Carolyn Sampson (soprano), Laurence Cummings (harpsichord & spinet), Elizabeth Kenny (archlute / theorbo), Anne-Marie Lasla (bass viol), Sarah Sexton (violin I), Andrea Morris (violin II) & Jane Rogers (viola)

As one of today’s most magic – not to say victorious – singers, whether on the opera stage or in the concert hall, Carolyn Sampson’s previous appearances on BIS have earned her high praise, for instance in American Record Guide (“Her tone is extraordinarily beautiful: natural, warm and unforced, with almost superhuman vocal athleticism”).

Alfred Deller

Wieland Kuijken, William Christie

"The present record contains 13 of Purcell's most celebrated songs, each one of which is sung with intense feeling and, one feels, a familiarity with the music that only time can bring...[Deller] brings vivid characterization to every one of these pieces... No better example of his extraordinary sensibility is to be found than in his singing of Fairest Isle, without a doubt the loveliest performance of this song that I have ever heard....a fine and memorable recital by a great artist." Passion des Cuivres

The wind quintet Passion de Cuivres was formed in 2003 and has already been praised by Nikolaus Harnoncourt for its authentic use of period instruments in reviving this 200-year-old tradition of performing chamber music written for brass ensembles. In general, the music-making of Passion des Cuivres is marked by lighter timbres than those produced by modern instruments. The sound spectrum of the present CD is further extended by the soprano Constanze Backes and by the bells of St Andrew's Church, Sonning near Reading, which have been cast over a period of three centuries, their sounds guaranteeing an atmospheric beginning and end to this musical journey. In addition to traditional carols by William Sandys (1792-1874), Lewis Henry Redner (1830-1908) and Lowell Mason (1792-1872), justice is done to the high standards of amateur groups in the 19th century by including arrangements of Baroque and Romantic choral numbers by composers as diverse as Purcell, Handel and Mendelssohn. In addition to cornets, horns and trombones, the listener will even hear an ophicleide, a kind of bass horn that was a forerunner of the euphonium. These spirited and frequently refreshingly witty arrangements of popular and - at least outside the UK - less well-known pieces of music are designed, therefore, to warm the cockles of hearts depressed by the thought of Christmas.

Paragon Saxophone Quartet

A tantalising fusion of ancient and modern, ‘Byrdland’ explores the world of the Renaissance song accompanied by a modern-day saxophone quartet. All the songs on the disc were written by the great composers working in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. Recent recordings by artists as diverse as Sting and Brian Asawa have partnered the singer with the more traditional lute.

Emma Kirkby's pure white tone is a joy throughout, her diction immaculate and her technique equal to all the demands of Purcell's many notes to a word... with nice decorations in repeated passages." - Gramophone
