierre Boulez is celebrating his 85th anniversary on the 26th March 2010. He is especially famed for his polished interpretations of twentieth century classics in general and Stravinsky in particular. Clarity, precision, rhythmic agility and a respect for the composers' intentions as notated in the musical score are the hallmarks of his conducting style.

This live performance of Stravinsky’s Firebird under the Pyramid of the Louvre Museum was the culminating point of a “Boulez cycle” at the Louvre - a rare and spectacular setting.

Bonus: Boulez’ introduction to Stravinsky’s Firebird with live musical illustrations by the Orchestre de Paris and historical footage. A once in a lifetime opportunity to see music through the eyes of one of our most famous contemporary composers/conductors Pierre Boulez.

“Pierre Boulez is arguably the most influential and controversial figure in the world of music today. Boulez is known as the young Turk of post-war avant-garde composition who has steadily transformed himself into one of the most authoritative interpreters of standard 19th and 20th-century music.” The Guardian

A Russian Night

Rachmaninov:

Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18

Hélène Grimaud (piano)

Stravinsky:

The Firebird

Tchaikovsky:

The Tempest, Op. 18

This is the first-ever concert DVD of Hélène Grimaud capturing her appearance with Claudio Abbado in a fascinating all-Russian concert programme recorded at Lucerne Festival in 2008. Claudio Abbado has invited Hélène for a variety of programmes since they first performed together in the early 90s and this is the first document of their collaboration, about which the Neue Züricher Zeitung wrote: “Grimaud played with naturalness and chamber-musical spirit….a phenomenal orchestra inspired by its charismatic conductor.”

The repertoire of the DVD throws light on various facets of Russian life and music. Two works – Tchaikovsky’s symphonic fantasia inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Stravinsky’s concert suite from the fairytale ballet The Firebird – depict the dramatic struggle between the forces of good and evil and the ultimate triumph of the former. And Hélène Grimaud is the soloist in a performance of one of the beloved classics of the late Romantic repertoire, Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. For Hélène Grimaud, to perform the concerto with Claudio Abbado was “a dream”.

This DVD features behind-the-scenes material shows Hélène Grimaud in conversation and in rehearsal.
