When these recordings were made (in the 1960s), Schoenberg's music was comparatively rare on record. It represented, then, the typical daring of both, this ensemble, and of the L'Oiseau-Lyre label for which it was originally recorded. In the extended Schoenberg Serenade, the ensemble was joined for one of the movements by baritone John Carol Case. All recordings are released on CD for the first time. "(Berg) They are played with exactly the right poise and sensitivity..." Gramophone. “The performance [of the Serenade] here emerges superbly on this, its first appearance on CD. Indeed, it is nothing less than dazzling in its sharply vivid brilliance, and it does much to help one accept the argument. John Carol Case does wonders with the cruel vocal line.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Queyras's honeyed tone is breathtaking, while Tharaud's accompaniment is a model of delicacy and thoughtfulness. A ravishing recital.” The Independent on Sunday ***** “a masterstroke of programme planning” Gramophone Magazine “The aristocratic duo of Queyras and Tharaud give a subtle, serious performance, unusually wide in its range of expression and colour… enjoy the duo's wonderfully imaginative performances, whether in the eerie,
evanescent Webern miniatures or Berg's unique mix of yearning Romanticism and Expressionist violence.” The Telegraph BBC Music Magazine

| | | Cristo Barrios - 20th Century Clarinet
Cristo Barrios (clarinet) This disc is an exploration of abstract clarinet-and-piano music from the 20th Century. The six items on this programme include three sonatas, one sonatine, a set of pieces which taken together closely resemble a sonata, and another set inspired by the latter. All six might be considered to be rather off the beaten recital-programme path and all six convey something of their national origins. Certainly all have retained particular currency in their composers’ respective countries. “His tone is not just beautiful but finely graded over the widest dynamic and expressive range. Not only that, but his response to lyrical writing, ever sensitive, is matched by his natural feeling for jazzy Cuban rhythms...Though the clarinet is forwardly balanced in the recording, that allows one to appreciate the artistry of Cristo Barrios all the more clearly, well matched by his pianist, Clinton Cormany.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. | | | Berg - Complete Chamber Music
Pierre Woudenberg (clarinet), Bob Zimmerman (harmonium) & Sepp Grotenhuis (piano) Schoenberg Quartet This disc of Berg’s complete output for chamber music was originally issued by Chandos in 2001, as part of the Schoenberg Quartet’s traversal of all the chamber music written by the Second Viennese School. It included many rarities and arrangements – here, for instance, is the only currently available recording of Berg’s own transcription of the last of his early and passionate Altenberg-Lieder for a quartet of piano, harmonium, violin and cello, made for performance at an influential private musical society, established by Schoenberg in 1900 in order to play and promote the revolutionary music of himself, his friends and associates, away from the catcalls of the conservative Viennese public. This disc contains some of the most heartfelt and openly passionate music from a musical school often regarded as forbidding and abstract. “The Lyric Suite is among the crowning works of modern quartet literature, and the Schoenberg Quartet has the measure of its diverse moods and twin-track trajectory of increasing dynamism and emotional intensity.” Gramophone Magazine | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
