In 2013 it is exactly one hundred years ago that the English genius Benjamin Britten was born. Britten’s brilliant manner of writing for string orchestra, his unique treatment of text, and his rich repertory of musical colours are all abundantly clear from the masterpieces featured on this recording. Besides the excellent soprano Barbara Hannigan, who sparkles in ‘Les Illuminations’, tenor James Gilchrist and hornist Jasper de Waal deliver an impressive contribution to this production with Amsterdam Sinfonietta. The orchestra herself indulges in all imaginable techniques, colours and dynamic extremes that Britten releases from his box of tricks for string orchestra. Amsterdam Sinfonietta is an ensemble of 22 gifted musicians from around the world. The group performs without conductor, under the direction of Candida Thompson, artistic director since 2003. The ensemble’s defining feature is the strong involvement and artistic drive of each individual member. The group has gained a reputation for its distinguished performances and innovative programming. Amsterdam Sinfonietta collaborates with renowned artists and performs in major venues around throughout the world. In the last seasons the group toured Europe, China, the US and Australia. “wonderfully alert readings by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta” Financial Times, 23rd February 2013 “Hannigan brings to the text the dramatic energy she has to burn in her championship of Ligeti and Boulez, while the conductorless orchestra and soloist (herself sometimes a conductor) sound a natural fit...[in the Serenade] both soloists play their parts quite straight...An enjoyable and carefully balanced CD” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013 “Gilchrist’s Serenade, with Jasper de Waal the stupendous horn soloist, is one of the best things the English tenor has done on disc — Pears-like in its intensity and crystalline diction. The Sinfonietta’s strings have a whale of a time as a band of wannabe Paganinis in the Aria Italiana of the Bridge Variations.” Sunday Times, 3rd March 2013 “Hannigan brings a fined-down intensity to the more hushed Rimbaud settings such as 'Being Beauteous', but elsewhere her tone tends to flutter under pressure...Gilchrist, by contrast, sounds at home in the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings...and while his slightly reedy timbre sounds very different to Peter Pears, he brings equally valid insights into this iconic cycle.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 *** “The strings were absolutely beautiful, transients and attacks were sharp, voices were natural, and the totality of the experience was musical and satisfying in every way...Frankly, I can’t imagine recorded music sounding much bette” Audiophile Audition, April 2013 “Candida Thompson’s Amsterdam Sinfonietta disc is pretty special – vibrant, incisive and colourful...Hannigan’s account of Les Illuminations is strong, her quickfire delivery in Parade a highlight...Gilchrist’s vibrato is strong but totally idiomatic, matched by Jasper der Waal’s bright-toned, very European horn sound.” The Arts Desk, 27th April 2013 |

| | | Britten: The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra & Simple Symphony
“the warmth and vitality of the playing has striking presence in this 1969 recording. The strings at the opening sweep one into the fun spirit of [the Simple Symphony] immediately...The performance [of the 'Guide'] is very fast...but the sheer adrenalin of the music-making is impossible to resist.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Britten: Les Illuminations
For this new recording of one of Britten’s most effective woks, soprano Karina Gauvin employs the full range of her expressive palette and great virtuosity. Her previous recordings have been well received; ”Her glinting soprano, bright-edged yet deliciously rounded and sensual…” The Times “Gauvin is a seductive interpreter of [Les Illuminations]. Her glinting sound gives a diamantine shimmer to the heroic passages, yet she never sacrifices the essential warmth and sensuousness of her voice. It's perfect for Britten's 'fire seen through ice' sound world which combines purity and passion in a particularly Gallic way.” International Record Review, March 2011 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Vladimir Jurowski conducts Britten
Recorded live at on 10 December 2006 at Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall (Double Concerto) and Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on 23 April 2008 (Variations and Les Illuminations). The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski has made a number of previous recordings on the London Philharmonic Orchestra label including Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14. His discography also includes the first ever recording of Kancheli’s Exile for ECM (1994) and a series of recordings with the Russian National Orchestra on PentaTone Classics. On this release Jurowski conducts live recordings of three of Benjamin Britten’s early works. Written just before his published Opus 1, the Double Concerto for Violin and Viola was never performed during Britten’s lifetime, but already demonstrates his mature style. The memorable way that the string orchestra depicts different characteristics of Britten’s composition teacher in the Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge led it to become Britten’s first popular classic. Les Illuminations sets Rimbaud’s poetry in vividly realised musical images, making it the crowning masterpiece of Britten’s early years. This is a rare recording of the Double Concerto. The piece was only premiered in 1997. This is Sally Matthews’ first recording solo with orchestra. Press acclaim from the concerts: ‘Pieter Schoeman and Alexander Zemtsov proved ideal advocates for this ambitious work [Britten’s Double Concerto for Violin and Viola]… Jurowski showed himself adept at mastering the Britten sound-world.’ The Daily Telegraph, December 2006 ‘Jurowski led a skilful performance of Bartok’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta.’ The Financial Times, April 2008 “The Double Concerto… is far more than an interesting curiosity. Strongly shaped, impassioned and poetic, with warm, clear recorded sound, this is about as good a version as one could hope for.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2009 ***** “Britten was an 18-year-old RCM student when he wrote his Double Concerto for violin and viola… Jurowski and his exemplary LPO principals extract every ounce of eloquence and sparky originality from Britten's youthful inspiration. In the Frank Bridge Variations... there are many stimulating touches - and the playing per se is wonderfully secure...” Gramophone Magazine, June 2009 “The LPO responds marvellously to Vladimir Jurowski, and the depth of tone and fluency in the Variations On a Theme of Frank Bridge are remarkable for a live recording, while soprano Sally Matthews produces lusciously seductive sounds in the Rimbaud settings of Les Illuminations.” The Guardian, 27th February 2009 *** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Britten - Simple Symphony
Festival Strings Lucerne, Achim Felder Since the foundation of the Festival Strings of Lucerne in 1956, the works of Benjamin Britten have been among the ensemble‘s core repertoire. | | | Britten - Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge
Jean-Paul Minali-Bella (arpegina) European Camerata, Laurent Quénelle The European Camerata was founded in 1995, to continue the work of the Youth Orchestra of the European Community, from which all members originate. It is conducted by violinist Laurent Quénelle, the orchestra plays standing up and this is only their second recording. Fuga Libera is delighted to welcome the European Camerata into its catalogue with four early works of Benjamin Britten. The Lachrimae, in the orchestral version first heard in 1976, is performed here on the arpegina, a large dissymmetrical viol, created by lutenist Bernard Sabatier for Jean-Paul Minali-Bella. “To find a continental ensemble concentrating on Britten is something of a novelty, but this disc of string music contains performances of superb sensitivity. The Frank Bridge variations and the Simple Symphony
are given the edge of spectacular brilliance they demand and a depth of feeling to boot. ..the sound is haunting.” Sunday Times | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. (Available now to download.) |
