The complete recording of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic opera ‘Iolanthe’, which been unavailable for the last two years and is now being released at mid price. Iolanthe is their ‘fairy opera’ of 1882, which opened at The Savoy Theatre and was the first production in a theatre with electricity anywhere in the world. It satirises many aspects of the British government and the laws of the era. 29 May 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Sir William Schwenck Gilbert – the librettist of one of the most famous musical partnerships in music history. Decca’s earliest recordings of G&S with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company were made between 1949 and 1955 in MONO.
