Smetana: Má Vlast

Smetana: Má Vlast

recorded live at the Barbican Centre on 10 and 15 May 2005

“...the LSO's unforced brilliance constantly[shone] forth …The players rose to the occasion with the virtuosity and commitment that are their hallmark. Under Davis' direction, Smetana's depiction of natural phenomena and rustic scenes sprang to life” Evening Standard, 11th May, 2005

“Sir Colin Davis's Dvorák is famous, his Smetana just as deeply felt; some of the speeds are on the broad side (especially in Vltava) yet there's a warmth and generous flexibility that works particularly well in the countryside, and the final slaughter in Sarka, or the torrents of the St Johns Rapids in Vltava, are despatched with real violence by the LSO.” Andrew McGregor, bbc.co.uk, 23rd January 2010

“an irresistible pageant of Czech patriotic fervour, a depiction of ancient battles and pastoral idylls, as well as a revelation of the work's symphonic integrity” The Guardian, 12th May 2005

“…a warm, incisive reading which brings out the drama as well as the poetry behind each portrait of Smetana's homeland, fully integrating the final two symphonic poems, 'Tábor' an 'Blaník', noisier than the rest and written rather as an afterthought.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2005

Ranging from idyllic to grandiose, the music is here performed by Claus Peter Flor and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, a team whose recording of the Asrael Symphony (BISSACD1776) by Smetana‘s compatriot Josef Suk made great impact on its release in 2009. Commending the sound quality (‘world-class’), the reviewer on the Classics Today website called it ‘one smoking hot performance’ by an orchestra playing ‘like a pack of demons’. The review in Classic FM Magazine included a ‘go buy recommendation’.

“the playing is both warmly expressive and beautifully detailed. The scene- setting opening work, Vysehrad...is spellbindingly performed...this non-Czech performance, by a classy cosmopolitan orchestra, holds its own with the best.” Classic FM Magazine, June 2011 ****
